Christmas and Today

It’s the day after Christmas!

Otherwise known as the day that Danny goes back to work and the kids want to open every single new present they got, playing with each one for three minutes before tossing it aside and opening a new one.

Also known as the day Danny goes back to work and Mom has to put together toys that she has no idea how to put together and gives up in frustration.

Also known as the day Danny goes back to work and Mom has to keep going to the store to buy batteries because the 40-pack of AA batteries that she bought isn’t enough.

Yeah, the day after Christmas is never fun.

I started this morning with a workout at the gym.

Today’s Workout

  • Trifecta Class – 60 minutes
  • Approx. 1 mile on indoor track

The gym was surprisingly crowded this morning. I guess everyone is trying to work off their holiday calories. I took the Trifecta class which was awesome and ended up burning a little more than 500 calories.

Then I walked/ran with Jacob on the indoor track for about a mile. I still can’t seem to count my laps without losing count so I figure it was about a mile. Total calories burned: 612. That probably covers the two pieces of cake that I ate last night :)

Yesterday

Yesterday morning, we woke up and had Christmas at home with the kids. Jaden got a furby which he was really excited about.

I have come to realize that maybe Santa made a mistake on that one because furby is majorly annoying. I keep trying to hide him under pillows and beds and stuff but Jaden must have a special connection with the furby because he keeps finding him.

Danny opening gifts:

I got an awesome Kate Spade “H” mug from my grandparent’s and Danny got me a cute coffee mug wearing a sweater.

I love my coffee mugs :)

Danny also got me a remote starter for my car. An awesome accessory for Chicago winters. He was very excited about it. I love it but I love my new purse more :)

After opening gifts, we went to my in-laws and visited with them for awhile. We went to my mom’s in the late afternoon for dinner. Unfortunately, I forgot my camera, so I didn’t get many pictures.

My brother and sister-in-law got me this awesome new water bottle.

Everyone had a great time being together and opening gifts. It was a wonderful Christmas.

Lunch

For lunch this afternoon, I had a egg sandwich on an English muffin with Muenster cheese and homemade strawberry jam that my aunt made.

The jam was amazing!!

Christmas Party, Cookies, and Core Workout

Good afternoon! It’s the day before Christmas Eve! Christmas seemed to come really fast¬†this year but luckily, I finally got everything bought, wrapped, and baked!

Saturday evening, we went to a family Christmas party with my extended family that we only see every few years.

The kids were excited because Santa Claus was there! Well, my niece was a little nervous but at least she sat on his lap. When your two years old, Santa is a pretty scary guy.

Yesterday’s Workout

  • BodyPump – 60 minutes

Yesterday morning, Danny and I went to BodyPump, Jacob ran on the treadmill, and Jaden went to the kid’s room at the gym. After the gym, we came home and I started baking

I was glad that I made most of the cookie dough the day before, because it took a long time to bake all those cookies!

I made chocolate chip cookies, using this recipe.

I also made¬†Butterscotch Reese’s Cookies.

And Peanut Butter Blossoms.

Then, I ate way too many cookies. I have been eating not so healthy lately and can’t wait to get back on track with eating better and tracking my food. I can tell by the way that my clothes are fitting that I need to cut out a few cookies!

Today’s Workout

  • Ab Circuit – Approx. 20 minutes
  • Walk/Run on¬†Track – 30 minutes
  • Stretching/Foam Rolling – 10 minutes

This morning, I attempted to make snowman pancakes for the kids for breakfast.

Eh. They kind of resemble snowmen.

After breakfast, we headed to the gym. Jaden was very excited to bring the cookies we baked to the teachers in the kid’s room.

I started my workout with this ab circuit:

I did each exercise with no rest in between. I did the whole thing three times, resting 1-2 minutes in between. After the ab workout, Jacob and I walked and ran on the indoor track for 30 minutes.

I’m not sure how far we went because I can’t run and count laps. It’s just not happening. Nine laps equals a mile. I lost count after four laps. I focused on running for 30 minutes rather than on mileage.

After the track, I stretched and foam rolled for about 10 minutes. Jacob informed me that he hates stretching and went off to ride the stationary bike…after he picked up every weight on the weight rack and then set them back down.

This afternoon will just be spent getting last-minute things ready for Christmas Eve and Christmas!

Baking and Cooking

Thank you for all your kind words and nice thoughts on yesterday’s post. Crystal’s dad’s double lung transplant surgery went good and he is currently breathing with the new lungs. The doctors say that the road to recovery is a lot riskier than the surgery itself because there’s still a chance his body could reject the lungs. But so far, so good.

