Doctor Update

Good afternoon!

Doctor Update

Yesterday afternoon, I went to the doctor to see how my hip is progressing. She said that it seems too be doing better and is on it’s way to getting better, but I still have a way to go.

She said I should continue with the physical therapy and as long as I could tolerate it, I could add about 20 minute of cardio and see if that aggrevates my hip. She recommended starting with 20 minutes of slow walking or doing the elliptical at a low resisitance.

She also said that as long as my hip didn’t get any worse, I could do the BodyPump certification in the beginning of September. She said it was up to me, but I might have some pain and be sore afterwards.

It is the only time that the certification is offered and my only chance to do it, so I still plan on doing it.

From what I understand, the BodyPump certification goes something like this:

  • About 10 days prior to the certification,  I will receive a track that I have to completely memorize (squats, chest, biceps, triceps, back, hams, and glutes, etc).
  • During the certification we will perform the whole BodyPump workout 5-6 times during the weekend and teach our part of the workout while being videotaped to receive a critique. 5-6 times of the whole BodyPump workout is a lot. That’s a lot of squats and lunges!
  • After the certification is over, I have to go back to my gym and teach the class while being videotaped. I need to have the whole workout memorized without using notes. Then, I support my video to Les Mills for approval and my certificate.

I am a little nervous because I heard the training is intense, and I hope I don’t get a squat or lunge track to learn with my hip! I look forward to it but  I’m nervous at the same time!

We left for the Dells today. I packed a nice lunch to eat in the car – delicious sandwiches on pretzel rolls, but about 45 minutes into our trip, I realized that we forgot the lunch cooler at home. Bummer.

We stopped at Subway instead.

At least my hummus and pretzel chips made it.

Jacob got Panda Express for lunch, and I had a fortune cookie. My cookie fortune was very fitting:

We just got to the Dells, and I look forward to a nice weekend!

Enjoy your weekend!

Weight Machine Workout

Yesterday

Last night, Danny and I went to the gym, and we did a few of the weight machines.

Going to the gym:

I prefer free weights to weight machines, and I haven’t done the weight machines in a really long time so it was kind of nice to change things up.

My workout:

  • Ab Machine – 50 lbs, 3 sets, 10 reps
  • Biceps Curl Machine – 30 lbs, 3 sets, 10 reps
  • Triceps Extension – 20 lbs, 3 sets, 12 reps
  • Shoulder Press – 20 lbs, 3 sets, 12 reps
  • Lat Pulldown – 40 lbs, 3 sets, 12 reps
  • Row Machine – 40 lbs, 3 set, 12 reps
  • Rear Delt – 20 lbs, 3 sets, 10 reps
  • Pec Fly 30 lbs, 3 sets, 10 reps

I also tried out a few exercises on the cable machine.

Serious Danny:

Not-so-serious Danny:

Today

I had physical therapy for an hour this morning. I did a couple new stretches and the PT used the Graston tools on my hip today instead of my quad. I feel like I am definitely progressing but my hip still does have some pain. I’m just glad it’s not a constant pain like it used to be.

This weekend was supposed to be my first half marathon, so I am bummed about not being able to run it. Since we already had a babysitter lined up for the kids, my wonderful husband made dinner reservations for us. So, instead of running 13.1 miles, I’ll be eating a lot of food :)

It’s been hard knowing that I won’t be able to run the half marathon with all the other Zooma Half Marathon Athletes, but my health is my first priority. I also have other things coming up that I can’t be injured for. My dad just keeps telling me that I’m on the DL (disabled list) and not to rush back into things.

I tried out the pumpkin pie Alt bar for a snack today.

I loved the pumpkin flavor – it was subtle and not too overpowering, but I did think the bar was a little dry. It was good but not my fav. The pumpkin flavor reminded me of fall, my favorite season. Less that two months until October!

It is so beautiful here in Chicagoland, so we picked up niece up early and went to a new-to-us-park.

