Weight Loss Wednesday!

We did it!!

Danny and I both won the FitFluential DietBet! I’ll admit that I was a little worried there that we wouldn’t make it, but we made it by the skin of our teeth. :)

I ended this DietBet about two pounds higher than my lowest recent weight, which really isn’t much of a difference.

This is my before and after picture – where I am two pounds lighter. I will be taking new before and after pictures soon.

I think that the weight I am currently at is the weight that my body is comfortable with and a weight that I am happy with. It seems like anything below what I am now is too hard to maintain.

In a little bit over a year, I have lost approximately 32 pounds, and I am very happy with that. Danny has lost almost 25 pounds since January, and he’s doing great. I am proud of both of us.

My goal now is just to maintain my current weight, continue to eat healthy and workout, watch my weekend eating, and to be happy.

Today’s Workout

  • Elliptical – 12 minutes
  • BodyPump – 60 minutes
  • 2.4 miles, treadmill

This morning it was storming, cold, and windy outside. Jaden was happy because he got to use his umbrella.

But I had to complete my 15k training on the treadmill rather than outside today. Today’s part of the plan only called for two miles. I actually walked/ran the two miles because my legs were super sore today.

After my workout, I had a Clif Mojo bar.

I actually bought this bar because I had a coupon for it, and it ended up costing 50 cents, but I really liked it and would buy it again.

I also had a well-deserved small package of Cadbury mini eggs that I stole from my kids and hid until the DietBet was over.

Don’t worry – they got so much candy and chocolate for Easter that they didn’t even know these were missing. In fact, I could probably eat half their Easter candy and they wouldn’t even know it.

Eating Better and Jillian Michaels Detox Water

Good afternoon!

Today’s Workout

  • Plank #30 – 3 minutes and 16 seconds
  • Stationary bike – 12 minutes
  • BodyPump – 60 minutes
  • Elliptical - 20 minutes

When I woke up yesterday morning, my ankle was killing me. It hurt to put any pressure on it. I am assuming that I did something to it while I was running on Saturday, but nothing stands out in my mind. I didn’t hurt or twist it at all, but it sure is sore.

It was still sore when I woke up this morning, so I made sure to do low impact cardio like the bike and elliptical. I hope that it starts to feel better by tomorrow because I have to start my 15k training soon.

I probably should have started already but I haven’t. I have never followed a set training plan before, so hopefully I can stick to it!

Danny and I have about nine days left until the FitFluential DietBet is over. I am really going to have to work hard if I plan on losing my 4%. Like I’ve mentioned, I ate pretty much whatever I wanted during spring break and Easter. I haven’t weighed myself, but I know that I’ve gained a few pounds.

I am glad to get back on track because when I eat like crap, I feel like crap. And I felt really crappy all last week, so things will be better this week!

I decided to drink the Jillian Michaels Detox Water again this week. I drank it for a week about two months ago and felt like it helped, so I’m doing it again.

Basically, you mix up the following and drink it throughout the day for seven days while eating healthy meals:

  • 60 ounces distilled water
  • 1 tbsp. sugar-free cranberry juice
  • Dandelion root tea
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice

I had a lot of cranberry juice leftover last time, so I froze it in ice-cube trays and just added one to the pitcher this morning.

I know that they sell bottled lemon juice at the store, but I prefer using fresh lemon juice, so I bought a juicer for only $3.99.

Eating healthy might seem hard at times, but I always feel so much better when I eat better.

Lunch

My stomach doesn’t feel the greatest from eating so much yesterday, so by the time lunch rolled around, I didn’t want to eat anything to heavy. I had a big plate of fruit and veggies with hummus. I also had a vanilla Greek yogurt with PB2 mixed in for some protein.

Weight Loss Wednesday!

Last Night’s Workout

  • Cardio Dance – 60 minutes

Danny also had a dentist appointment yesterday, so he was home at about 5:05 pm. Since Cardio Dance starts at 5:15 pm, I usually can’t go, but since Danny was home early I had just enough time to get to the gym. And it’s always easier to go to the gym when the sun is still shining rather than when it’s dark outside.

Cardio Dance is pretty much Zumba - the workout is just a bit more intense, there’s a lot more jumping, and my heart rate gets up faster. It was a great class, and my legs are still sore today.

