Back to Butts and Guts Class

Good afternoon!

I worked until 2pm yesterday and I usually bring my gym clothes with me so I can workout when I get off of work, but I still wasn’t feeling that great yesterday so I just went home instead.

Then, I randomly decided to take the 5:15 pm Butts and Guts class at my gym.

I never workout at 5:15 pm and I haven’t been to Butts and Guts class forever but I’m glad I went!

I got a great workout and we did lots of exercises with resistance bands. I burned 409 calories according to my Polar heart rate monitor.

Do I think heart rate monitors are 100% accurate? No. But I do think they give you a good estimate of what you burned. I personally don’t eat back the calories that I burned during a workout but I do like to see my heart rate to make sure I’m working hard enough especially during HIIT workouts.

Today, I was back at the gym this morning for a chest, triceps, and core workout. After strength training, I did about 20 minutes of cardio on the Stairmaster.

I finished up with a little bit of stretching.

I work tomorrow, on Saturday we’re going to the Chicago Marathon expo, and then on Sunday Danny will be running the marathon! I can’t wait. I’m so proud of him!

Have a great day!!

First Group Fitness Class in Five Months

Yesterday, I went to my first group exercise class in five months!

My physical therapist gave me the okay to try a few exercise classes like butts & guts, yogalates, and barre as long as I do what I can and don’t over do it.

Yesterday, I went to the Butts and Guts class and we did a Brazilian butt workout that included a lot of squats, lunges, and core work. I did what I could and didn’t push myself. Since I can’t really jump yet, I stuck to regular squats and lunges while everyone was doing jumping squats and lunges.

It was great to get back to a group class but it was hard. The class went from 9:15-10:15 and I had physical therapy at 11:30 am. Probably not the best planning on my part but Butts and Guts is only offered on Tuesday mornings. We took it fairly easy in physical therapy doing manual muscle work, core exercises, and balance exercises.

Very happy to be taking a class again:

After dinner last night, we took the kids to drop off presents for the Giving Tree, and Jaden delivered his letter in Santa’s mailbox.

20141202_182546 (1)

Then we drove around and looked at some Christmas lights. I love looking at Christmas lights!!

When I woke up this morning, I was dying. Dying. I am soooo sore. I’m more sore than I am in pain but my quad is bothering me quite a bit. I think classes are definitely something that I’ll have to ease back into. I probably won’t take Butts and Guts again for awhile because I have physical therapy every Tuesday for the next month.

I did go to the gym this morning but took it super easy. Since I’m sore, it’s better for me to move a little bit than to not move at all so I did the stationary bike for 30 minutes and walked slowly on the treadmill for 25 minutes.

I finished up with some foam rolling and stretching.

So sore.

For the past few days, I have been having a Kodiak Cakes waffle for lunch.

I usually buy the Kodiak Cakes Power Cakes mix because it has a good amount of protein but I accidentally grabbed the whole wheat, oat, and honey mix at the store. It’s still delicious. I just add in an egg white for a little bit more protein. And I always add a tablespoon of Ghirardelli mini chocolate chips because chocolate makes everything better.

This afternoon, I am going to rest my body a bit and wrap some Christmas presents! I have a lot to get done!

Have a great afternoon!

  • Do you take group fitness classes? Favorite?
  • Waffles or pancakes? I love waffles!
  • Have you started wrapping Christmas presents yet?

Tradewinds Tea

good afternoon!

Yesterday’s Workout:

  • 1 mile, indoor track
  • Butts and Guts class – 60 minutes
  • Women on Weight class – 45 minutes

On Tuesdays when I don’t work, I always get a really good workout in! I usually get to the gym about 20 minutes before class starts, so I ran a mile on the indoor track. Then, I took the Butts and Guts class where the instructor incorporated some tabata work. Right after Butts and Guts, I head to Women and Weights with a few of the women from class.

Yesterday, we started with some core work followed by shoulder exercises. We did upright rows (I managed 40 lbs) followed by front and lateral raises. This morning, my right (of course!) glute and shoulders are sore. I also practiced BodyPump for awhile so that added to my soreness.

After my workout, I stopped at McDonald’s for coffee. I can’t even remember the last time I drank a McDonald’s coffee, and I used to drink it on a daily basis. I also had a chocolate peanut butter Lara bar.

