Egg Shell Shuffle 5k

Egg Shell Shuffle 5k complete!! (Warning: Lots of pics)!

This morning started out bright and early at about 6:40 am. The race didn’t start until 9:15 am, but I woke up early just so that I could drink a cup of coffee. I typically don’t drink coffee before races because I already use the bathroom enough as it is, but today I had my coffee.

We got to the race site at about 8:05 am, and the parking lot was already full, so we parked nearby on a side street. We met up with my dad, Sue, and Marlene shortly after we arrived.

Messing around:

My dad: The official bag holder, photographer, and baby sitter.

Thanks, Dad! You’re awesome!

The Easter bunny came out and said hello. He danced with Jaden, but don’t let Jaden’s face fool you – he was terrified.

The half marathon started at 8:30 am, and the 5k started at 9:15 am. Everything started on time which was nice, and I had time to go to the bathroom four times before the race. No joke – four times.

I was unsure what to wear since the weather was mild, around 40 degrees, but I knew that I would heat up quickly. There was also a little bit of a cold wind. I ended up wearing long shorts, Zensah calf sleeves, a short sleeve shirt, and a long sleeve dry fit shirt.

It seemed to work pretty well. I did get warm the last mile, so I just pushed up my sleeves.

I also got to wear my new Garmin 10 for the race! I got it as a Christmas present but haven’t been able to wear it yet because I haven’t run outside since last fall.

The first two miles went pretty good. I felt pretty good and had a good pace going. I’m slow and steady. After the first two miles things got harder – my calves started to get really tight. They haven’t been too bad on the treadmill, but with running outside and the hills and stuff, they didn’t want to cooperate. It was tough.

Three miles might not seem like a lot, but for me it is. Running is work for me. Hard work. The last mile, these thoughts started going through my head: I should have stayed at home in bed, Why the hell did I sign up to run a 15k in June, and Is it over yet, please let it be over.

I spotted Danny, and I knew that I must be close to the finish. I practically threw my iPod at him and took off. I can’t stand to wear my iPod a whole race, it starts to bug me.

I crossed the finish line and mine chip time was 31:48!! I was very very happy with that! My average 5k time used to be 36 minutes, so I am definitely improving. I placed #14 for my age group (30-34) out of 50 women, so I was also pleased with that.

After the race, I chatted with LosingLindy and her son. How awesome that they ran the 5k together! My kids just sat there and played their iPods the whole time. Great job, Lindy and V!

Danny, Marlene, and Sue are speedy!! Danny did awesome finishing in 25:09.

My stepmom did really good too (she’s another speedy one), and Marlene won second place for her age group!!

The prizes were Easter baskets and water bottles with gels instead of medals.

Great job guys!

The kids egg hunt started at 11:15am, and the kids had fun picking up all the eggs. The Easter bunny was also there handing out eggs, which was nice.

The adult egg hunt was crazy!

A whole bunch of adults running after eggs is chaos. Every time I bent down to get an egg someone would swipe in out from underneath me or trample me. Jeesh. I did manage to get a few eggs though.

There were some good prizes for the egg hunt but all my eggs were filled with candy.

With 7,000 eggs and only a handful of prizes, your chances of winning were pretty slim.

I enjoyed the race overall. I think it was well set-up, there was a good amount of porta potties, a lot of volunteers, lots of post race food, and I love love love getting a finisher’s medal. It makes me feel accomplished :)

I didn’t think the egg hunt was all that great. First, it started two hours after the 5k. I know they have to do awards and stuff, but that makes for a long day. Also, the adult egg hunt was just way too crazy. I would run the Egg Shell Shuffle 5k again but probably wouldn’t bother to stay for the egg hunt.

After the race, I treated myself to an iced coffee.

Then, we stopped by my dad’s house to borrow some chairs for tomorrow, and he showed me some more of the eggs he made.

How awesome is this mermaid?!

Have a great day and a wonderful Easter tomorrow!!

Yeah, I’m Cool…

This morning for breakfast, I had a Van’s blueberry waffle with peanut butter and a clementine. I’ve said it before, but I love these Van’s waffles, and it’s funny because I’ve never eaten one without peanut butter. I wonder what they taste like with syrup.

After breakfast, I worked on Jacob’s birthday party invitations because he’s got a birthday coming up soon!

Today’s Workout

  • 36 minutes treadmill
  • 25 minutes stationary bike
  • 10 minutes stretching

This morning I was so cool, I put on my Zensah calf sleeves and my brand-new Asic 2160s to run two miles on the treadmill.

I’m sure people at the gym looked at me and thought, oh my God, that poor girl. She thinks she looks like such a badass with those calves sleeves and fancy shoes, but really she looks like  dork who can’t even run one mile. Jeesh. Whatever.

36 minutes is the longest that I’ve been on the treadmill in a while. I started out with 5 minutes of walking and then alternated with 2 minutes of jogging and 2 minutes of walking for 26 minutes. I finished with 5 minutes of walking. And I’m not going to lie, it was tough. My calves hurt, my feet hurt, my heel hurt, my ankle hurt. It wasn’t unbearable pain, just uncomfortable. I think it’s just that my body isn’t used to running because I haven’t run in so long.

My right calf did feel slightly tight, but not as bad as it’s been before. I think the calf sleeves help. The real test is how my calves feel tomorrow. After the treadmill, I did an easy 25 minutes on the stationary bike.