A few years ago, the kids and I did something that we called “50 Parks Summer.” During the summer, we went to 50 different parks. We wrote each one down in a notebook and marked which ones were our favorites so that we could go back. It took us the whole summer to go to 50 different parks, but we did it.

Maybe I should use the rest of this summer to do “50 Different Frozen Yogurt Flavors.” I think I could eat 50 flavors in 18 days :)

Have a great afternoon!

  • Which do you prefer: weight machines or free weights?
  • Favorite thing you did this summer?

Farmer’s Market, Fitness, and Family

Good Morning! I hope you all are having a great weekend. The weather has been gorgeous here in Chicagoland!

Friday

Friday morning started out with physical therapy. My appointments are about an hour and include a warm-up on the stationary bike, the Graston tools, a few exercises and stretches, and finish up with about 10 minutes of ice on my quad and hip.

Friday afternoon, the kids and I finally made it to the farmer’s market.

Jaden’s favorite part was the guy that made balloons.

I love how the balloon matches his shirt and sunglasses.

I got some veggies and a few pears.

Saturday

On Saturday morning, Danny and I headed to the gym together. I don’t even remember the last time we worked out together.

We did the pyramid upper body workout that I did the other day, followed by a few ab exercises.

The weather was so beautiful on Saturday that we decided to get some sandwiches and take the kids to a small nearby zoo.

We stopped at Pot Belly’s, and I got the Mediterranean veggie sandwich. It is hands-down my favorite sandwich. I also got it ”thin cut” which means they scoop out the bread.

And I got a giant dill pickle.

I love pickles, but sadly Danny, Jacob, and Jaden do not share my love for pickles. Well, maybe it’s not so sad because then I get the whole pickle to myself.

We walked around and looked at the animals for a while.

The kids loved the ducks the most. Of all the animals, they loved the ducks.

Later in the evening, my family came over for a bonfire and s’mores.

I neglected the bug spray and got no less than 47 bug bites. My legs look terrible. Lesson learned.

I was a little bummed because I wasn’t able to run the Diva Dash this weekend, but it turned out to be a really great weekend.

Later this afternoon, I am going on a tour of my new gym that’s opening next month. I am so excited to see it! The gym I’m at now is part of the park district and it’s very small. But the park district is building a huge brand-new gym which will include 7,500 square feet of fitness area, a pool including aqua classes and a pool running class, an indoor walking track, tons of fitness classes, premium locker rooms, and a kid’s room with a rock climbing wall.

I am really excited to try out some of the new classes. I am going to try out the pool running and I am signing up to take a rowing class. I have never used a rowing machine before, so I am excited to try the class!

Have a great day!

  • Do you like pickles?
  • Have you ever taken a rowing class?
  • If you belong to a gym, what’s your favorite thing about it?
  • Any plans for today?

MRI

Good afternoon!

I’m back – yesterday was one of those days when everything that could go wrong did go wrong.

First off, my hip pain has come back in full force. The pain makes it difficult to sleep, sit, and drive. I talked to the sports doctor and she’s worried that it might be a stress fracture, so she wanted me to get an MRI. More on my thoughts on that later, right now I am just waiting on the results.

Luckily, they were able to get me an appointment yesterday afternoon, but not so lucky was that it was an hour away and I needed someone to watch the kids. My stepmom saved the day. She came over to watch the kids while I went to get an MRI.

It was my first MRI and everything seemed to go fine. It took about a half hour, but the driving took me over two hours. Not fun. They said it should take a couple of days before I hear anything, so I am hoping to hear something by Monday.

I didn’t work out yesterday or today. Right now, I think it’s best just to give my body a break. I think upper body workouts are okay and maybe I’ll do one tomorrow, but right now I’m taking it easy.

Breakfast

For breakfast this morning, I made a smoothie. My smoothies are usually really simple - some fruit, a Greek yogurt for protein, and a little OJ or almond milk.

Today, my smoothie had orange cream Greek yogurt, OJ, raspberries, strawberries, and peaches.