Since, I didn’t have to watch my niece yesterday, I made a quick trip to Whole Foods. I bought a new insulated hot/cold bag because I dearly love my hot/cold bags.

I only bought a few things (and the bill was still over $40!) including a salad for lunch.

I also picked up some cut-up mango (my fav), California roll sushi (the only sushi I have been brave enough to try), and few Kind bars for me and Builder bars for Danny, shredded cabbage for fish tacos, and pineapple.

Tradewinds Tea

I was recently sent some delicious Tradewinds tea to try.

I have only discovered my love for tea over the past few years, compared to Jaden who started drinking tea at age 2. He was drinking tea long before I was 🙂

Tradewinds sent me two teas to try out – sweet and unsweetened. I drank the unsweet with lunch yesterday.

I do like unsweetened tea although I prefer it sweetened. The Tradewinds unsweetened tea was good enough to drink on it’s own but I did add one packet of Truvia to satisfy my sweet tooth. I also love that the bottles are big so you get a good amount of tea.

I had my little tea connoisseur try out the sweet tea this morning. He had just woken up and could barely open his eyes:

He gave it two thumbs up…or tried to.

He loved it and probably would have drank the whole bottle if I let him. We did a taste test with the unsweetened tea and the sweet tea. Jaden said that he loved the sweet tea but didn’t enjoy the unsweetened tea. But he did say that he wanted to save the unsweetened tea to mix with lemonade.

I drank the sweet tea too and it was really good. I’m so used to water that sweet tea sometimes tastes like a treat. I love that it was perfectly sweet and not too bitter or overly sweet. Two thumbs up.

Yesterday night, we went out and bought Frozen. I can’t even remember the last time that I bought a DVD. And we haven’t even seen Frozen yet. But I have heard such wonderful things about it that I decided it would be the first DVD we’ve bought in like 5 years.

Danny said that he’s never seen me so excited about a movie, including Harry Potter. Come on now, we all know that Harry Potter is all about the books.

Today’s Workout

  • BodyPump – 60 minutes

Have a great day!

  • Do you like tea? Sweet or unsweetened?
  • Have you seen Frozen?
  • Last DVD or Blu Ray you bought?

Disclaimer: I was provided with the Tradewinds tea at no charge. All opinions are my own…and Jaden’s.

Yesterday’s Workout

  • 8.23 mile bike ride

Yesterday evening, the kids went to a last-minute park district activity, so that left Danny and me with two unplanned hours of kid-free time. That never happens. We decided to take advantage of the free time and go for a bike ride.

It was our first bike ride ever with just the two of us.

On our bike ride, one of my biggest fears happened – as we were riding down the bike trail, a huge snake slithered out right it front of my bike (I don’t care what Danny says – that snake was huge. And I don’t care what my dad says, it was probably poisonous).

Okay, maybe it wasn’t huge or poisonous, but it really startled me. That is not my idea of fun. I screamed and took off on my bike – that was the fastest and hardest that I have ever rode my bike in my life. Danny slammed on his breaks because my scream scared him and he had to avoid hitting the snake.

As I am pedaling away as fast as I can, I just hear him laughing behind me. Thanks, Danny. That’s sweet. All I can say is thank goodness I hadn’t been running. I would have been even more upset…but I probably would have ran really fast.

After that little fiasco, we rode a total of 8.23 miles. I burned 319 calories this time, a little bit more than my bike ride with Jacob.

Danny and I rode some fast miles, but we also rode some slow miles because my quad would start to hurt. It was a really nice bike ride and I’m glad that I got to ride with my husband.

When we picked the kids up and told them about the snake, the first thing Jaden asked was if I took a picture of it. No, I didn’t stop to take a picture of it – I was busy pedaling as fast as I could and watching my heart rate jump from 110 to 160 in 5 seconds.

I have to share this picture of my niece in my Spibelt because she’s so darn cute. 🙂

Today’s Workout

  • Butts and Guts Class – 60 minutes

Butts and Guts class was tough today. It was a substitute instructor and she did the whole class on the Bosu ball, which was tough. It was a lot of leg work which killed my already sore legs. I am all for hard workouts, but I have a feeling my legs aren’t going to be too happy tomorrow.