After Cardio Dance, I stopped by Jaden’s school and picked up some candy that we ordered for a fundraiser. I bought a few candies for Easter, but I opened the chocolate covered caramels when I got home.

I had two pieces as an after dinner treat – 54 calories. Not bad.

As I’ve said before – I believe in everything in moderation and always save some calories for an after dinner treat. I was very proud of myself for only eating two. Those little candies are the ones that I have sometimes a hard timing stopping once I’ve started eating them.

I was hungry when I got home from Cardio Dance class. Danny made me salmon belle mar for dinner while I was gone. (Salmon stuffed with crab – bought pre-made at Target). I also threw together a quick veggie salad.

I used romaine lettuce and added red pepper, green pepper, cucumbers, and pickles (my fav)! I topped with the a bit of garlic hummus as dressing.

I like making salads at home, but I always get stuck on the dressing. Dressing from a bottle isn’t as good as dressing from a restaurant, and I can never find a bottled dressing that I like. Or I buy one and don’t use it often and end up having to throw it away. So, lately I have been using hummus as dressing.

Weight Loss Wednesday!

We’re going into the second week of the FitFluential DietBet. When I first weighed in, my weight was up quite a bit – I was coming off a weekend of eating a lot and other things were going on…so my weight is down quite a bit this week. I have lost about 3.5 pounds since last week, but that just puts me back at my normal weight.

Danny also joined this DietBet with me (because I asked him to…repeatedly). He is doing awesome as usual! He has lost about 3 pounds since last week and now weighs less than 200 pounds. His first mini goal was to weigh under 200 pounds and he did it! He currently weighs 198 pounds (he’s 6’3″) and he’s still going.

He has lost about 21 pounds since January! He seems to lose weight a lot easier than I do. Maybe it’s a male thing :)

Today’s Workout

The other day my BodyMedia Fit band broke.

I admit that I experienced a moment of panic. I have been wearing this device constantly for three months, and it measures my calories burned, steps taken, and sleep.

Although I have gone my entire life without wearing one, I have grown used to it and checking my stats everyday. So, when it broke, I panicked. Luckily, it’s still holding on by a thread. I emailed BodyMedia, and they were awesome enough to send me out a new band at no charge.

I love a company with great customer service that stands behind their product. Now I just hope that it holds on until the new band arrives :)

Healthy Eats

The FitFluential DietBet officially started today! There’s still time to signup if you want to join – the pot is up to $9925!! Danny and I are weighed in and ready to go!

My weight is up a bit recently, but I also ate way too much this weekend. (What? You’re not surprised because I overeat every weekend? Story of my life.) My weight always seems to fluctuate a few pounds so I’m not too worried about it.

I am going to try really hard to keep my weekend eating under control for this DietBet. I will continue with Weight Loss Wednesdays starting next week. When this DietBet is over it will mark one year since I started my weight loss jounrey :)

Yesterday

We made sure to eat a good dinner last night. I made garlic brown sugar chicken for Danny and the kids.

I followed this chicken recipe that I found via Pinterest. I also made green beans and brown rice. I tend to make a broccoli and carrots so the green beans were a nice change.

Jaden wouldn’t touch them though. He wanted soup instead of green beans. Whatever. I’m lucky I got him to eat the chicken.

I had salmon, green beans with onions, and a clementine.

I also threw some blueberries on my plate at the last-minute. I’m pretty sure that I eat clementines and blueberries every single day. And when summer comes, it’ll be watermelon and strawberries. Yum! I love summer fruit.

Today’s Workout

  • Plank #12: 2 minutes and 52 seconds. I was dying today. Dying.
  • 1.05 miles treadmill, walked
  • Butts and Guts class – 60 minutes

I plan on starting my training plan for the Biggest Loser 15k soon, I just have to figure out how to work it into my schedule. I am so used to taking my exercises classes on certain days so it’ll be an adjustment to stick to a training plan.

I received this email on what to eat post workout:

I seem to be doing good with post work out eating because I eat almost all of these foods – usually for lunch. My favorite post workout snack is a protein bar or Greek yogurt.

Lunch

Lunch this afternoon was a bagel thin with three egg whites and provolone cheese.