Since I didn’t go to the gym this morning, I was a nice mom and took the kids to Chuck E. Cheese. Most people don’t realize that Chuck E. Cheese opens at 9am, and if you go early, you can avoid the crowds.

I hate crowds and I really hate crowds at Chuck E. Cheese. Jaden won the 50 ticket jackpot on one of the games and apparently he was so happy that he just threw himself onto the floor in sheer joy. (Don’t worry, he will be getting a bath later.)

My niece rode the horse 27 times in a row.

Jaden used his tickets to get a giant balloon. Seriously?! I was lucky enough to get it to fit into the trunk of the car.

After Chuck E. Cheese, we stopped at Mariano’s grocery store and I made a salad for lunch.

My salad included romaine lettuce, red onions, cucumbers, green pepper, carrots, artichoke hearts, chickpeas, a few noodles, and crab.

I also got a few chocolate and peanut butter covered pretzels which I ate on the way home :)

Those peanut butter covered pretzels are delicious.

Later this afternoon, I’m going to my mom’s house to visit for awhile!

Have a great afternoon?

Happy Birthday!

Happy 2nd birthday to my adorable niece!

IMG_20130713_124908

Auntie Heather loves you!

016

Yesterday, we spent the day celebrating my niece’s 2nd birthday! She had a Nemo birthday party, and Marlene made the cupcakes – how cute are these Nemo cupcakes?!

117

The Nemo cupcakes were banana flavored, but I went with one of the peanut butter filled chocolate cupcakes.

I made a bow-tie pasta Caesar salad for the party. It’s so good and easy to make. You just mix together green leaf lettuce (or romaine), about 2 cups of cooked bow tie pasta, slivered almonds, shredded asiago parmesan cheese, croutons, and Caesar dressing.

004

I didn’t add the croutons until we got to the party so they wouldn’t get soggy.

Jacob, Jaden, and I:

The kids had a lot of fun playing at the party and my niece loved opening all her presents.

Danny was in charge of holding the melted ice cream while I scooped it out. He almost got that spoon into his mouth without using his hands. Almost…but not quite.

Later in the evening, my family came over to our house for pizza and a bonfire.

I went to bed a little bit early last night because I knew I was running early this morning.

From today:

More on my run tomorrow! :) I’ll tell you this – it wasn’t my best run but ended well.

Have a great Sunday!

Morning Bike Ride

Good morning!

Last night, I mentioned to Danny that maybe I would go for a bike ride this morning instead of running – I think my legs still need a little break from running.

My family all pitched in and got me a nice bike for my birthday last year, but I haven’t had much of an opportunity to ride it this year.

Getting my bike last year:

My son, Jacob, heard me talking about bike riding and asked if he could go with me. I told him that I was going early in the morning, and he could go as long as he didn’t mind waking up early and biking far.

I told him that I would wake him up at 6:30 am to leave. I have a hard enough time dragging him out of bed at 8 am, so I really didn’t think that he’d wake up, but when I went into his room at 6:30 am, he hopped right out of bed.

We left about 6:45 am, and I wore my Spibelt to hold my phone and house key.

We rode 11 miles.

We didn’t ride too fast, and we averaged about 7 minute miles on the bike. I was really impressed with Jacob being able to keep up for 11 miles!

I wore my Garmin 10 just to be able to keep track on how many miles we went.

The Garmin thinks you’re running, but once you upload the activity to the Garmin Connect website, there is a way to go in and change the activity to biking.

I also wore my heart rate monitor. My heart rate really didn’t get up too high, and I only burned 275 in one hour and 23 minutes. That’s it! I know that biking doesn’t really burn too many calories, but I thought it would at least be more than that.

My legs felt pretty good while we were riding, but by the time we were done, my right quad was sore. It wasn’t too terrible, just a little sore.

It was a good bike ride and I’m glad that Jacob woke up to go with me!

Now I’m off to get ready for my niece’s birthday party. I’m making spinach and orzo salad and Caesar salad with bow-tie pasta. Can’t wait for the party!

Have a great day!

