Current 5k Playlist

Good afternoon!

Can you believe that today is the last day of September?! I can’t believe how fast the year is flying by! I think that October 1st might be one of my favorite days of the year. To me, it’s the day that kicks off the holiday season.

It’s October, which means that it’s the month of Halloween fun (my family does a lot of Halloween related activities), then Thanksgiving isn’t too far away, and finally it’s the Christmas season! I absolutely love this time of year.

Yesterday morning, we stopped for a quick last-minute breakfast at Panera. I had my heart set on a pumpkin bagel, but then I saw their new steel cut oatmeal with apple chips and toasted pecans and my dreams of a pumpkin bagel went out the window.

A little blurry but at least it tasted delicious :)

The oatmeal was definitely a good choice. But I will have that pumpkin bagel one day.

Today’s Workout

  • Stretching – 10 minutes
  • BodyPump – 60 minutes

I plan on running Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday (5k) of this week but my quad is killing me today. I am going to see how it is in the morning and then will decide if I should run or not. I don’t want to push it before the 5k but I also want to stay on my running schedule.  I guess my other option would be to run Wednesday and Thursday. We’ll see how my quad and hip feel.

After BodyPump, I had a caramel fudge thinkThin bar.

I like caramel but I don’t love it. The bar was good, but I still prefer the peanut butter flavor.

Lunch this afternoon was a bagel thin with egg whites and provolone cheese, carrots and hummus, and pineapple.

5k Playlist

I have been working on playlist for the 5k on Sunday. I am the kind of person that can run with or without music. It doesn’t really bother me to run without music but I do notice that I tend to run a bit faster when I am listening to music.

I hate wearing an armband though so I just use Danny’s old iPod shuffle and clip it to my waistband. Even then, I sometimes end up ripping it off and carrying it in my hand by the end of the race.

Here’s my playlist so far:

  • Lady Gaga – Applause
  • Scooter – Black Betty
  • Jay Z featuring Justin Timberlake – Holy Grail
  • Sam & The Womp – Bom Bom
  • Nero – Crush on You
  • Scooter – J’adore Hardcore
  • Lorde – Royals

The Royals song by Lorde is currently by favorite song. I love it. Sometimes I listen to it on repeat over and over…which means I’ll probably be sick of it soon, but as of now I love it.

A few of the songs are from the new BodyPump release, but they make good running songs. :)

Have a great afternoon!

  • Caramel, chocolate, or peanut butter?
  • Favorite holiday?
  • What is currently your favorite song?

Few Words Friday

I just spent forever typing up my blog post and somehow I accidently deleted the whole thing. I have never done that before. How annoying.

Okay how about some pics from my day instead?

I didn’t work out today because my right leg and left knee still hurt and I don’t want to overdo it and get injured.

Instead, I spent the day running errands with the kids.

I tried on a cute skirt, but didn’t buy it.

The kids and I went to Panera for lunch like we do most Fridays.

I had a Mediterranean sandwich and a Fuji apple salad with dressing on the side. I also had a fruit cup instead of chips or bread (I’m not a big fan of Panera’s apples.)

My new Mizuno Inspire 9 shoes came in at the running store I ordered them from, and Danny picked them up for me on his lunch break.

Sunday is my niece’s 2nd birthday, and tomorrow is her party, so I met up with my stepmom to buy some birthday presents.

I can’t believe that my niece is going to be two already!

Desserts are Delicious

Yesterday, we went to my grandparent’s house to celebrate the Fourth of July.

I couldn’t pass up buying these flag sunglasses.

We cooked out, and I ate lots of food – salmon, orzo, cucumber salad, panzanella salad, fruit.

And dessert.

Marlene made an awesome cake and a orange creamsicle dessert.

My chocolate peanut butter no bake pie came out really good, even though the Oreo crust was a tiny bit crumbly.

We had a great night, but didn’t stay late enough to see fireworks. We did see some on the way home and plan on going to see more tonight. The kids had to get up early for swimming this morning and Danny had to work.

Today’s Workout

  • BodyPump – 60 minutes

After swimming lessons this morning, I went to BodyPump. I took it easy on the squats because my right quad is still sore. Instead of putting the barbell on my shoulders, I held the bar in front of me on the ground as a “third leg” option. This made the squats somewhat easier since I didn’t have that extra weight on my shoulders.