I also had veggies with hummus, a clementine, and blueberries. Yes, again. I told you, everyday.

Tonight, I want to bring Danny over to TJ Maxx because I saw some pieces of furniture that I really like over there. I am just worried that if I buy one dresser or nightstand at TJ Maxx that I won’t be able to find other pieces to match it somewhere else.

FitFluential DietBet

As you guys know, I’ve mentioned DietBet in the past, and I thought I’d talk a little bit more about it today. I think the concept behind DietBet is very unique and a great motivator to people like myself who are trying to lose weight – whether you are just beginning your weight loss journey or you’re just trying to lose those last few pesky pounds.

Here’s how it works:

The idea behind DietBet is simple – you pay a specified amount of money, then you have four weeks from the time the game begins to lose 4% of your body weight. So, for example, if you weigh 200 pounds, you would need to lose eight pounds. All of the player’s money goes into the pot, and if you’ve lost your 4% after four weeks, you split the pot with the other winners.

This is a great way to do it because one person doesn’t win the pot – as long as you lose your 4%, you’re guaranteed to win money back!

You submit  two photos of yourself – one of your weight on the scale, and one of a full body picture of yourself on the scale. DietBet confirms your pictures and you’re good to go!

The losing weight part is pretty much left up to you, but the online DietBet community is amazing. Each game has its own message board where you can post your workouts, what you ate – good and bad, encourage others, get encouragement from others, and ask questions. It’s a great way to connect with people who are trying to lose weight just like you.

You can post your weight (it can be kept hidden) as you go, but you are only required to actually post it twice – at the beginning and the end of the game. At the end of the game, you submit another picture of yourself on the scale and of your weight.

FitFluential is holding a DietBet that I am very happy to be a part of – participating in a DietBet holds me accountable for my actions and makes me really think about whether or not I need that second cookie…or third :)

Jillian Michaels Detox Water

DietBet

My final weight has been submitted and reviewed by Diet Bet, and I am an official winner! (Danny is submitting his weight tonight.) I lost a total of 6.6 pounds in four weeks. Now, we just have to wait until everyone weighs in to see how much money we won!

I am a little nervous now that the Diet Bet is over. Challenges like Diet Bet and The Biggest Loser program that I participated in at my gym over the summer really help keep me motivated and accountable. Once they’re over, I feel like I’ll start slipping into my old habits of overeating and consuming way too much sugar. Then, I think about how far I’ve come, and how I don’t want to gain back any of the weight that I loss.

I have lost 34 pounds since April 2012 and that is an accomplishment for me. I will be posting updated weight loss pics soon. But we have a lot of days coming up soon that require being around a lot of snacks and food, and I sometimes have a hard time with portion control.

Jaden’s family birthday party is Saturday and we’re having pizza, salad, snacks, and cake. Tuesday is his actual birthday, and he wants to go to Red Robin (hello, bottomless steak fries). Thursday is Valentine’s Day, and I plan on making stuffed shells…and I bought Funfetti Valentine’s cake mix.

Then, my dad and stepmom’s birthday is the following weekend, and there will be more cake involved.

I just really need to stick to making healthy choices and having treats in moderation. But sometimes that’s easier said than done. We’ll see how it goes!

Detox Water

I was browsing on Pinterest the other day, and I came across a recipe for Jillian Michael’s detox water/tea. Basically, you mix up the following ingredients:

  • 60 ounces distilled water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar-free cranberry juice
  • 1 dandelion root tea bag
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice

Then, you drink the whole thing throughout the day. You mix up a new batch everyday for seven days. It’s supposed to help you remove the toxins from your body and shed any water weight.

The thing that I liked about this detox tea is that it is not a fast. You continue to eat during the day as you normally would. It’s not a cleanse or a fast where all you do is drink and not eat any food. You simply drink the tea all day in addition to your regular diet.

The ingredients are pretty simple and normal, so I was thinking about trying it out just to see if it helps or has any benefits. I’m thinking about starting it next week and drinking the tea for one week.

Today’s Workout

  • Step Class – 60 minutes

There is one word for today’s Step class: Intense. The normal Step instructor was out today because of back problems, and the sub was one of the other instructors (she was also one of the instructors for the Biggest Loser, Body Pump, and a personal trainer) and she is tough! Needless to say, today’s Step class was a great workout.

