Pyramid Upper Body Workout

Good afternoon! Thanks to everyone for all the positive comments on yesterday’s post. I can’t wait to fully heal so that I can get back to running (and BodyPump!). Friday is my next session with the physical therapist. I’ll go twice a week for the next few weeks.

I might not be able to do too much exercise but I did a great upper body workout today. I did an upper body pyramid workout that I found here (I did change up some of the weight and reps slightly).

If you’re not familiar with a pyramid workout, it is a system which involves increasing (or decreasing) weight with each set. In the first set, you use a light weight with a high amount of repetitions. As you progress, you add more weight and lower your number of reps.

With your weight choice, your last rep you be hard to complete but not impossible. If you’re fatigued by the end of the set( (but still able to maintain proper form), then the amount of weight you’re using is usually good. It can take time to figure out the correct weights.

These are the exercises and reps that I did, and like I said I’m still figuring out the weight. For a few of these exercises, I probably could have gone a little bit heavier, which I will try for next time.

  • Set 2: 10 reps 16 lbs
  • Set 3: 8 reps 18 lbs

After completing the pyramid upper body workout, I did the following ab circuit repeating it twice.

  • 50 ball sit-ups
  • 30 second plank
  • 30 second side plank (each side)
  • 25 Russian twists with 6 lb medicine ball
  • 25 reverse crunches
  • Pilates 100
  • 25 bridges

Later in the morning, I took the kids to see Smurf 2. It just came out today and Jaden has been dying to see it.

I have been eating really good these past few days and didn’t want to ruin it with movie theater popcorn (my favorite). So, I brought my own snack to the movies.

I brought a Perfectly Simple oatmeal chocolate chip bar (the best flavor) and a bag of grapes.

I made lunch when we got home from the movies, and I pretty much had the same thing as I did yesterday, except this time I used my grill pan to grill the veggie for the wrap.

I added hummus, spinach, red onion, green pepper, red pepper, and sun dried tomatoes. I definitely think it’s better grilled!

I have been trying hard to get used to no running and no exercise classes, but it’s been hard. At least I have found some exercises that I am able to do!

Have a great afternoon!

The Weekend and A New Heart Rate Monitor

Happy July!

I can’t believe it’s July 1st already and the year is half over!

The Weekend

Here’s a few picture from over the weekend.

On Saturday night, we went with my family to the drive-in movie theater.

We saw Monsters University (yes, again) and Man of Steel. I fell asleep about a quarter through the Man of Steel movie. I was kind of bummed because I wanted to see it, but it didn’t start until after 11 pm, and I guess that was just too late for me.

On an impulse, I bought these delicious Chips Ahoy Reese’s cookies at the store to share with everyone at the movies. I really have to work on eating better on the weekends…but they were so good.

Twice over the weekend, I went to Starbucks to get their new shaken peach iced green tea lemonade. I think it’s one of my new favorite Starbucks drinks. I’m not a huge fan of Starbucks coffee. I prefer regular McDonald’s or Dunkin Donuts coffee. But I like Starbucks tea and the new peach tea lemonade was delicious.

On Sunday, Jaden had an end of the season party for t-ball.

It was at a park and all the parents brought food to share. One of the moms made these adorable hamburger cookies.

Aren’t they so cute?! She used vanilla wafers, Thin Mint (or Grasshopper cookies), frosting, coconut, and sesame seeds.

Heart Rate Monitor

I went to Sports Authority over the weekend to get a heart rate monitor. I researched them online and knew that I wanted a basic one that was less than $100. I planned on getting the Polar FT4 (which comes in pink) but when I went to the store, I ended up leaving with the Polar FT7.

I always do this – I research a product online to buy, go to the store, and then leave with a different product. Oh well. The Polar FT4 was $89.99 at Sports Authority. I know they’re cheaper on Amazon, but I’m impatient and don’t want to wait for shipping.

I ended up buying the Polar FT7 which was about $20 more – $109.99. It didn’t come in pink, so I got it in black. The two watches are pretty similar but the FT7 tells you if the main effect of your training is fitness improvement or fat burning, so you can adjust your workout as needed.

It was easy to set-up. I just entered the time, date, my age, height, and weight. It comes with a chest strap that I got to work the first try and it was surprisingly comfortable. It has visual and auditable alarms so you know when you’re in your target heart rate zone.