After the gym, the kid and I ran a bunch of errands, and then we stopped at Panera for lunch. Hello, delicious Fuji apple salad.

The only thing the kids will eat at Panera is the bagels. That’s it. Jacob will only eat the chocolate chip bagel with butter, and Jaden will only eat the Asiago cheese bagel with plain cream cheese – sliced but not toasted :)

At least it makes ordering easy.

This evening we’re going to see the fireworks! Have a great weekend!

  • Did you have the day off today?
  • What was the best thing you ate yesterday?
  • Do you order the same thing at restaurants or try new things?

Birthday Lunch

Last night, we cooked on the grill again. Actually Danny grilled. I can cook fine but I can’t grill to save my life.

The grill is pretty much the best way to cook in the summer.

I didn’t make baked potatoes this time, but I did eat some potato faces. And don’t let that small amount of watermelon fool you – I probably ate 10x that amount. Sometimes I eat watermelon until my stomach hurts. It’s a problem really.

This kids and I woke up with bad cold yesterday morning, and today I feel even worse. I hope I  feel better by Saturday!! I usually wake up about 7 am because that’s just what my body is used to. I woke up at 8:20 am today, and I knew with having to get the kids ready and being sick that there was no way that I was making it to the gym.

I had planned on going to Butts and Guts class, but it just wasn’t happening today. If I feel any better later, I am going to try to run when Danny gets home from work.

Jaden had an allergy doctor appointment this morning. Usually when he gets a cold his lungs don’t feel like working, but today his lungs actually sounded clear.

The doctor just recommended adding Zyrtec into his usual medication routine. She also gave me a sample to Nasonex nasal spray for myself since I am so congested. I hope it works because my nose and head feel like they’re going to explode.

Today is my brother, Paul’s, 28th birthday!! He has the day off, so the kids and I meet him and my niece at Panera.

After lunch, we went to the park and let the kids play for a while.

After the park, we ran a few errands and now we’re finally home. I feel exhausted. I hate being sick, and I really hope that I can fit in a run or two before Saturday!

Have a great afternoon!

Weighing In

Yesterday’s Workout

  • Arc Trainer – 16 minutes (am)
  • Body Pump – 60 minutes (am)
  • Spin Class – 50 minutes (pm)

Yesterday was the first time that I have ever used an arc trainer.

It kind of reminded me of an elliptical, except for you kind of glide on it more. The two big differences that I noticed were that you couldn’t let go of the handles and you couldn’t go backwards. Sometimes on the elliptical I like to pump my arms rather than hold on to the handles, but when I tried to let go of the arc trainer handles, I almost fell off (I am also pretty uncoordinated).

Also, you can’t go backwards on the arc trainer. On the elliptical, I like to switch between going forwards and backwards because you use different muscles when you go backwards and your body doesn’t get used to the repetitive forward motion.

Overall, I think it’s good for an occasional workout, but I like the elliptical better. My calories burned were also similar to what they are on the elliptical.

Today’s Workout

  • 1.34 miles – pink treadmill (walked)
  • Butts and Guts Class – 60 minutes

This morning, I power-walked on the treadmill while reading Redbook magazine, and I came across this interesting scale.

Instead of showing you what you weigh, it only shows you how much weight you’ve lost or gained since the last time you were on the scale. I thought that was kind of interesting.

I know that everyone says that you shouldn’t focus on the number on the scale and that your weight fluctuates and your mood shouldn’t be dependent on what that number is – but I feel like I personally need to weigh myself often to stay on track.

I gained a lot of weight because I didn’t weigh myself for over a year. Weighing myself often helps me to see when those pesky pounds start creeping back on. I usually weigh myself at least three times a week. I try to avoid weighing myself on Mondays because the number is always higher because I usually indulge a bit on the weekends, but I’ll weigh myself Tuesday or Wednesday to make sure I’m back on track.

I think a scale that only shows you how much you’ve lost or gained is an interesting idea because sometimes I do get too focused on the number on the scale. I feel like I should weigh a certain number and get upset if I don’t. But I suppose on the other hand, if you saw that you had gained weight rather than lost (or stayed the same), you’d be just as upset. Maybe we should just do away with scales all together!!!

