Good afternoon!

Today has been one of those busy busy busy days. I started the morning out with physical therapy. The PT said that it’s good that although my hip and glute still hurt, they’re not getting any worse from the activity I’m doing.

I’m still trying to take it easy for the most part – I’m just doing PT, BodyPump, and practicing the chest and back BodyPump tracks at home.

I count PT as a mini workout because it can be a little intense sometimes. Today I was there for an hour and a half. I started with ten minutes on the elliptical, followed by the Graston technique. Then I do stretches, bridges, one leg bridges, squats, step-ups, side step ups, and tube walking side to side.

For tube walking, I usually a tube like this:

The tube goes around my ankles and I walk side to side. Today, I was almost done with my 3rd set when the band snapped in half and went flying across the room. Oh, okay.

I felt kind of bad and awkward for breaking a band. Then a lady talking to the receptionist yelled out, “Wow, you’re strong!” I felt a little better.

After PT, I came home and practiced the chest BodyPump track for about 15 minutes before hoping in the shower (my chest and shoulders are sore!). By that time, I was starving so I made a quick salad for lunch. My salad pretty much consisted of anything I could find to throw in it – romaine, spinach, green pepper, red pepper, carrots, onions, cucumbers, croutons, fruit and nut mix, and almonds.

I had a cherry Greek yogurt for some protein and some pineapple.

I also bought a new salad dressing to try out.

Annie’s Naturals Goddess dressing. I am always trying to find a good dressing, and I really liked this one. Annie’s makes some really good dressings – I also like their poppyseed dressing.

After lunch, I went to a training meeting at the gym. It was only about an hour long and we just went over some important information regarding personal training. I also got a nice fat packet with information on every single piece of equipment in the gym to help familiarize myself with them.

The new gym opens this weekend, and I am so excited! Unfortunately, I am going to miss the official grand opening because it takes place the same weekend as my BodyPump certification training, but I think Danny is going to take the kids.

Chicken and fish tacos are on the menu for dinner tonight! Yum!

  • Any workout today?
  • Favorite salad dressing?

Happy Birthday!

Happy 2nd birthday to my adorable niece!

Auntie Heather loves you!

Yesterday, we spent the day celebrating my niece’s 2nd birthday! She had a Nemo birthday party, and Marlene made the cupcakes – how cute are these Nemo cupcakes?!

The Nemo cupcakes were banana flavored, but I went with one of the peanut butter filled chocolate cupcakes.

I made a bow-tie pasta Caesar salad for the party. It’s so good and easy to make. You just mix together green leaf lettuce (or romaine), about 2 cups of cooked bow tie pasta, slivered almonds, shredded asiago parmesan cheese, croutons, and Caesar dressing.

I didn’t add the croutons until we got to the party so they wouldn’t get soggy.

Jacob, Jaden, and I:

The kids had a lot of fun playing at the party and my niece loved opening all her presents.

Danny was in charge of holding the melted ice cream while I scooped it out. He almost got that spoon into his mouth without using his hands. Almost…but not quite.

Later in the evening, my family came over to our house for pizza and a bonfire.

I went to bed a little bit early last night because I knew I was running early this morning.

From today:

More on my run tomorrow! :) I’ll tell you this – it wasn’t my best run but ended well.

Have a great Sunday!

Lots of Food

Last night for dinner, I had Brussels sprouts with red onions and salmon belle mar.

I haven’t had Brussels sprouts in a while, so they were a nice change. And I love salmon belle mar. I buy it from Target and it’s salmon stuffed with a crab seafood filling. It’s so good.

Today’s Workout

  • 4.5 miles treadmill (6x 20 sec strides)

Today’s run was not the best. I blame it on the treadmill. I took more walk breaks than I can count. I still managed to complete 4.5 miles, and I did strides the last mile. I ran fast for 20 seconds with 45 seconds recovery at a jogging pace six times. By the time I was done, I was so sweaty it wouldn’t have made much difference if I had ran outside in the humidity.