Have a great afternoon!

Good afternoon!

Today’s Workout

  • Butts and Guts Class – 60 minutes

My calves were still tight when I woke up this morning. Luckily, once I started moving around a bit, they loosened up a lot. The last time they were this bad was last year when I had to go to the sports doctor and go to physical therapy.

Now, I know how to handle them a little bit better. I know not to push myself if they’re too tight and painful. I stretch and foam roll more and I take ibuprofen when needed.

And of course, we did tons of squats and lunges in Butts & Guts class today. I just went at my own pace and regressed some of the exercises if I needed too. I did made sure to put on my Pro Compression socks when I got home though.

Post workout, I had a Larabar.

Larabar recently sent me a few of their bars to try out.

Two of their regular bars in Apple Pie and Peanut Butter Cookie. Two of their Uber bars in Roasted Nut Roll and Bananas Foster.

I had a hard time deciding whether to try the peanut butter cookie or roasted nut roll first. I have never had an Uber bar so I went with that one.

It was so good. I loved all the different nuts in it – roasted almonds, cashews, roasted peanuts, pecans, and roasted macadamia nuts. Yes, it tasted just as delicious as it sounds.

Larabars are gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, non-GMO, vegan, and kosher.

I think I might try these as pre-run fuel.

Speaking of running, I can’t remember if I mentioned that Danny and I are running a 5k on Saturday. I think Marlene is going to come out and run it with us too!

It’s just a small local race and raises funds for the Sarcoma Foundation of America. It’s a nice race. It’s close to home and last year they had raffles and free Italian ice, which the kids loved (okay, I loved it too).

Last year, Danny and my stepmom both placed for their age groups.

Last year’s race:

The kids are signed up for the 1k again this year!

The only thing I’m worried about is that it’s supposed to be 90 degrees on Saturday. Yay.

Have a wonderful day!

  • Ever have a Larabar? Favorite flavor?
  • Any races coming up?
  • Do you like small races or big races?

Larabar sent me some of their bars to try out and review on my blog. All opinions are my own.

Birthday Dinner and Half Marathon Training

Last Night

I opened my birthday presents from Danny and the kids last night.

How did he know that I wanted a Ninja blender? (It might have been because I cut a picture of it out of a magazine and put it on his dresser along with a $5 off coupon).

I am very excited to use my new Ninja blender, and I love that it comes with a travel blending cup!

My current blender isn’t very strong, so I kept having to take off the lid, stir it, add more liquid, and stir it again. The whole process takes forever, so I can’t wait to try this baby out!

I couldn’t decide where I wanted to go for my birthday dinner (you don’t have to cook on your birthday :)), and we finally ended up at Joe’s crab shack. I think I eat crab once a year (on my birthday) because it’s so darn expensive, but it’s so good. I had the delicious king crab legs.

The kids thought it was hilarious that I had to wear a bib.

Today’s Workout

  • Butts and Guts – 60 minutes

I set my alarm for 5:20 am this morning to get up and run….and I kept sleeping instead. I just couldn’t get up, but actually it worked out good because I am supposed to meet the other girls from the Chicago Half Marathon challenge to run tonight.

I am supposed to be in Chicago at 6pm tonight to meet at a running store. I am assuming I’ll meet the trainers and the other girls that were picked, and then we’ll go for a three mile run. I’m nervous.

I’m nervous for a few reasons – a) I always get nervous running in a group because I am a slower runner. B) I took a 60 minute cardio class this morning (my fault, I know). C) The last night I ran at night, it was a disaster. D) I have never driven by myself to Chicago and I have no idea how to park in the city.

The last reason might seem ridiculous, but I worry about things like that. I hate driving in general, so driving to Chicago alone is my biggest nightmares. And I don’t know anything about city parking.

I am looking forward to meeting everyone though!

I also received my Zooma half marathon training plan. The 15k training plan I am currently following is simply running three days a week, while the half marathon training plan includes things like strides and tempo runs. That will be something different for me, but something that I hope will improve my running.

UntitledHave a great afternoon!