At the 5k on Saturday, they had Panera bagels with cream cheese. This is the first race that I’ve been to that actually gave out cream cheese with the bagels. They had the pink ribbon cranberry bagels that I have been dying to try, so I had one with blueberry cream cheese. It was so delicious. It was so good that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about that darn bagel.

So, today I decided to get a cranberry bagel from Panera for lunch. Except when I got there, I saw that they had pumpkin pie bagels! Since, I had already tasted the cranberry bagel, I went with the pumpkin pie bagel…with NY cheesecake cream cheese. Heaven.

Questions of the day:

  • Do you weigh yourself? How often?
  • Is your mood affected by the number on the scale?
  • What did you have for lunch today?

Dash and Splash 5k

The Dash and Splash 5k is complete.

Post race snack:

It wasn’t the best race for either Danny or me. I don’t even know what my official time was - it was 36 and some seconds. My excuse this time is that my legs were sore from boot camp yesterday. I always have an excuse as to why I’m such a slow runner.

Danny’s time was 24:54, which I thought was awesome, but he wasn’t happy with.

I have pretty much accepted the fact that I am a slow runner, but lately I have been wondering why I’m such a slow runner. I’ve been running for three years, since my first Muddy Buddy in 2009. Not serious running, but more for a hobby, exercise, and fun.

You would think after running for more than three years that my time would improve, but no, mine hasn’t. I have tight calves which making running difficult, but not impossible. I’ve done long runs, short runs, fun runs, speed work, and whatever else, but I never improve and I can’t figure out why. Maybe I don’t push myself hard enough? I feel like I do. Maybe I need someone to teach me how to run? I just honestly think my body wasn’t made for running.

On to better things…like food.

Last night, we went to Panera for dinner. I had the Mediterranean veggie sandwich and the classic salad. Every time I order the classic salad, I forget that I hate it. It tastes like grass. I used some poppy-seed dressing, and managed to eat it, but I have to remember to stop ordering it. But the Mediterranean veggie sandwich is my favorite sandwich ever.

Also speaking of food, I made the Funfetti dip my niece’s birthday party today, except I used the actual Funfetti cake mix instead of the confetti cake mix and it came out 10x better. Maybe 100x.

I also used plain yogurt instead of vanilla. This dip is awesome. I definitely recommend making it with the Funfetti rather than the confetti cake mix.

We’re off to my niece’s first birthday party! Have a great day!!

Back to the Routine Monday

Happy Memorial Day!

Last night, my family came over again for another cookout. This time I remembered the camera for the s’mores.

I bought the giant campfire marshmallows, not realizing that you’re supposed to use a full graham cracker for these babies. We were all a giant sticky mess after eating our s’mores and had to take turns scrubbing ourselves off in the sink. I am so talented, I even managed to get marshmallows all over my legs. But it was a fun night!

Since it’s Memorial Day, Danny and the kids are home today. I wanted to stick to my normal schedule as much as possible because I tend to overeat a lot during the weekend, and I didn’t want that to carry on into Monday also. I am trying hard to stick to healthy eating during the weekends, but it’s so hard. We’re usually busy during the weekends; running around, doing errands, seeing family, eating out. I prefer the weekdays when I’m at home and have a normal routine. It’s something I continue to work on.

This morning, I woke up at 7 am. Not by choice, but because my body is used to waking up at that time (although, I did sleep in until 10 am the morning before!). Since everybody else was still sleeping, I decided to head to the gym. I wasn’t very hungry, so I just had a mini Luna bar before I left.

When I first pulled into the gym parking lot, I wasn’t even sure if they were open because hardly anyone was there. There wasn’t any fitness classes, kid’s room, or open gym today, but the fitness center was still open.

  • 5 miles treadmill (ran 1/4 mile very fast and walked 1/4 mile)
  • 12 minutes stretching

I planned on only running three miles this morning, but I was watching the pilot episode of Supernatural on my iPod, and I felt good, so I just kept going. I ran a quarter of a mile at a fast-for-me pace, and then walked a quarter of a mile for a total of five miles. Sometimes when I’m caught up in a show, I can just keep going. Unfortunately, my current gym doesn’t have tvs built into the treadmills like my old gym did, so I just watch on my iPod.