I wore my Mizunos with the new SuperFeet inside. So far so good. They felt good while I was running.

I also wore my heart rate monitor and it picked up my heart rate for the first minute and then stopped. I’m not sure why it just quit finding my heart rate but it did, and I eventually just turned it off because it never picked my heart rate up again.

Also, during the first mile, I felt something sharp poking into my foot. I tried figuring out if it was the SuperFeet insoles but they’re not sharp. Finally, after the first mile, I took my shoe off and sure enough there was blood all over my sock.

I went into the bathroom to investigate and it looked like a piece of my nail came off and was slicing open the toe next to it. Great. I asked the front desk for a Band-Aid and cleaned my foot up. I got back on the treadmill and finished up the rest of my run.

Like I said, it wasn’t the best run today.

For lunch, I made a totally random salad.

My salad included: mixed baby lettuce, red onion, pears, blueberries, cranberries, almond slices, feta cheese, and poppy seed dressing.

I picked up a few items at the grocery store that I am excited about. First, I found this new Jif whipped peanut butter. I am a huge peanut butter fan and can’t wait to try this out.

It has 25% calories and fat than regular Jif peanut butter. It has 140 calories per two tablespoons. I think I’ll be making peanut butter French toast soon.

I also finally found Clif bar minis at the store!

I love regular Clif bars and Clif Builder bars but sometimes the full-size bar is too much for me. I’ve been looking everywhere for the Clif mini bars and finally found them at Meijer. Each bar has about 100 calories. I think these would be great before my long runs on the weekend.

Have a great afternoon!

  • What’s your favorite thing to eat for dinner?
  • Favorite salad dressing? I always have a hard time finding a dressing at the store. I like Ken’s Vidalia onion dressing and Annie’s poppy seed dressing.
  • Are they any new food items you want to try out?

Taking it Easy

Yesterday Last night for dinner I wanted to try out a new dressing that I bought – Bolthouse Farms salsa ranch yogurt dressing. So, I made a Southwest-type salad. My salad included baby romaine, cucumbers, orange peppers, carrots, almond slivers, and pickles. Not exactly Southwest but close enough. I topped it with the dressing, and it was delicious! Last Night’s Workout

  • Ab Workout – 15 minutes
  • Yoga – 60 minutes

After dinner last night, I went to the gym for yoga. We worked mostly on our abs, and I was hoping for more stretching for my calves, but it didn’t happen. I might try to go to the yoga stretch class tonight. Today’s Workout

  • Stationary bike – 40 miles, 7.15 miles
  • Stretching – 12 minutes

My calves feel a little bit better than yesterday but are still very tight and sore. Luckily, this week is low mileage week on my 15k training plan. Rather than risk hurting myself even more, I decided not to run today and just use the stationary bike. Hopefully, in a few days my calves will feel better enough to run, and I won’t be too far behind on the training plan. I know that if I push myself too hard I will wind up in even worse shape than I am now, and I won’t be able to run one mile, let alone nine miles. It’s not fun being injured and having calf problems. New Book I just got the new book for Julie’s book club – If I Stay by Gayle Forman. I usually buy books on my Kindle, but they start to add up fast! It’s so easy with the one-click buying to go a little crazy. The If I Stay paperback was only $4 with shipping from Amazon, so I decided to save a little bit of money and get it shipped. I am also going out of town next week, so it’ll be nice to bring the book with me without having to bring the Kindle and the charger. Have a great afternoon!

  • Suzanne from Mixing It Up is having a great Honest Fizz giveaway today! Go check it out!

  • Have you even been injured and had to take time off from working out?
  • Are you reading any books right now?
  • Where was the last place you went? I went to the grocery store.