Yesterday’s Workout

I went to BodyPump at the gym yesterday morning. I am still working on learning the new release. I have the moves down, now I am just working on the timing. The timing is always what I struggle with learning. I have come to realize that I am not a musically inclined person. I don’t hear or feel the beat and I count along with the beat to save my life. The instructor at my gym keeps telling me that it’ll get easier with time but I think she’s just saying that to make me feel better. :)

After the gym, I finally finished up the rest of my Christmas shopping. I bought myself a little treat to celebrate…or just because I really wanted to eat these chocolates.

They’re the Frango candy cane chocolates and they are amazing.

Yesterday afternoon, Jaden had his holiday party at school and now the kids are off for two weeks!

Today’s Workout

  • A few strength exercises
  • 2.5 miles treadmill

I woke up at about 7 am this morning, so I decided to head to the gym. As I was trying to sneak out of the house, Jaden popped his head out of bed so I brought him to the kid’s room at the gym.

I started out doing a Nike Training Club workout, but my hip and glute really started bothering me.

I have been working out a lot more in the mornings lately and I was really sore last night. I decided that it would be best not to push it, so I hopped on the treadmill, ran one mile, and then walked the rest while chatting with a couple of girls at the gym.

After the gym, I took Jaden to get a much needed hair cut. I swear, my kids’ hair grows so fast!

After waiting forever to get a haircut, we made it home and I started making some cookie dough. I am making a whole bunch of dough so it can refrigerate overnight and be already to be baked tomorrow.

We have a family Christmas party tonight, so I am also making three pans of potatoes. I will be busy in the kitchen!

I wanted to share one of the cookie recipes I am making because they are so darn delicious!!

Reese’s Butterscotch Cookies¬†¬†¬† Adapted from: Sally’s Baking Addiction

Makes approx. 16 cookies

Ingredients:

  • 2 and 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup (1.5 sticks) butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg + 1 egg yolk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup butterscotch chips
  • 3/4 cup Reese’s Pieces

Directions:

  1. Mix flour, baking soda, and cornstarch in a large bowl. Set aside.
  2. In a separate bowl, use a hand mixer to mix softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until no lumps remain. Mix in the egg and combine. Then, mix in the egg yolk until combined. Finally, mix in the vanilla extract.
  3. Pour the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients a little at a time and mix until combined.
  4. Fold in the butterscotch chips and Reese’s pieces with a large spoon or spatula.
  5. Cover bowl and refrigerate for at least two hours and up to 3 days.
  6. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Take dough from fridge and let sit for 10 minutes to soften to room temperature. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll the dough into balls, about 3 tbsp. of dough¬†per cookie. Optional: tip each cookie with more butterscotch chips and Reese’s Pieces.
  8. Bake at 350 degrees 11-12 minutes. Cookies may appear to be undercooked but do not overcook them. They will continue to cook on the baking sheet. Cool for 5-10 minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack.
  9. Enjoy!!

These cookies are delicious and I am excited to give them away as well as eat a couple  myself!

Nike Training Club Workout

Good afternoon!

Yesterday’s Workout

  • Treadmill: walk/run – 10 minutes
  • Nike Training Club Workout – 30 minutes

Last night, I rushed to the gym as soon as Danny got home to take the 5:40 pm HIIT class. I got there at exactly 5:40 pm only to find out that the class was on Tuedays, not Mondays. I mixed up my days.

Since I didn’t have a class to go to, I wasn’t sure what to do. I ended up pulling out my phone and using the Nike Training Club app for a great workout.

I started with a 10 minute warm-up on the treadmill and then I completed the following workout (I did change an exercise or two a little bit):

*Each exercise is done for a minute and with weights of your choice.

  • Straight leg kicks
  • Hopping side to side
  • Jogging in place
  • Sumo squat with press
  • Alternating medicine ball push-ups
  • Deadlift
  • Burpee to shoulder press
  • Side plank
  • Plank row
  • Russian twists
  • Modified push-ups
  • Side lunge with rotation
  • Deadlift with alternating row
  • Opposite arm/leg supermans
  • Sumo squat with press
  • Hip bridges with chest press
  • Deadlift
  • Burpee to shoulder press
  • Side plank
  • Plank row
  • Wide leg deadlifts
  • Russian twists
  • Side lunge with rotation
  • Deadlift with alternating rows

It was definitely a great workout with no recovery time in between so I worked up quite a sweat!

Tea

Yesterday afternoon, I drank the candy cane lane green tea and it was a lot better than I expected. I felt very festive drinking my peppermint tea out of a cute gingerbread mug.

Isn’t it nice how something as simple as a gingerbread mug can make a person happy.

Today’s Workout

  • Butts and Guts Class – 60 minutes

I worked out at the gym again this morning (my hip is sore!) I took the Butts and Guts class and it was awesome. I was supposed to work at the gym after my workout but plans got changed. I have been missing all my morning workouts, so it was nice to get back to the gym this morning.