It felt so nice to stretch afterwards. I haven’t spent a good amount of time stretching lately.

Blurry, sweaty, and crazy hair:

After working out, I came home, showered, and then we headed out to do some grocery shopping. I found this Panera poppy seed dressing at Target that I’m excited to try on my spinach and strawberry salads.

I currently use the Annie’s poppy seed dressing, which I like but it has 70 calories for two tablespoons. The Panera poppy seed only has 15 calories for two tablespoons. Hopefully it’s as good as the Annie’s.

As soon as we got home, I dove into the cherries that I bought.

I love summer fruit so much, and I can’t wait until peaches and pluots are in season.

We’re going to spend the rest of the day relaxing, and I am going to see if I can get Danny to take me to see Men in Black 3. I thought that the first two movies were fun, and want to see the new one!

Questions of the day:

  • Do you eat more on the weekends? Do you eat not as healthy on the weekends?
  • Do you watch tv while working out?
  • What’s your favorite summer fruit?
  • What’s the last movie you saw?

I Want to Ride on a Fire Truck

Happy Friday! Is it just me or did this week go by so slow?

I knew that I wouldn’t be able to workout this morning, so I went to BodyPump after dinner last night. I wasn’t able to go to BodyPump Wednesday because of my mole removal, so going last night worked out, and meant I was still able fit BodyPump in twice this week.

Speaking of my mole removal, the doctor’s office called this morning and said that my mole was fine, and nothing to worry about. I’m very happy, of course, but the five stitches in my back aren’t.

I wasn’t able to go to the gym this morning because I went on a field trip to the Fire Department with Jaden’s school. Jacob didn’t have school today, so he was able to go on the field trip too.

Do you love Jaden’s face in that picture?

The fireman put all his gear on and let the kids touch and feel it. They crowded around him and were knocking on his helmet and pushing the buttons on his equipment. He was brave. And not just because he’s a fireman but because he willing knelt down into a group of pouncing preschoolers.

The kids had a fun time climbing on the firetrucks and ambulances and seeing where the fireman eat and sleep.

What’s up with Jaden and weird faces today? He looks crazy in that picture too.

I packed a few snacks in a cooler to eat after the fire department. I had a key lime Greek yogurt. I took Julie’s advice and crumbled two Scooby Snack graham crackers on top for a little key lime pie effect. It was delicious. Julie didn’t use actual Scooby Snacks, but I did because I have kids.

The kids and I went to Target to pick up a couple of things (Van’s blueberry waffles!), and then we met my brother and my niece at Panera for lunch.

My brother had the broccoli and cheddar soup, which was perfect for a rainy day like today. Then I was kind of jealous that I didn’t order soup, but I did steal a few bites of Jacob’s.

I had my Panera usual – Caesar salad and a Mediterranean veggie sandwich.

Baby McCutie Hungry Face was starving and ate a lot.

Now, we’re back at home. Sometime this afternoon, I plan on doing day #2 of the March Abs Calendar. Oh, and my family has officially decided to run the Dine and Dash 5K in April. To run the race, you have to be in teams of four. There are eight of us doing it, so it works out perfect with two teams. This should be a very interesting race. I can’t wait.

Plans for the weekend? None! It’s nice not to have any set plans for the weekend. I do want to go to yoga if I wake up early enough tomorrow. The Walk 2 Run program that starts soon is at the same time as yoga, so I won’t be able to go the Saturday morning yoga for a while.

Questions of the day:

  • What are your plans for the weekend?
  • Are you going to cook tonight or go out and get some food?! We always seem to go out to eat on Friday nights.
  • Have you tried the Starbucks hot chocolate that they sell at the grocery store? I just asked Danny to pick me some up on his way home.

What Yoga has Taught Me

I was going to title this post, I want to throw my damn computer out the window, but that didn’t sound very cheerful. My computer is slower than molasses, and I can’t wait to get a new one. What should take me 5 minutes to do, takes an hour. Grrr…

Not that’s out of the way…moving on.