Finding Good

I think it’s wonderful how the running community and others have continued to show their support for those in Boston. I came across this story on Facebook that I wanted to share:

Please help me by sharing this!
As some of you know, I was 1/2 mile from the finish line when the explosion went off. I had no idea what was going on until I finally stopped and asked someone. Knowing that my family was at the finish line …waiting for me, I started panicking, trying to call them. Diverted away from the finish line, I started walking down Mass Ave towards Symphony Hall still not knowing where my family was. Right before the intersection of Huntington, I was able to get in touch with Bryan and found out he was with my family and they were safe. I was just so happy to hear his voice that I sat down and started crying. Just couldn’t hold it back. At that moment, a couple walking by stopped. The woman took the space tent off her husband, who had finished the marathon, and wrapped it around me. She asked me if I was okay, if I knew where my family was. I reassured her I knew where they were and I would be ok. The man then asked me if I finished to which I nodded “no.” He then proceeded to take the medal off from around his neck and placed it around mine. He told me “you are a finisher in my eyes.” I was barely able to choke out a “thank you” between my tears.
Odds are I will never see this couple again, but I’m reaching out with the slim chance that I will be able to express to them just what this gesture meant to me. I was so in need of a familiar face at that point in time. This couple reassured me that even though such a terrible thing had happened, everything was going to be ok.
My hope is that the good outweighs the bad in the world.
I wore my race shirt to the gym yesterday.
Yesterday’s Workout:
  • Elliptical – 26.2 minutes
  • Butts and Guts Class – 60 minutes

Lunch yesterday afternoon was a big random salad.

My salad included: romaine lettuce, cucumbers, cranberries, pecans, pickles, pears, and feta cheese.

Dinner was really good too. I used the George Foreman grill to make salmon. I squeezed some lemon juice on it and sprinkled it with lemon pepper seasoning.

I also had some Alexia sweet potato fries and veggies with hummus.

After dinner, we went to Yogurtland.

Our anniversary was on Monday, and Danny and I both said that we weren’t going to buy each other presents. Yeah….that didn’t happen. But Danny went above and beyond what he should have and bought me the Keurig Vue coffee maker.

Every time I go to the store, I like to go drool over the Vue coffee maker, and I had no idea that Danny was actually going to get it! I was very surprised and happy. I love my coffee.

It takes different k-cups than the regular Keurig, so I am going to finish up all the k-cups that I have before I use it.

I got Danny a bottle of unaged Rye Jack Daniels. The men in my life love Jack Daniels and collecting different Jack Daniels things so Danny loved it. It’s cool because the Jack Daniels is clear rather than its normal brown color.

I also got him some protein bars, sports drinks, and a few lotto tickets. And he also got me an Amazon gift card because he knows that I love buying books for my Kindle.

Have a great day!

  • Do you have any stories of people doing good deeds to share? It could be in relation to anything. I just want to hear some good stories.
  • Do you exchange anniversary gifts with your significant other?
  • Any workout today?

Asthma Sucks

Last night at dinner I played an April Fool’s Day trick on the kids. I gave them their drinks but it was actually jello in a cup with a straw so they couldn’t drink it!

Hey, it’s funny to a six-year old…and I thought it was pretty clever. :)

The kids loved it.

For dinner, I made a similar salad to the one I had last week when I met Danny for lunch. My salad had spring mix, pears, walnuts, cranberries, cucumbers, and feta.

I topped it with Ken’s Sweet Vidalia Onion dressing. Marlene had this dressing when we celebrated my grandpa’s birthday a couple of weeks ago, and it was really good so I bought a bottle.

I also bought a package of cranberries and glazed walnuts which is what gave me the idea for the salad.

The glazed walnuts were the best part.

Today’s breakfast was something different from my usual Kashi Go Lean cereal. I usually stick to cereal in the mornings because it’s quick and easy during the busy morning, but sometimes it’s nice to have something different.

This morning I had a Van’s blueberry waffle topped with PB2 and blueberries. I also had two egg whites, coffee, and a glass of detox water.