You target heart rate can be found by subtracting your age from 220, and multiplying it by the heart rate zone you want to train in.

Heart rate zone 1: 65-75 %

Heart rate zone 2: 76-85%

Heart rate zone 3: 86-95%

So, for example, I am 31 and want to workout in zone 2:

(220-31) x .76 = 143

(220-31) x .85 = 160

So, I want my heart rate to be between 143 and 160 beats per minute for training zone 2.

Today’s Workout

  • BodyPump – 60 minutes

I wore my heart rate monitor to BodyPump this morning. My heart rate didn’t get very high because it’s strength training rather than cardio. I noticed that it did get higher during some tracks like the squats and back.

I think my average heart rate was only about 96 bpm. I’ll see what it is tomorrow at the cardio class I take.

For lunch, I made a stuffed pepper with brown rice, spinach sautéed with a little olive oil and garlic, and feta cheese.

Have a great afternoon!

Childhood Movies

Today’s Workout

  • BodyPump – 60 minutes
  • 2.1 miles, treadmill

I woke up this morning feeling a lot better than yesterday. I am still slightly congesting but getting better!

I want to try and squeeze in a 2 mile and a 3 mile run before Saturday, and I knew it wasn’t going to happen unless I ran on the treadmill. So after BodyPump this morning, I hopped on the treadmill and ran 2 miles.

It’s so weird to run on the treadmill again. I used to only run on the treadmill, but since switching to running outside, it makes it a lot harder to run on a treadmill. I was super sweaty after only running two miles.

I hope to run three miles outside tomorrow morning before Danny goes to work. We’re supposed to get bad storms later this afternoon, so I’ll see how the weather is in the morning.

Post workout, I had a mini chocolate mint Builder Bar.

After the gym, we went to pick up my niece and of course I have to share a picture of how cute she is.

My aunt sent her that outfit in the mail and it arrived while were there so I had to put in on her :) After having two boys, it’s fun to be able to dress up my niece.

Lunch this afternoon was two egg whites, toast with peanut butter, and apple slices.

I haven’t had peanut butter toast in forever so it was especially good.

I ate while reading two of my new running magazines.

So, is it embarrassing that I already bought our tickets to see Monsters University next Friday?!

I don’t even know if the kids want to see it, but I do :) Jacob was little when the original Monsters Inc. first came out, and it was one of the first movies that he loved watching. He used to watch it over and over and over.

I think we all have one of those movies that we watched a million times when we were younger and never got sick of it. For me, it was Ladybugs with Jonathan Brandis.

For my brother, it was 3 Ninjas.

I can’t even tell you how many times I have seen both of those movies.

I feel like Monster Inc. was part of Jacob’s childhood, so I am excited to see Monsters University.

Have a great afternoon!

  • Is there a movie that you watched over and over as a kid?
  • Is there a movie that you love watching as an adult? There are some movies that I will always watch when they come on tv – A Walk to Remember, Dawn of the Dead, Resident Evil (for some reason I have an obsession with zombie movies)
  • What did you have for lunch today?

Sunday Randomness

Good morning! I am up bright and early this Sunday morning. Why my body wants to wake up at 6:30 am on a Sunday, I’ll never know.

Thank goodness for coffee.

Friday Night

On Friday night, we went to my nephew’s high school graduation.

My stepbrother only had a limited number of tickets for his graduation which is why we attended my nephew’s graduation.

Saturday’s Workout

  • 5 miles outside – cooler and windy

I was still feeling a little disappointed with my 7 mile run the other day, so I woke up about 6:45 am Saturday morning to try and beat the heat. It was a much better run than Thursday.

I was a bit slow, but I was able to run the whole 5 miles without any walking breaks. I did stop about halfway through to refill my hand-held water bottle and use the bathroom, then I was right back on my way.

The hardest part of running was the wind. I was running against it for 2.5 miles and it was difficult. It seems like there’s always some kind of weather obstacle when running in Chicagoland – heat, wind, snow, rain.

When I stopped to fill up my water bottle, I added half a tab of Nuun to it. For some reason, Nuun makes my water bottle leak everywhere. I ran 2.5 miles without a problem, but after I added the Nuun, my water bottle leaked everywhere for the next 2.5 miles, and it was a pain.