This morning for breakfast, I made an egg white omelet with red onion, broccoli, and feta. I usually use spinach, but we were out, so I used broccoli instead. I also had a piece of toast with peanut butter and strawberries.

The strawberries looked surprisingly good at the store yesterday, so I picked some up. I am so picky about strawberries. I usually examine the containers for 20 minutes before making a choice. It’s a problem, I know.

Today’s Workout

  • 20 minutes treadmill (walking/jogging)
  • 15 minutes elliptical
  • 10 minutes stationary bike

Jaden has sports class on Thursdays at the park district where I work out. We usually get there a little earlier since we go right from dropping Jacob off at school. So, of course we had time to take a few self-pic car pictures.

After sports class and the gym, I had a few errands to do. I forgot to bring a post-workout snack, and Jaden and I were starving, so we stopped at Panera. I had the Mediterranean egg white sandwich.

Jaden opted for a plain bagel with plain cream cheese. He must get his adventurous eating from me.

One of our stops was the party store to order balloons. Someone’s got a birthday coming up!

Last Night

I also wanted to add that I went to yoga last night. There are a few things that I have learned from going to yoga:

  • I am a lot taller than other people. Sometimes when I look in the mirrors, I look like a giant.
  • My arms are abnormally long. It’s weird.
  • I can’t balance for sh!t.

Questions of the day:

  • How tall are you?
  • What was your workout today?

I’ll Just Take the Coffee

Look what Danny brought home from work yesterday:

Jeesh, doesn’t he know that I have a donut addiction?! Luckily, I stayed strong and didn’t eat one. The fact that they sat out all day long kind of helped sway my decision. They sure smelled good though…

For dinner, I made salmon with roasted red potatoes, green beans, carrots, and cottage cheese with peaches.

I buy the white wine preseasoned salmon at the store. It’s only $1 more than the plain salmon, and it saves me the time of having to season it myself. And to me that’s worth paying the extra $1, because I am also making burgers for everyone else, cooking side dishes, and watching the kids.

After dinner I headed out to the nighttime BodyPump class. I wasn’t able to go to yoga on Wednesday, so I wanted to get another class in for the Commit to be Fit Challenge.

Danny is so sweet. Look what he brought me home this morning:

Kleenex and coffee. He’s so romantic. He asked me what was better: Kleenex and coffee or Kleenex and chocolate.

Kleenex and coffee. Duh. This man really know that way to my heart.

  • 10 minutes hoola hooping
  • 23 minutes treadmill (walking/jogging)
  • 7 minutes stepper machine (after 7 minutes I still couldn’t figure out how to work this  machine)

I started my workout with 10 minutes of hoola hooping at home. Then I headed to the gym for a quick and easy workout. My body is pretty tired from doing BodyPump three times this week, so I just did a quick cardio workout. I used the stepper machine for the first time, and I couldn’t really figure it out – it felt awkward. I like the Stairmaster better, but my new gym doesn’t have one.

That’s the way I hoop:

On the way to the gym, I heard a radio commercial for Panera’s Mediterranean Egg White sandwich. I’m such a sucker for advertising. You know the car commercial with the dancing hamsters? Well, I don’t even know what kind of car it is, but I’d buy it just because those dancing hamster are so funny.

I guess it’s no surprise that I went to Panera after the gym. My Panera card had a free smoothie or frappe drink on it. I asked if I could just get regular coffee instead because those frozen drinks are like 500 calories. The lady was like but the frappes are $4 and the coffee’s only $1.89. Are you sure you want to do that? You’re losing money. How about a coffee and we’ll add a pastry to make up the difference.

I just wanted my breakfast sandwich and free coffee. So finally, I settled on a chocolate chip muffie for Jaden. Then she’s like oh, take two muffies to make up the price difference. I know she was trying to help me out, but I was already tempted with donuts yesterday. I didn’t want to be tempted with muffies too.

Finally, $4.62 later, I took my breakfast sandwich, hazelnut coffee, and two muffies and ran out of there.

Jaden ate one muffie. Isn’t it funny that they’re called muffies? Why not muffin tops?

Question of the day:

What’s your favorite pastry?

Do you like regular coffee or fancy frappe coffee? Or if you hate coffee, do you like tea? Soda pop? Jack?

The Book Page was updated today!