Today’s Workout

  • Plank #31 – 3 minutes and 28 seconds!
  • 1 mile treadmill, walked
  • Butts and Guts – 60 minutes
  • Elliptical – 12 minutes
  • Stretching - 5 minutes

This morning, I had to make an asthma and allergy appointment for Jaden because his allergies have been acting up and he has been wheezy. Luckily, they were about to get him in at 11:15 am, so I told his school that I’d pick him up at 10:45 am.

I still had time to kill after Butts and Guts class (Jaden’s school is two minutes from the gym, so there’s no point in going home first) so I just did the elliptical for a short time, followed by some much-needed calf stretching.

Jaden’s doctor appointment took forever. Our appointment was at 11:15 am and by the time we even saw the doctor it was 12 pm. Then I was in a big rush to get Jaden back to school in time for lunch and pick up my niece.

Jaden left the doctor’s office with four prescriptions including a steroid, a breathing treatment, and an inhaler. I feel so bad that my poor little guys has to go through all this. He’s already on daily asthma and allergy medicine and gets allergy shots once every three weeks. Poor guy.

I’m finally home now and can eat lunch!

Have a great afternoon!

My blog will be down for few days sometime within the next week. I am in the process of switching over to a self-hosted site. Apparently, my love for taking pictures is making the process a little bit longer than originally planned :) But don’t worry, you can’t get rid of me that easily – once everything is switched over, things will be back to normal.

You can follow me on Facebook and Instagram (@RunEatPlay). I’m sure I’ll be posting a lot there!

  • What’s your quick go-to breakfast?
  • Do you (or your kids) have asthma or allergies?
  • Favorite salad topping?

More Pancakes, More Working Out, and More Salad

As promised, I had pumpkin pancakes again this morning. What can I say? They’re delicious. However, this morning I decided to change them up a bit and add peanut butter.

What’s better than pumpkin, peanut butter, and chocolate? Nothing.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t really taste the peanut butter all that much. I probably added too small of an amount, but I didn’t want the calorie count too high. So, I decided that next time, I’ll add the peanut butter to the top of the pancakes rather than mix in into the batter.

They were still delicious though.

Today’s Workout

  • 1.5 miles treadmill
  • BodyPump – 30 minutes

I had to leave BodyPump early this morning because I had a dentist appointment at 10 am. No cavities, thank you very much. And I got a new purple toothbrush. I lead an exciting life, I know.

After the dentist, I ran a few errands. I went to the store and got a birthday card for my grandparent’s 75th birthdays! Their party is tomorrow, so we will be in Wisconsin all day.

Then, I stopped at the doctor to pick up a prescription and to make flu shot appointments for the kids. Somehow I got suckered into making flu shot appointments for Danny and me too. Gah. I hate shots. Especially shots that make you feel like you’ve been punched in the arm. But I figured since the kids have to get them, I should set a good example and get one too. That’s dumb. I’m the mom. I should be able to do what I want.

After the doctor, I went to Mariano’s and made a salad for lunch. I have been on such a salad kick lately. That probably explains why I went to Saladworks two days in a row. But I wanted Danny to try it out because I liked it so much. He got a southwest type salad and he wasn’t all that impressed with it. Jeesh. I guess that’s not too surprising since he didn’t even know what a vegetable was before he met me.

Whatever. I still like Saladworks.

I topped my Mariano’s salad with veggies, crab, a few noodles, and some fruit.

I got some chocolate covered cranberries for dessert.

For the record, cranberries are better than raisins.

While, I was at Mariano’s, I decided to be a good mom and get Jacob his favorite meal for dinner – lasagna and sourdough bread.

Maybe you’re wondering why I didn’t get Jaden his favorite meal? It’s because Jaden hates all foods except chocolate chip pancakes.