At one point, I debating dropping the water bottle on the ground and driving back later to get it because it was making such a mess. I didn’t, but I might be looking for a new water bottle soon.

I finished 5 miles before 8 am and headed home to take a quick shower before Jaden’s t-ball game.

Watching kindergarteners play t-ball is quite amusing. Jaden will chase every single ball whether he supposed to or not.

Saturday afternoon, my mom came over to watch the kids so Danny and I could see a movie. We saw Now You See Me, and I really liked it. I didn’t see the end coming at all so I really enjoyed it.

A self-pic in the car:

After the movie, we stopped for a little frozen yogurt before getting home at about 8 pm. We’re party animals, aren’t we :)

This morning, we’re going over to my grandparent’s house. My grandpa had back surgery recently, so my family is helping him with a few things around the yard that need to be done.

I hope you all have a wonderful Sunday!

Running, The Ninja, and A Movie Night

Last Night’s Workout

  • 3.1 miles outside, warm & slightly windy

Today’s Workout

  • BodyPump – 60 minutes

Well, the meet-up for the Zooma half marathon ended up being postponed last night. I guess not enough people were able to make it out. I didn’t have to worry about driving and parking after all.

I decided to still run last night anyway. Jaden had t-ball in the evening, so Danny took the kids, and I waited for my sister-in-law to pick up my niece. After they left, I ran to t-ball. It’s exactly 3.1 miles from our house.

Once again, not a great run. I ran two miles and then had to take a walk break because my calves were killing me, which is my own fault for taking the cardio class that morning. I wanted to go farther but after 3.1 miles by legs were done. I am also starting to get a cold, so that didn’t help.

I wore my new Pro Compression socks. While I like them, I don’t love them. I think maybe it’s because I have been wearing the calf sleeves for years. They are a lot thinner than my normal socks so my foot slide around the whole time. Just one foot, which was weird. I think I’ll use them for recovery after my runs and continue to run in my sleeves.

Post run after t-ball:

I also wore my Spi belt that I got for Christmas for the first time.

I never run with my phone, and I didn’t want to leave it at home last night in case I call to Danny at t-ball for some reason. So, I used the SPIbelt. Normally, I don’t like running with things around my waist which is why I don’t run with a water belt, but the SPIbelt was awesome. I didn’t even know it was there and it didn’t bounce at all. For my three mile run, it was perfect.

I also ran with my hand-held water bottle which I filled up with citrus fruit Nuun.

The water bottle leaked the whole time. Not fun. So far, water has been my biggest challenge while running (not including my wonderful calves and quads).

My new Ninja blender is awesome…at slicing my thumb open. Those blades are sharp! I sliced my thumb open within 2 minutes of making my smoothie.

The Ninja has a tower of blades that goes into the pitcher. You have to put it in and take it out. I must have grabbed it wrong because I sliced my thumb right open. It wasn’t terrible, but it hurt and bled a lot. Thankfully, the blender worked awesome and my smoothie came out perfect.

I made a peach pineapple smoothie.

My smoothies includes strawberries 99% of the time. I just happened to be out of them this time.

Tonight, I’m going to one of those restaurant movie theaters where you can watch a movie and order dinner at the same time. I’m going with my step-mom, sister-in-law, and grandma. It should be a fun girl’s night. We’re seeing The Great Gatsby.

Have a great afternoon!

  • Do you run with your phone?
  • Do your smoothies always included a certain fruit or ingredient?
  • Have you ever been to a restaurant movie theater? This is my first time!
  • What’s the last movie you saw?

Going to the Movies

Good afternoon!

First up, the winner of the Alexia Foods Giveaway:

#43 – Alw6ys - Janice, please email your shipping address to runeatplay(at)hotmail(dot)com.

Yesterday afternoon, we took the kids to see Oz The Great and Powerful in 3D.

I thought it was really good, and the kids liked it, but there was a few parts where Jaden had to hide his eyes under my coat. I guess he didn’t like the giant creepy flying monkeys with sharp teeth coming right at him in 3D.

Sometimes I like 3D movies and sometimes I don’t. They can give me a headache and make my contacts dry sometimes, but Oz in 3D was good.

Side Note: My favorite thing to get at the movie theater is an Icee, but yesterday their Icee machine was broken and it kind of ruined my movie going experience. Then I got over it.