  • Do you like seafood? Favorite seafood?
  • Do you ever run in a group?
  • What kinds of things do you not like to do or what makes you nervous?
  • Do you incorporate tempo run, strides, etc. into your runs?

Running, Eating, and Playing

First of all, thank you for all the positive comments about the Mizuno Mezamashii Project video. I really appreciate all the support!

For the next four weeks, my brother has a new schedule at work. This means instead of picking up my niece at 12:30 pm, he will be dropping her off at 7:30 am.

Since she will be here in the mornings and all day, my workouts and 15k training will have to change a bit.

The part I am most nervous about is the 15k training. I have been really good about sticking to the plan and running three days a week, including a long run on the weekend. I also have a 5k the next three weekends in a row, so that throws things off too.

I think I figured out a plan – I will run one night a week after Danny gets home from work, wake up at 5:30 am one morning a week to run before Danny goes to work, and then continuing doing my long run on the weekend.

This Sunday, I’m running a Mother’s Day 5k with my family, so I am going to try and fit in my long run on Friday morning – that way my legs will hopefully be rested for Sunday. Even though my long run is only 6 miles (I’m building up endurance) my calves still get very tight and sore.

Last year’s Mother’s Day 5k:

The only day I’m really worried about is the night runs. I have never really ran in the evening, so it’ll probably take some getting used to, but you gotta do what you gotta do!

Although, I haven’t weighed myself lately, I know that I have gained a few pounds. I am slowly falling back into my old eating habits of eating what I want, when I want. This is what caused me to gain weight in the first place, and I refuse to gain back all the weight that I lost.

For example, yesterday I got into a run-in with a box of teddy grahams. The teddy grahams won.

This is why I liked competing in the Diet Bets because they made me feel like I was being held accountable to someone other than myself. So, starting today, I will be writing down everything I eat, stick to healthy foods, and stay within 1500 calories a day. I am more focused on eating healthy and feeling good than I am a number on the scale.

Jaden has officially started t-ball!

That means lots of t-ball practices, games, and fun!

Today’s Workout

  • Butts and Guts Class – 60 minutes

I have a pretty bad cold so my workouts haven’t been very intense these last few days. Hopefully, I’ll start to feel better soon!

After my workout, I had a Chobani caramel pineapple yogurt. These need to come in a bigger size – they’re so good!

Have a great afternoon!

  • When do you run? Morning, night, afternoon? Any advice for running in the evening?
  • Any races coming up?
  • Favorite yogurt flavor?
  • Any plans for today?

Strawberry Orange Yogurt Smoothie

Good afternoon!

First up, the winners of the QuestBar giveaway.

#29 – Julie P.

#73 – Jessie

Congrats! Please email your shipping address to runeatplay(at)hotmail(dot)com!

Today’s Workout

  • Elliptical – 15 minutes
  • Butts and Guts Class – 60 minutes

Today for lunch, I had a smoothie. I know that I have been sharing lots of smoothie recipes lately, but I have to share one more because today’s smoothie was so good!

I found this Dannon Oikos orange cream Greek yogurt at the grocery store and knew that it would be perfect in a smoothie!

Strawberry Orange Smoothie

  • 1 container orange cream Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 6 oz. Trop50 orange juice
  • 2 oz. unsweetened almond milk
  • crushed ice

Usually I use protein powders in my smoothies but the Greek yogurt adds enough protein for this smoothie. I topped it with some Special K cereal for a bit of crunch!

Have a great afternoon!

  • Random Question: Favorite ab exercise?
  • Greek yogurt, regular yogurt, or no yogurt?
  • What did you have for lunch today? What’s for dinner?

Asthma Sucks

Last night at dinner I played an April Fool’s Day trick on the kids. I gave them their drinks but it was actually jello in a cup with a straw so they couldn’t drink it!

Hey, it’s funny to a six-year old…and I thought it was pretty clever. 🙂

The kids loved it.

For dinner, I made a similar salad to the one I had last week when I met Danny for lunch. My salad had spring mix, pears, walnuts, cranberries, cucumbers, and feta.

I topped it with Ken’s Sweet Vidalia Onion dressing. Marlene had this dressing when we celebrated my grandpa’s birthday a couple of weeks ago, and it was really good so I bought a bottle.