The kids probably won’t eat the mashed potatoes or the potato pancake that came with the lasagna, but it was $6 for the lasagna itself or $6 for the lasagna with two sides. Hmmm…wonder what I should do?

And now I’ll probably be forced to eat that delicious yummy looking potato pancake because no one else will. The sacrifices us moms make.

I hope you are all having a wonderful Friday!

Questions of the day:

  • Do you get a flu shot?
  • When was the last time you went to the dentist?
  • Any plans this weekend?
  • Raisins or cranberries…or chocolate?

I Eat, I Workout, I Read

Yesterday’s Workout

  • Yoga-Lates – 60 minutes

Yoga-lates is not easy. Before I ever took yoga, I assumed that it was nice, easy, and relaxing. Not the case. The yoga-lates class that I take focuses a lot on the Pilates part, so we do a lot of ab work including tons of sits up and planks. I should have abs of steel any day now…

When I got home, Jaden wanted to show me his brand-new bike that Danny just finished building for him. Now, we just have to work on getting rid of the training wheels.

Breakfast was a bit boring this morning. I had Greek yogurt and a peach that I found hidden in my fridge. I always buy produce and then stick it in the drawers in the fridge and then forget it’s there. I guess I should either open those drawers more or put the food on the shelf where I can see it.

I love that this peach still has the little leaf attached. It’s the little things in life…

This morning was a little bit off schedule because Jaden had an appointment at the allergy doctor. We were there for almost an hour and half, and I was getting bored out of my mind. Luckily, I found a cookie recipe in Shape magazine to try out.

Today’s Workout

  • 3 miles treadmill (2:3 run/walk ratio)

After the allergy doctor, we went to the gym, and I did a quick 3 miles before the kid’s room closed and I had to pick up the kids. I did more of an interval workout today – I ran faster than my normal pace for two minutes and then recovered with 3 minutes of walking for three miles. I was nice and sweaty by the time I was done.

I stopped by the grocery store to pick up some strawberries for my salad, but they all looked nasty. Why is finding good strawberries so hard? Maybe I’m picky, but I hate the bruised, yucky looking strawberries. I found some nice, fat grapes and bought those for my salad instead.

In today’s salad was:

  • spinach
  • grapes
  • blueberries
  • honey roasted almond slivers (not as good as the pecans)
  • poppy seed dressing

Tonight is my final weigh-in. I can’t believe that 10 weeks went by so fast. I have a good feeling about this week. Hopefully everything goes good. Besides being weighed, I’ll also get my measurements taken so I can see how many inches I’ve lost. I never take my measurements myself at home, but one of the girls in the class said that she takes her on a weekly basis.

In other happenings…I just started reading Drop Dead Healthy by A.J. Jacobs for Julie’s book club. Even though I’m only a few chapters in, I would recommend this book. It’s well-written and funny. Watch for my review coming soon.

Questions of the day:

  • Is your fridge organized?
  • Are you picky about picking out produce?
  • Are you reading any books right now?
  • How old were you or you child when rode without training wheels?

I Like to Dance While Pretending to be on the Phone

When you’re driving in the car and Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe comes on the radio, do you turn up the volume all the way and dance in the car, complete with pretending that your hand is a phone…or is that just me?

Today’s Workout

  • 3 miles run/walk (4:30/1:30 ratio) on treadmill
  • 1.15 mile walk on treadmill

Total: 4.15 miles

For my birthday, Danny got me a Nike+ shoe pouch so that I can use my Nike+ sensor with my Asic shoes.

I’m not really a long distance runner, so the Nike+ works for me. You just put the sensor on your shoes, and it tracks your mileage on your iPod. I don’t think it’s 100% accurate, but it’s close enough. For long distance runners, I’ve heard those Garmins are pretty nifty.

My calves really hurt after my run today. A lot more then they have been lately, so I’ve been wearing my calf sleeves around the house this afternoon.