Desserts are Delicious

Yesterday, we went to my grandparent’s house to celebrate the Fourth of July.

I couldn’t pass up buying these flag sunglasses.

We cooked out, and I ate lots of food – salmon, orzo, cucumber salad, panzanella salad, fruit.

And dessert.

Marlene made an awesome cake and a orange creamsicle dessert.

My chocolate peanut butter no bake pie came out really good, even though the Oreo crust was a tiny bit crumbly.

We had a great night, but didn’t stay late enough to see fireworks. We did see some on the way home and plan on going to see more tonight. The kids had to get up early for swimming this morning and Danny had to work.

Today’s Workout

  • BodyPump – 60 minutes

After swimming lessons this morning, I went to BodyPump. I took it easy on the squats because my right quad is still sore. Instead of putting the barbell on my shoulders, I held the bar in front of me on the ground as a “third leg” option. This made the squats somewhat easier since I didn’t have that extra weight on my shoulders.

After the gym, the kid and I ran a bunch of errands, and then we stopped at Panera for lunch. Hello, delicious Fuji apple salad.

The only thing the kids will eat at Panera is the bagels. That’s it. Jacob will only eat the chocolate chip bagel with butter, and Jaden will only eat the Asiago cheese bagel with plain cream cheese – sliced but not toasted :)

At least it makes ordering easy.

This evening we’re going to see the fireworks! Have a great weekend!

  • Did you have the day off today?
  • What was the best thing you ate yesterday?
  • Do you order the same thing at restaurants or try new things?

I Thought I Hated Avocados

Good morning!!

Yesterday

Yesterday afternoon, I took the kids to the splash park to play in the water. We stopped at Target and decided to grab something for lunch. I was going to get a salad (Target has really good pre-made salads) but I couldn’t fit in into the cooler I brought with me.

Jen from Healthy Food and Family posted a pic of the Go Picnic lunches on her Instagram earlier in the week, and I remember seeing them at Target before, so I picked one up to try out.

I loved it. The Baja blend fruit and nut mix was the best part. I just wish it had more crackers because I had a lot of hummus leftover.

We played at the splash park for awhile before the water shut off and wouldn’t come back on. I took that as our cue to go home.

My legs were still sore from yesterday’s morning run, so I put on my Pro Compression socks when we got home from the park and left them on until the middle of the night when they started to drive me crazy, and I had to take them off.

Last night, we met up with my family to try out a new Mexican restaurant near us called Mago.

I decided  when I was born that I hated avocados, so my whole life I refused to try them. My grandparents, dad, and stepmom always rave about how delicious the guacamole at Mago. They make it fresh right at your table.

So, after the Guac Lady made the guacamole, I had to admit that it looked pretty good, so I tried it. Apparently my hatred for avocados was unwarranted. I liked the guacamole. A lot.

I guess the moral of the story is don’t spend your whole entire life hating foods that you’ve never tried.

Today’s Workout

  • 4.1 miles, outside

My legs were so sore yesterday (mostly my right quad, knee, and calf) and they were still sore when I woke up this morning, so I debated whether I should run. I am very worried about the half marathon coming up. I just don’t know if my body can handle it.

I opened up the door and the weather was overcast and cool. Perfect running weather, in my opinion. So, I laced up my Mizunos, and out running I went. I planned on running 3 miles, but I felt pretty good so I ran 4 miles. They were slow miles, but I still did it.

My right leg seems to hurt the most when I slow down and when I’m done running. This quad pain is driving me nuts. Maybe I need to cut back on the squats.

I finished up 4 miles and then headed to McDonald’s for some well deserved coffee :)

I think I’m going to head to the sports store today to check out some heart rate monitors. Have a wonderful Saturday!

  • Did you ever think that you didn’t like a food and then you tried it and liked it?
  • Any plans for today?
  • What’s your perfect running weather?

My Best 5 Miles

Yesterday

We spent most of the day yesterday at my grandparent’s house helping with the mulching in the yard.

It was quite a workout.

Luckily, all of our hard efforts were rewarded with dessert.