Today’s Workout

  • Plank #17 (yesterday): 3 minutes and 2 seconds <— I finally hit 3 minutes!
  • Plank #18 (today): 3 minutes and 3 seconds
  • Elliptical 10 minutes
  • BodyPump – 60 minutes
  • 1.57 miles treadmill, walked at an incline

I always try to do at least 30 minutes of cardio on the days that I take BodyPump. I squeezed in 10 minutes on the elliptical before class, so after BodyPump, I walked on the treadmill for about 22 minutes at 4.0 mph with the incline between 3% and 5%. My calves were killing me by the time I was done! Even a small incline is no joke!

For a post workout snack, I had a Dannon Oikos cafe latte Greek yogurt:

This flavor is one of my favorites.

Lunch this afternoon was a green pepper stuffed with brown rice, spinach, and feta. I also sliced up a giant apple and ate it with some PB2.

  • What was the last movie that you saw?
  • Is there a snack/drink you always get at the movie theater?
  • Do you like watching movies in 3D?
  • Ever walk or run at an incline?

Babies, Movies, and Earmuffs

Late yesterday morning, we went to my in-law’s house to visit my nephew. Danny’s parents were watching him for the day, and since they live so close to us, we just had to go and see the baby.

The boys:

Isn’t he such a cutie?! I just love babies.

If you were expecting to see me in something besides Victoria’s Secret sweatpants, then you were sadly mistaken. Sad, but true.

After visiting with my in-laws and nephew, we took the kids to see Wreck it Ralph at the mall movie theater.

I liked it and thought it was a really cute movie. I liked it better than Hotel Transylvania. The kids loved it too.

After the movie, we ordered new glasses for Jacob and shopped around a bit. I found these adorable ear muffs that I feel in love with. I mean how can you not love leopard print earmuffs with a little bow?! When I showed them to Danny, I think he thought I was joking about actually buying them.

Nope, I wasn’t. I am now a proud owner of an awesome pair of earmuffs.

I wore them to take Jaden to the bus stop, and one of the third-grade boys said wow, those are nice ear muffs. If a third-grade boy approves of your earmuffs then you know they must be awesome.

I don’t like hats or headband ear warmers, so earmuffs it is!

Today’s Workout

  • 1.5 miles treadmill
  • BodyPump – 60 minutes

Total Pile on the Miles: 8.63 miles

I’m still going strong with fitness bingo at my gym. I am currently in first place with 12 bingo cards. Not that it really matters that I’m in first place because all the prizes are done by a raffle.

I haven’t won a weekly prize yet, which is fine with me because all I care about is the final prize. I’m hoping that karma will see that I haven’t won a weekly prize and let me win the gym membership prize.

But if I don’t win, my gym is doing another cool fitness challenge in January where the winner is based on who works out the most, not a raffle.

I hope everyone has a great Monday!

Questions of the day:

  • Do you have nieces and nephews Do you see them often?
  • What’s the last movie you saw? We rented Snow White and the Huntsman this weekend, and I thought it was okay. I felt like the ending kind of dragged on and on.
  • Earmuffs, hat, or headband?

Going to the Drive-In

Yesterday’s Workout

  • 20 minutes stationary bike
  • 60 minutes yoga-lates
  • 2.5 mile walk, outside

I got to the gym about a half hour before yoga-lates started yesterday, so I spent a quick 20 minutes on the stationary bike. I think I completed about 4.5 miles or so. Then I went to yoga, where we spent the class doing yoga and Pilates using the exercise balls. It was actually quite a workout.

After the gym, I came home, and we once again headed to our new nearby trail to walk. On the way there, we saw this animal just running in the middle of the street.

I was convinced that it was a coyote (coyotes are a big problem in our area), but Danny was convinced that it was a dog. He said that it was too big and well-fed to be a coyote. I said that it’s behavior was too erratic to be a dog, and someone would have gotten out of their car to catch it if it was a dog. It was darting all over the road and coming to a complete stop right in front of people’s cars.

We never did find out what it was, but hopefully it didn’t get hit. We went to the trail and walked 2.5 miles while the kids rode their bikes.

Remember how I said that I never wear my race shirts? Well, I wore one yesterday. Usually, I just wear a tank, but the weather was a little mild yesterday, so I needed a t-shirt. This was the lucky race shirt that actually got worn.