This afternoon, I am going to practice BodyPump a little bit and then spend some time wrapping presents.

I still have quite a few Christmas presents to buy and tons to wrap!!

Christmas Tree Weekend

Good afternoon! It’s Monday! How was your weekend?

Saturday

On Saturday morning, we went to cut down our Christmas tree.

My niece loved the horses that take you out to the field.

There wasn’t any snow but it was freezing out! After walking the field for a long time and looking at all the trees, we finally found the perfect Christmas tree.

Danny cut it down with Jacob and my brother’s help and then we headed back for some much need hot chocolate!

We ran into Santa and Rudolph :)

Sunday

On Sunday morning, we went to breakfast with Santa at the fire station. My brother-in-law is a firefighter and organized this year’s breakfast.

I might be wrong, but¬†I don’t think my nephew is too fond of Santa…

The kids had fun eating pancakes, visiting with Santa, and climbing in the fire trucks.

As we were leaving to drive back home, it started snowing….and it continued to snow all day long.

Jaden was so excited to face plant himself in a snow hill on the way to the bus stop this morning.

I was happy to run back inside the house because I don’t like snow or 19 degree weather.

Sunday evening, we spent decorating our tree.

Today

I worked for a couple of hours this morning. I’m going to practice the new BodyPump this afternoon and I am thinking about going to the gym tonight.

I always drink coffee in the mornings, but in the afternoon, I usually have a cup of tea. I get so cold in the afternoons and drinking tea helps warm me up!

I usually drink the Tazo green tea, but I saw Celestial Seasonings Candy Cane Lane green tea at Target this weekend and picked it up to try.

I am looking forward to drinking a cup of it this afternoon.

Elf on the Shelf

Our elf, Nick, has been having fun around our house lately. This morning, he made himself some pancakes.

I’m not sure how he managed to get the pancake mix out and cook the pancakes, but he did :)

I feel like I have been so busy and haven’t been around much lately!

Yesterday’s Workout

  • Cardio Fit & Tone Class – 60 minutes

I have been working a lot in the mornings lately, so I haven’t been able to keep up with my normal workouts. To get a workout in, I went to the gym last night and took a cardio fit¬†& tone class.

The class was mostly cardio with a few strength training moves, and then ended with some core work.

Whenever¬†I work out at night, it makes me so hungry! The class started at 6:25 pm so I didn’t want to eat dinner before I went, and by the time I got home at 7:45 pm, I was starving!

I work again this morning, so I might go to the gym again tonight. I am still sore from Sunday’s BodyPump and yesterday’s class, so we’ll see how I feel later.

Besides working, I have been trying to get some Christmas shopping done. I feel like the holidays are sneaking up on me this year and it’s going to be a rush to get everything done!

Danny spent the day after Thanksgiving putting up our outdoor Christmas decorations.

We delivered letters to Santa’s mailbox.

Elf on the Shelf made an appearance.

Jaden has been so excited to wake up every morning and find the elf.

Compression gear doesn’t only benefit runners. Sometimes I wear compression sleeves while exercising because I know my calves get tight and they help with blood flow. Also great for wearing after exercise and running for recovery.

Danny got me a gym bag from Athleta for Christmas last year and I love it. If you get a quality gym bag, it can last for a long time.

  • Clothes

Who doesn’t love new workout clothes?! Tanks, shirts, pants, capris, shorts, jackets, hoodies. There’s lots of clothing options. Or make someone their own personalized shirt…

  • ¬†Spi belt

Great for runners – it goes around your waist and fits lots of stuff.

A couple of years ago, my dad and stepmom got us an entry for one 5k of our choice. They made a cute little gift card and then we just let them know which 5k we wanted to run and they paid for it.

Under The Weather

Good afternoon!

Thank you so much for all the encouraging words about my BodyPump certification. I really appreciate all your support!

I feel like¬†I have finally found something in life that I love doing as a career. I love fitness and although teaching and training make me really nervous sometimes, it’s something that I really enjoy doing. I feel like it helps other people feel good about themselves and improves their wellbeing which makes me happy.

Everyone has to start somewhere, and I feel like I can only improve as time goes on. So thank you for all your kind words!

Today’s Workout

  • BodyPump – 60 minutes

There is a cold going around my house. The kids had it first and it quickly made its way to me so now I am feeling a little bit under the weather. Is anyone else sick around the holidays every single year?!

I debated running this morning but woke up really feeling the cold in my chest and I didn’t think running would be the best idea.

Do I say that all the time?! I debated running…but then I didn’t. I really need to get my butt running more. I did run two miles at the gym on Saturday after I completed a full body workout so that’s something :)

I took BodyPump instead and the nice thing about BodyPump is that you can adjust the weights to your level of fitness and since I wasn’t feeling the best, I just went a little lighter than normal and I still felt good about getting a workout in!