After my hard workout, I treated myself to a McDonald’s coffee and coffee yogurt. I figure it’s better than chocolate cake. Well, nothing’s better than chocolate cake. I figure it’s got to be healthier than chocolate cake.

Lunch

Lunch this afternoon was scrambled egg whites with red onion, green pepper, broccoli, and feta cheese with peanut butter french toast and blueberries.

Whenever I take my camera out, this little lady automatically starts saying cheese, cheese.

Weigh-In Wednesday

Good morning! I have to start off with the weigh-in for DietBet because I am very excited! Since last Wednesday, I have lost exactly 4 pounds! That means I have lost a total of 5.4 pounds since Danny and I started the DietBet.

The best part is that I am finally below the weight that I was stuck at for four months. My scale hasn’t budged since I finished the Biggest Loser back in September. Now, I am down 5.4 pounds, and I have 15 days to lose .6 of a pound, and I will win my DietBet! I’m very happy if you can’t tell :)

I think the biggest factor is my weight loss has been the weekend eating. I have been a lot better at sticking to healthy eating during the weekends, which is hard sometimes, but it’s worth it when I see the difference that’s it’s made.

Yes, Danny and I went out to dinner last weekend, and ate a lot more than we usually do, but the next day, we were right back on track. I think that shows that one meal isn’t going to ruin your healthy eating and cause you to gain weight. As long as one meal doesn’t turn into overindulging the whole weekend, it usually won’t hurt. Hey, I ate a pizza and cheesecake and still lost 4 pounds!

Yes, Danny, I could hardly believe it either!

On the other hand, what works for me might not work for you. Everyone is different, and loses and gains weight differently. Don’t go out and eat cheesecake saying you’ll lose weight just because I did. But eating healthy and focusing on whole foods and less processed foods can benefit everyone.

Enough about me – Danny also weighed in today. He lost 1.8 pounds this week, and 12 pounds total. Great job, Danny! He is already at his 4% weight loss, so as long as he doesn’t gain any weight he’s good.

It was to be expected that he lost a smaller amount this week since he lost 10 pounds last week, but he is still doing awesome!

The hardest part will be the Superbowl – who doesn’t love snacks and beer at a Superbowl party? (Well, I hate beer, but others enjoy it. Danny) Luckily, the DietBet ends four days after the Superbowl, so even if we have a few snacks, we still have four days before we have to weigh in.

Last Night’s Dinner

Another smoothie!

I have been loving smoothies lately. I’ve jumped on the smoothie bandwagon…too bad I decided to do it in the middle of winter. They make me cold.

Last night’s smoothie included:

  • frozen strawberries
  • frozen blueberries
  • almond milk
  • crushed ice
  • plain Greek yogurt
  • vanilla protein powder
  • chia seeds
  • a little water

I also ate it with about 1/4 cup of cinnamon Cheerios for a little bit of crunch. The smoothie with the Cheerios was 309 calories and 24.7 grams of protein!

Today’s Workout

  • AMT Machine – 15 minutes
  • BodyPump – 60 minutes
  • 1.62 miles, treadmill

My gym got a new treadmill that I really like.

After my workout, I treated myself to a McDonald’s coffee…mostly because I was freezing and the coffee was hot.

Lunch

I was hungry by the time lunch rolled around today, so I made myself a cheese and veggie quesadilla, brussels sprouts, and a clementine.

Yum!

Weigh In Wednesday: DietBet

Last Night

I made spaghetti squash for dinner yesterday – man, those things are hard to cut open.

I topped my squash with roasted broccoli and onions,spinach, marinara sauce, feta cheese, and parmesan cheese. I also had a piece of tilapia for some protein.

Danny has been eating really well too. He had chicken, brown rice, and roasted broccoli.

After dinner, Danny talked me into going to the gym. At first I didn’t want to because we just ate, and I didn’t want to go into the dark and cold night. I’m motivated in the mornings, but at night, I just want to stay inside, especially in the winter.

But I knew Danny was right, and we should go to the gym – so we did.