I also bought a package of cranberries and glazed walnuts which is what gave me the idea for the salad.

The glazed walnuts were the best part.

Today’s breakfast was something different from my usual Kashi Go Lean cereal. I usually stick to cereal in the mornings because it’s quick and easy during the busy morning, but sometimes it’s nice to have something different.

This morning I had a Van’s blueberry waffle topped with PB2 and blueberries. I also had two egg whites, coffee, and a glass of detox water.

Today’s Workout

  • Plank #31 – 3 minutes and 28 seconds!
  • 1 mile treadmill, walked
  • Butts and Guts – 60 minutes
  • Elliptical – 12 minutes
  • Stretching – 5 minutes

This morning, I had to make an asthma and allergy appointment for Jaden because his allergies have been acting up and he has been wheezy. Luckily, they were about to get him in at 11:15 am, so I told his school that I’d pick him up at 10:45 am.

I still had time to kill after Butts and Guts class (Jaden’s school is two minutes from the gym, so there’s no point in going home first) so I just did the elliptical for a short time, followed by some much-needed calf stretching.

Jaden’s doctor appointment took forever. Our appointment was at 11:15 am and by the time we even saw the doctor it was 12 pm. Then I was in a big rush to get Jaden back to school in time for lunch and pick up my niece.

Jaden left the doctor’s office with four prescriptions including a steroid, a breathing treatment, and an inhaler. I feel so bad that my poor little guys has to go through all this. He’s already on daily asthma and allergy medicine and gets allergy shots once every three weeks. Poor guy.

I’m finally home now and can eat lunch!

Have a great afternoon!

My blog will be down for few days sometime within the next week. I am in the process of switching over to a self-hosted site. Apparently, my love for taking pictures is making the process a little bit longer than originally planned 🙂 But don’t worry, you can’t get rid of me that easily – once everything is switched over, things will be back to normal.

You can follow me on Facebook and Instagram (@RunEatPlay). I’m sure I’ll be posting a lot there!

  • What’s your quick go-to breakfast?
  • Do you (or your kids) have asthma or allergies?
  • Favorite salad topping?

Biggest Loser Finale

Biggest Loser

Did you guys watch the Biggest Loser finale last night? I didn’t even recognize Danni! She looked awesome, and of course, I had to root for her because she’s from the Chicago suburbs – not too far from me actually. What a transformation that girl had!

I also really liked Joe and thought all the contestants looked awesome. I was hoping Lisa would win the at home prize. That girl looked great!!

I loved the kid’s transformations. I think they really made themselves healthier and gained tons of self-confidence. They also helped change their families lives.

I just wished they didn’t end the show so abruptly – maybe let Danni or the trainers talk for a minute? It’s just confetti. The End.

Today’s Workout

  • Plank #19 – 3 minutes and 4 seconds
  • 1.04 miles treadmill, walked
  • Butts and Guts Class – 60 minutes

Only 12 more planks left in March to go! We used the Bosu ball in Butts and Guts today, and we did some plank work on it at the end of class, so I got a lot of plank time in today!

Right from the gym, I went to the dentist for a check-up and teeth cleaning. All good! I hate when they floss my teeth, though. It drives me crazy. I am 30 years old. I think I can floss my own teeth.

After the dentist, I picked up my niece, and we stopped at Target where I picked up the BEST Easter candy ever:

I love love love Cadbury eggs. But don’t worry – I’m not going to eat all of them (although I would love to 🙂 ). I found a recipe for Cadbury Egg Blondies on Pinterest that I am going to make for Easter. I hope that turn out good because that’s pretty much my dream dessert!

Lunch this afternoon was one that you’ve seen a lot.

Peanut butter stuffed French toast made with PB2, two egg whites, and Honeycrisp apple slices dipped in PB2.

Tomorrow is the first day of spring! How are you going to celebrate?!

I’m going to celebrate by wearing shorts. Just kidding. I’ll be wearing pants, a hoodie, a coat, and gloves because it’s going to be 25 degrees here tomorrow. Thanks first day of spring.

  • Did you watch the Biggest Loser Finale? Who did you want to win?
  • What’s your dream dessert?
  • What’s the last thing you bought at Target?