Last night after dinner, we took the kids to the drive-in movie theater.

That’s right. I dusted off our time machine, made sure the flux capacitor was in working order, and then set the timing device to 1956.

We really do have a drive-in movie theater near us, and we usually go once or so a summer. I like the drive-in because it only costs $9 an adult and $5 a child, and you get to see two new movies. Plus, you can bring in your own food and drinks and sit outside. We usually get there early to get a good spot, and the kids play football for a while. Once the sun sets, the movie starts!

I packed Skinny Pop popcorn to bring and two of the wholesome junk food bite-lettes to eat. Yeah, if only it were that simple. I ended up feeling snacky at the movies last night, and I ended up eating lots of popcorn, the bitelettes, Twizzlers, and teddy grahams. Darn. But we were also there for over four hours so I hungry.

The oatmeal chocolate chip bites were really good. They tasted like soft cookie dough. The only thing is that I didn’t realize that they had coconut in them, and I am not a big coconut fan. Thankfully, the coconut wasn’t too overwhelming.

Proper drive-in movie attire consists of no makeup and pajamas.

We saw Men in Black 3 and The Chernobyl Diaries. I liked Men in Black 3, not as good as the first two, but it was still good. The ending was my favorite part.

I had never heard of The Chernobyl Diaries before we went to the drive-in, but Danny had seen a preview and thought it was more of a supernatural movie. It wasn’t. I usually don’t like really scary movies, but I was able to handle The Chernobyl Diaries. It was more of a wild animal/freaky radiation people movie. I didn’t like it at all. I think it had the potential to be a good movie, but it wasn’t.

And if you’re wondering, no, I didn’t let my children watch The Chernobyl Diaries. Jaden fell asleep halfway through Men in Black 3, and Jacob brought his game to play for the second movie. We got home about 12:30 am, and I couldn’t wait to go to sleep.

This morning, I’m trying to the round the family up to walk to McDonald’s for some iced coffee :)

Questions of the day:

  • Have you ever been to the drive-in movie theater?
  • Have you seen the Chernobyl Diaries? Thoughts?
  • Do you like coconut?

Sleeping With The Lights On

This morning I had plans to go to the gym. Then I remembered that I was signed up to read at my son’s school. We went to his school, and he picked out a nice ghost story for me to read.

Going to read:

Since I have started taking BodyPump, I have been neglecting the gym. So, after I finished reading, I went to the gym for a quick workout before I picked up son up.

Workout: 3.2 miles on treadmill at a 1.o incline

I haven’t run since the 10k over the weekend, and it was hard. But I got in three miles before I had to go pick my son up from school.

After I picked him up, we headed to Blockbuster to pick up a movie for family movie night.

I rented this little gem for only .49 cents:

A great movie for family movie night, huh? Well, my family’s first choice was The Exorcist, but Blockbuster was out of all three copies. Darn.

I hate Paranormal Activity because yes, it scares me. I’m not afraid to admit it. So, I am not terribly excited to watch it. Actually it sucks the most for Danny because I’ll probably make him sleep with all the light on.

I really did that once. We went to Galena for a weekend and went on a haunted walking tour around the town. I wasn’t scared during the tour, but I was so freaked out that night that I made Danny leave on every single light all night.

And don’t worry – I’m not going to let my kids watch Paranormal Activity. I got them Psycho for them to watch.

Just kidding.

I let my son pick out a couple of kid friendly Halloween movies from Redbox. I just realized that Blockbuster was actually cheaper than Redbox. Well heck, that never happens. This must be some sort of parallel universe. Next thing you know Whole Foods will be cheaper than Target.

Picking out a Redbox movie. He chose Cat in the Hat’s Halloween.

After Blockbuster and Redbox, we came home for lunch. I originally planned on having a flatbread pizza for lunch, but this morning I was deleting old pics off my camera and saw the picture of a veggie sandwich.

I haven’t had a veggie sandwich in a while and decided that I rather have that for lunch.

I used a whole wheat roll and added a mixture of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Then I piled on cucumbers, red & green pepper, red onion, and lots of feta. Viola! The perfect veggie sub!

I was starving and ate the whole thing in about 21 seconds.

Now I’m off to get ready for family movie night – you know, making sure that all the lightbulbs work and are at the highest wattage possible.

Do you like scary movies? What’s your favorite?