Look at that – no make-up once again. Hey, sometimes you don’t wear make-up and sometimes you have crazy “I just woke up” hair. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Last Night’s Workout

  • 2.08 miles treadmill, walked

I just walked on the treadmill for about 30 minutes last night since I had just eaten an hour prior. I don’t do very well working out after I eat, so I took it easy.

Even though I just walked, my knee was killing me by the time I was done, so I made sure to ice it when we got home. Dumb knee. My shoulder already hurts. Wait your turn, knee. Wait your turn.

Danny is one of those fun guys at the gym that runs on the treadmill sideways. If I even thought about running on the treadmill sideways, I would fly right off the back of the thing and crash into the wall – just like those lucky Biggest Loser contestants on their first day on the ranch. I guess Danny is cooler than me.

After our workout, I had an Atkin’s bar. I eat them as a dessert because when I close my eyes they almost taste like a Snickers bar. Almost.

Today – DietBet Update

Well, it’s officially been one week since Danny and I started the DietBet. It’s been going really good, and I am happy with the progress Danny and I have been making so far.

I weighed myself this morning and since last week, I’ve lost 1.4 pounds, which I am happy with. Going into the diet challenge, I knew that I was going to have a hard time because I have reached a weight loss plateau, so I am happy with any weight loss.

Danny has lost 10.2 pounds!! 10.2 pounds! Can you believe that?! (I must be a good coach :) ) It’s so awesome and he’s doing so great! He’s already lost his 4% of body weight. As long as he can maintain that weight loss for three more weeks, he’s won his DietBet!

It’s so amazing to me – 10.2 pounds in one week. When I first started trying to lose weight, and really cut the crap out of my diet, I lost seven pounds in my first week. I think you lose a large amount in the beginning and then it slowly tapers off. But it really shows how much weight you can lose just by getting rid of the junk in your diet – soda pop, candy, alcohol, white flour, etc.

Great job, Danny!

Breakfast

Breakfast this morning was one serving of Special K Protein with almond milk.

Today’s Workout

  • Adaptive Motion Trainer Machine – 16 minutes
  • BodyPump – 60 minutes

My legs were still sore when I woke up this morning, mostly my right one, so I got out the poor neglected foam roller. Whenever I have the foam roller out, Jaden must use it. I think it’s some kind of rule.

The best part was when I was foam rolling Jaden would walk around me saying stuff like, I know it hurts, but you just have to do it and I think you should be doing this 20 minutes a day. Who knew I had such a little trainer on my hands?!

My gym got a new machine that I tried out this morning called an adaptive motion trainer (AMT). It’s kind of similar to an elliptical…but different. It took me a minute to get used to but once I did, I liked it. You can change the length of your stride, which you can’t do on a regular elliptical. I will be using it again.

After the AMT machine, I went to BodyPump. I can’t wait until the new gym opens later this year because BodyPump gets crowded sometimes, and the room is very small.

Lunch

Lunch this afternoon was something that I used to make a lot but haven’t lately – a veggie flatbread pizza!

I used a Flatout flatbread and topped it with organic pizza sauce, ren onions, broccoli, green pepper, spinach, mozzarella and feta cheese. I also had some fruit on the side.

Tonight, I have plans to go to yoga…just gotta get my butt out of the house.

Surgery Fake Out

So, my brother ended up not getting back surgery yesterday. Oh, he went to the hospital, got prepped for surgery, and was knocked out by the anesthesia, but never got surgery.

It turns out that the doctor found some kind of infection and were unable to operate. Better to be safe than sorry. So, now he has to take an antibiotic, come back next week, and do everything all over again.

The worst part is that they had already given him the anesthesia, so he had no idea that he wasn’t getting the surgery. So, when he woke up the doctor had to explain that he didn’t get the surgery, his back isn’t better, and he has to come back next week. Oh, and he left the hospital in worst shape than when he arrived.

My poor brother can’t catch a break.

I took my niece home so that my sister-in-law could get my brother home and settled. And we’ll do all this again next week.

Today

Breakfast this morning was Kashi oatmeal with peanut butter.

After the kids and I ate breakfast, we headed to the gym.

Luckily, my niece did good in the kid’s room since Jacob and Jaden were in there with her.

Today’s Workout

  • 3.12 miles, treadmill

I didn’t want to leave the kids for too long, so I just ran/walked a quick three miles on the treadmill.