There’s no school this week, so Jaden went to the kid’s room at the gym.

Breakfast

Breakfast this morning was Kashi oatmeal topped with peanut butter.

I buy crunchy peanut butter every once in awhile and every time I do, I remember that I don’t like it. I should stop buying it.

Christmas

It seems like Thanksgiving is a bit late this year and Jaden has been dying to put out Christmas stuff. He’s just like me – he loves Christmas. So, we got out a few boxes of Christmas decorations and started putting some up around the house.

We won’t put our tree up until December so it’s nice to have some other decorations around the house. We always go as a family to cut down a Christmas tree in the beginning of December.

My Race Ragz Giveaway

Good afternoon!

I hope you’re all having a great day. The weather here in Chicagoland is getting cold and I am getting kind of nervous about the 5k coming up on Thanksgiving!

Breakfast

For breakfast this morning, I had a raspberry Greek yogurt topped with granola and pomegranate arils (seeds).

I haven’t¬†bought a¬†pomegranate in forever (basically because I am too lazy to¬†cut them) and I had to refer to the post that I wrote almost two years ago on¬†how to cut a pomegranate. They are easy to cut and get the seeds out, it can just be a tiny bit messy, but then you’re rewarded with delicious sweet pomegranate seeds!

Pomegranates are so good for you because they’re high in vitamin C and potassium, contain fiber, and are low in calories. I topped my yogurt with about an 1/8 of a cup of seeds and it was only about 16 calories.

Last Night’s Workout

  • 3.35 miles treadmill
  • Stretching – 10 minutes

Today’s Workout

  • Cardio Fusion Class – 60 minutes

I went on a field trip with Jacob’s class yesterday so I wasn’t able to workout in the morning. I went to the gym last night and ran on the treadmill. Then this morning, I took the cardio fusion class again. I think I’ll be taking this class on a weekly basis – it’s so much fun.

My Race Ragz

As a Sweat Pink Ambassador, I was recently given the opportunity to make my own custom running shirt from My Race Ragz.

My Race Ragz is a cool website that lets you pick out your style of running shirt from long sleeved to racing singlets.

From there, you can chose a pre-made design from their website, upload your own design, or just add text. You can even add text to the back. They have tons of pre-made designs to choose from including 5k, 10k, half marathons, marathon, barefoot running, maternity, motivational, Ironman, trail running, etc. The possibilities are endless.

Sometimes I get a bit of anxiety when faced with too many choices, but I had tons of fun browsing the website trying to find the perfect shirt to make. After trying to customize a shirt for two days, I finally decided just to add my own text to the front of a shirt. I just wanted to keep it simple. I went with the women’s energy singlet shirt and added text to the front only.

Here’s how it turned out:

I loved how it turned out. I love the pink color and how the pink looks against the white. This shirt is loose but not too loose. I tend to warm up really fast when I am working out so I love that it’s sleeveless and made out of 100% microfiber mesh. It’s moisture wicking and treated to inhibit the growth of odor causing bacteria.

I am on the taller side and have a longer torso, so I felt more comfortable putting on¬†a tank of my own under this shirt. I love how the pink words on the tank look with the pink tank underneath. Maybe I’ll ever wear it to the store :)

Tabata Xpress Class

Good afternoon!

Breakfast

I ran out of the almond flour pumpkin pecan pancakes that I made last week РI freeze them and warm them up in the microwave. Since, I had a little bit of almond flour left, I decided to try out the almond flour pancakes recipe from Matt at Runner Savvy.

Just as he said – they were really good pancakes! I only had about a cup of almond flour left, so I had to adjust the measurements accordingly. I topped mine with a little bit of peanut butter for the perfect breakfast.

I drank¬† my coffee out of my cute gingerbread coffee mug. It’s never to early to drink out of a holiday mug :)

After breakfast, I headed to the gym.

Today’s Workout

  • Stretching, hip bridges, and band walking squats – 20 minutes
  • Walked on treadmill – 10 minutes
  • Tabata Xpress Class – 30 minutes

I took a new class at the gym this morning – Tabata Xpress. If you have never heard of tabata before, it’s a fast but effective and efficient workout. Some Tabata¬†workouts can be as short as four minute long because you’re doing such high intensity exercises. It gets your heart pumping!

Tabata is basically like interval training – you are working hard for a set amount of time followed by a short recovery. The Tabata class I took today consisted of doing a high intensity exercise for 30-60 seconds followed by a short rest time.

By the time 30 minutes are up, you’re ready to be done! In today’s 30 minute class, I burned 300 calories.

I’m going to try and get in a little bit of BodyPump practice this afternoon!