I packed a mango Greek yogurt for after my workout. And I remembered a spoon this time.

Tonight is my second meeting for the weight-loss challenge. My “coach” emailed me on Tuesday and asked if we could meet before or after the meeting to discuss my meal plan for the week. I emailed her back right away and said that I could meet beforehand and asked what time I should be there. Well, I haven’t heard a thing back from her. I have no idea if I’m supposed to show up early tonight. Don’t email me asking me a question and then not even bother to respond. It’s stupid. If you can’t tell by now, this weight loss challenge is making me a little feisty.

Questions of the day:

  • Do you wear or do anything that you think is so cool, but really it’s not? I do – calves sleeves and 80′s sunglasses. I also pretend like I can dance, but I can’t. That doesn’t stop me though.
  • Did you workout today?

Zensah Sleeves

Look what came yesterday:

My Zensah leg sleeves! On the website, you can order the size you need by measuring your calf. If you are unable to measure your calf, you can order the size based on your height. Based on my height (5’8″), I would order a size S/M. However, I wanted to order an accurate size, so I measured my calf. According to my calf size, I had to order a size L/XL! Geesh, I have giant calves. If you think that you have big calves, they are nothing compared to mine.

I’ve kind of given up hating them, and have just learned to accept them. I try to think of them as muscular rather than “the world’s largest claves”. I’m glad that I measured my calves because the sleeves fit perfectly.

I wore them to BodyPump this morning because after the squat track my calves muscles feel like they want to burst out of my skin. I really didn’t expect them to make a huge difference, but after the squat track, I could hardly feel any calf tightness. These sleeves are awesome.  I can’t wait until I can run again and use them.

I was very fashionable this morning with my capris, calf sleeves, socks, and sandals. The black calf sleeves make my capris look gray and dingy. I swear that they were black on one time.

And believe it or not, I got even more fashionable:

I can hardly believe how stylish I am. It’s a gift.

This morning I started taking an iron supplement for my iron deficiency. Eating as a Path to Yoga mentioned that I should take it with Vitamin C. I googled it, and Vitamin C helps your body absorb the iron better, while things like tea actually prevent your body from absorbing iron. Good things to know. So, yesterday at Target, I picked up a bottle of Vitamin C.

After BodyPump, I had a Clif Builder bar that my step-mom dropped off for me last night. It was from her goody bag from the Shamrock 8k. She doesn’t like them, but I love them. She also gave me a peanut butter flavored Builder bar, but Danny swiped it. I guess that’s only fair since I swiped his Zone bar. Sharing is caring, but swiping is better.

And some of these might have found their way into my mouth. Except for the black ones, those found their way into the garbage.

I’m so glad that today is Friday, and the weekend is almost here. And that means back to school on Monday! Jacob has a friend over this afternoon, so that means four kids and one mom. Let the games begin. I hope that I survive.

Questions of the day:

  • What’s your favorite workout item or gear?
  • Do you have any plans for the weekend?

Best Friends

I finally bought a pair of calves sleeves. I always shied away from claves sleeves because I figured that they were for long distance, hard-core runners. But after all the problems that I have been having with my calves, I am willing to try anything. After reading Alyssa’s recommendation on the Zensah calves sleeves, I decided to go with those, only I bought mine on Amazon. The Zensah website was out of my size, but Amazon wasn’t. I ordered them in black. I love the hot pink ones, but I don’t want to call any more attention to my legs than necessary.

Amazon also had free shipping, and I had a $20 Amazon gift card, so I only ended up paying $14.95 for them.

I was able to get my lazy butt out of the house last night and go to yoga. I haven’t been in so long!

Do you see how light it is outside at 7:15 pm? Love it!

The instructor was asked me about the Spin class that I told her I would take, and I told her about my calves. She agreed that it’s best to wait until I hear back from the doctor. She also said that if any of the yoga poses bothered my legs, just do the downward dog position. But since my wrist still hurts, I couldn’t do that pose either. I just ended up doing some poses on my elbows rather than my hands to relieve the pressure on my wrist.

I finally opened up the Ben & Jerry’s frozen Greek yogurt. It was as delicious as I expected. I loved the graham cracker crumbs in it. I plan on trying the strawberry flavor next.

Today’s Workout

  • 33 minutes elliptical
  • 12 minutes stationary bike
  • 10 minutes stretching

My calves felt pretty good on the elliptical today, and I was going pretty hard. I actually even almost fell off a couple of times. Now, that’s talent. I finished up with an easy 12 minutes on the bike, to make my workout 45 minutes. I made sure to stretch my calves when I was done.

After my workout, I had a lemon Lara bar. I haven’t had a Lara bar in forever and forgot how good they are.

Lucky you! You don’t just get one self-pic of me in the car today, you get two!! And they’re both gross picture of me too, so that’s even luckier! Go buy a lotto ticket, it must be your lucky day.

I spent the rest of the afternoon hanging out with my BFF, Jenny. We have been best friends for about 18 years, and we might not always see each other or talk all the time, but we always pick up right where we left off, and are always there for each other. Isn’t that what being a best friend is all about?

Me and Jenny:

Questions of the day:

  • How long have you and your best friend been friends?
  • How often do you see each other?