Happy New Year 2013

Happy 2013!!

Doesn’t that sound so weird to say?! 2013. When I was young, thinking about being an adult and the year 2013 was something that seemed so foreign and far away. Now here I am – 30 years old in the year 2013, married with two kids. Life really seems to speed up when you’re an adult. The years really seem like they’re flying by, as I get older and my kids grow up. That’s why I think it’s important to take time to appreciate the small things and try to live positively.

I hope that you all had a great and safe New Year’s Eve. I’ll recap our New Year’s Eve either later today or tomorrow. Today, I wanted to share some of the things that Danny and I plan on doing in 2013 to be healthier and more active.

1. We’ve decided to join a weight loss challenge through Sarah Fit’s Diet Bet. Sarah Fit is a YouTube fitness guru and blogger. She is hosting a weight loss challenge through the DietBet website. The concept is pretty easy: you pay $30 a person to join. Then, you have 4 weeks to lose 4% of your body weight. (You photograph yourself on the scale with a special “word of the day” so DietBet know you’re being honest). After the 4 weeks is over, everyone who lost 4% of their body weight splits the pot. So, if you lose your 4%, you’re guaranteed to win back your $30, plus more if other people didn’t reach their goal.

I have done Sarah’s Diet Bet in the past, and I really liked it. Paying money really helps me work hard so that I don’t lose that money. I also like the challenge aspect of it. I feel like I can push myself harder in challenge than I can when I’m just doing it myself. Last time, I paid $25, lost exactly 4% of my body weight, and won $40!

The best part is that anyone can sign up! Danny and I both plan on signing up, and the challenge starts January 10th and ends February 6th. If you’re looking to lose a few pounds, I would recommend joining. Come do it with us!

2. I am going to be trying out the Body Media Fit device. I was lucky enough to win this device via FunkyMonkey Snacks on Twitter.

From the BodyMedia website:

BodyMedia FIT Armbands automatically track the calories burned during your daily activities.  The armband works as a fitness monitor to measure the intensity of your workouts and also monitors the quality of your sleep, an important factor in weight loss. The information tracked can easily be managed with BodyMedia’s online Activity Manager. Just add in the easy-to-use food log and you have the right information to improve your weight loss.

So, basically it tracks your steps taken, calories burned, and sleep. You can input your food so that you can make sure you’re burning more calories then you consume in order to lose weight. I have never used a device like this before, so I am excited to try it out…as long as it’s not too complicated :)

3. I plan on using my Garmin 10 to help improve my running. You can set it to help you run at a certain pace, and it alerts you if you’re going too fast or too slow. In 2013, I would like to run my fastest 5k and 10k. I’ve only run one 10k in 2011, and I would like to beat that time.

4. Food journaling. I have been majorly slacking with my food journal since the holidays. I plan on tracking everything I eat again. Tracking my food and calories is 100% what helped me lose 30 pounds. I got this super cute notebook from Marlene that I plan on using as my food journal.

Danny is trying to lose a little bit of weight, and while I told him that he doesn’t have to keep a food journal, it helps a lot to see how much your actually eating. Even keeping a food journal for a week or two can be helpful.

5. Eating healthier. I have been slacking on healthy eating these past few weeks. Now that the holidays are over I feel like I can get back on track with making healthy choices with treats in moderation. I am going to try to stay away from processed foods, and eat fruits, veggies, whole grains, fish, etc.

We stopped at Whole Foods to pick up a few things.

I do most of my grocery shopping at the regular grocery store, but there are a few things that I like from Whole Foods – the meat and fish, the produce, and the green tea drinks. I bought salmon from the fish department, grilled salmon from the prepared foods to put on salads, teriyaki chicken and chicken lunch meat for Danny, and some pineapple and salad.

6. Fantasy Fitness League – Danny and I are signed up for the newest fitness challenge at our gym, and we are going to have some competition!

I am really looking forward to the this challenge, and it will motivate Danny to get to the gym on a regular basis. I know it’s hard for him since he works full-time and has to deal with me and the kids :) I give a ton of credit to people who have jobs, a family, and workout out on a regular basis. It’s tough.

So, that’s the plan for 2013! I am looking forward to a great year!