Today’s Workout

  • 5 miles outside, sunny and cooler

I have discovered the secret to fast running – Mexican food and Mike’s Hard Lemonade.

Last night for dinner I had…well, tons of Mexican food and a couple of blood orange Mike’s Hard Lemonades…and today I ran my fastest 5 miles ever.

Fast for me.

Most surprisingly, my last mile was faster than my first. I don’t think that has ever happened to me. Maybe I should eat Mexican food and drink alcohol more…or maybe not.

I planned on going to BodyPump this morning, but I changed my mind at the last second for a couple of reasons.

1. Today is the last day of school, which means it’s my last day to run outside while the kids are at school. Now, I have to wake up really early to run or run at night.

2. I am scheduled to start my three day juice cleanse tomorrow, and it’s recommended that you don’t engage in too strenuous of exercise while doing a juice cleanse. So, I figured I’d get the 5 miles out of the way today and hopefully get 8 miles in this weekend.

After this morning’s run, my quad is a bit sore. I wore my Pro Compression socks and Aspaersis shorts to run. I probably should have left them on a bit after I ran, but I didn’t. I took one of those pesky shower things instead :)

I also left my hand-held water bottle at home today. It’s nice to have but sometimes it’s a burden to run with. It wasn’t too hot out this morning, so I ran 2.5 miles to the drinking fountain, and then ran the 2.5 miles back.

I ordered a new water bottle to try out.

(Source)

This one is by Amphipod and it sits sideways on the small of your back. Normally, I am not a fan of water-belts around my waist when I’m running, but this one got good reviews. The bottle is curved so it fits on the small of your back and it sits sideways so it doesn’t bounce or slosh around.

I’m going to try it out and see how it goes!

In other news, I am excited because Stephen King’s new book, Joyland, comes out tomorrow.

I am a big Stephen King fan, and can’t wait to read this book. It comes out in paperback only tomorrow (no e-book version) so I will be taking the kids to Barnes and Noble tomorrow. A limited number of limited edition hardcovers will come out next week. It’s supposed to be Stephen King’s first murder mystery “whodunit” type of book.

Have a great afternoon!

Back to Normal…For Now

Good afternoon! Back to school and work today!

My schedule got back to “normal” today also. I have been watching my niece from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm for the past three weeks. But today my brother went back to his normal schedule, so I am back to picking her up in the afternoons.

So, for this week only, I am back to getting to the gym around 8:40 am to workout. I can also run outside in the mornings this week which I am looking forward to because that means I won’t have to run at night. I have a 8 mile run on my 15k training plan for this week that I am going to try to do either Thursday or Saturday.

Monday is the last day of school which means my kids will be home all day and my workouts will have to change up a bit.

Today’s Workout

  • Butts and Guts – 60 minutes

That’s Jaden’s finger across the top of the screen. I just got a new phone, so Jaden is still learning how to use the camera :) I’m pretty sure that my kids can work electronics better than I can.

My new pink Under Armour shoes:

(Instagram)

Yesterday

Yesterday afternoon we went to my grandparent’s house to visit and cook out.

The boys at the grill.

My sister-in-law makes this delicious spinach and artichoke dip with warm pita bread and it’s so delicious.

Marlene made an awesome éclair cake (I’m pretty sure it’s my new favorite dessert). Unfortunately, I didn’t get a picture of it, but it was to die for.

We spent the rest of the afternoon playing Frisbee golf.

I tired it a few times before determining that I am no good at Frisbee golf. Oh well.

Today’s Lunch

Lunch this afternoon was a strawberry and pineapple smoothie that I ate in the car.

I try not to eat meals in the car, but sometimes it happens.

In my smoothie:

  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple
  • Pineapple Greek yogurt
  • 4 ounces Trop50 orange juice

I am loving the single serve cup on my Ninja blender. It’s so quick and easy!

Have a great afternoon!

  • What was the best thing you ate yesterday?
  • Ever play Frisbee golf?
  • If you have kids, are they out of school soon?