I’m running a Memorial Day Weekend 5k with my family on Saturday morning, so I think I’ll take the day off BodyPump tomorrow so my legs will be ready for the race. Hopefully.

There is no BodyPump class on Monday because of the holiday, so my gym is offering a BodyPump class on Sunday that I’m thinking about taking. Okay, who are we kidding? In reality, I’ll probably sleep in Sunday morning until the kids come in the bed and jump on my head, and then I’ll demand that somebody go get me coffee. Or I’ll go to BodyPump…You never know.

For my post-workout snack, I pulled out every single bar that I had stuffed in the cabinet.

I ended up eating the Herbalife vanilla almond bar, mostly because it was the one with the lowest calories. I got this one from my weight loss challenge class, and it was okay. The flavor was good, but I didn’t like the texture. It was chewy, almost like taffy, and almonds shouldn’t be chewy.

I can’t wait to try this Kind mango macadamia bar. It sounds so yummy!

After the gym, Jaden and I walked around the lake so that he could chase the ducks. Jaden loves chasing birds, ducks, and butterflies. He wants to catch one and keep it.

I had the same thing for lunch today that I did yesterday – a spinach and strawberry salad.  Is that really a surprise? Except I realized that yesterday, I underestimated the amount of spinach in two cups. It’s way more than I thought. So, my salad today had lots more spinach.

I also plan on eating this That’s It bar. Clever name, huh? It’s one apple and one pear in a fruit bar. That’s it.

Questions of the day:

  • How do keep track of the miles that you run?
  • Do you sing and dance in the car? I do. I might not be good, but I still do it.
  • What’s your favorite salad?

Thanks for Nothing, DMV

Yesterday afternoon, we headed out to the DMV to renew my driver’s license. I checked what time they closed, and we made sure to leave in plenty of time to get there. When we pulled into the parking lot, I saw this sign:

<Insert swear word here> You’ve got to be kidding me?! I checked the times, but I didn’t bother to check the days they were open. So, now we’ll have to go on Saturday anyway.

We had my niece with us, and we were going to drop her off at home because my brother and sister-in-law live out towards the DMV, but they weren’t home yet. My mom, who lives in the same area, wasn’t home yet either. So, we did the next best thing. We took the baby to the library and put her on top of the world.

We spent some time at the library, letting the kids play, and looking at recipe books.

Then we headed to my mom’s house, where I was starving and ate my body weight in tortilla chips. Damn. This has been a bad eating week for me. My brother and sister-in-law got home, and we decided to go to Noodles and Company for dinner.

I opted for the Med salad since I ate so many tortilla chips. I also gave Danny a lot of that feta cheese on top of the salad.

I actually was really surprised that I ordered a salad at Noodles and Company because I love their pasta dishes. But I ate so many tortilla chips and didn’t want to have a heavy dinner. I know that I ate a lot over the weekend, and I am really nervous that I am going to gain weight at my weigh-in on Thursday. Blah.

Also yesterday, I received the bondiband that I won from Ali at Running With Spatulas. I love that it says I love Zumba. I think I’ll wear it to BodyPump.

Do I look crazed in that picture or what?!

Today’s Workout

  • Butts and Guts Class

This morning, I went to the Butts and Guts class at my gym. I love that this class is different every week. The instructor always comes up with different stuff to keep the class interesting. Today we used a step to really work our glutes.

After my workout, I came home and made a snack. Apples with a little bit of lemon juice and cinnamon, with cottage cheese on the side.

The weather is beautiful outside today, so I think after lunch, I am going to take the kids to the park. I am also going to try to get a short run in tonight when Danny gets home. And poor Lawrence the caterpillar died during a really bad rain storm even though I made sure to bring him inside, so I have to work on finding a new caterpillar.

Questions  of the day:

  • Have you ever tried Zumba? I still haven’t, but I would love to try a class even though I’m not very coordinated.
  • What’s the best thing that you have ever won?
  • If you could be doing anything right now, what would it be?
