Under The Weather

Good afternoon!

Thank you so much for all the encouraging words about my BodyPump certification. I really appreciate all your support!

I feel like¬†I have finally found something in life that I love doing as a career. I love fitness and although teaching and training make me really nervous sometimes, it’s something that I really enjoy doing. I feel like it helps other people feel good about themselves and improves their wellbeing which makes me happy.

Everyone has to start somewhere, and I feel like I can only improve as time goes on. So thank you for all your kind words!

Today’s Workout

  • BodyPump – 60 minutes

There is a cold going around my house. The kids had it first and it quickly made its way to me so now I am feeling a little bit under the weather. Is anyone else sick around the holidays every single year?!

I debated running this morning but woke up really feeling the cold in my chest and I didn’t think running would be the best idea.

Do I say that all the time?! I debated running…but then I didn’t. I really need to get my butt running more. I did run two miles at the gym on Saturday after I completed a full body workout so that’s something :)

I took BodyPump instead and the nice thing about BodyPump is that you can adjust the weights to your level of fitness and since I wasn’t feeling the best, I just went a little lighter than normal and I still felt good about getting a workout in!

There’s no school this week, so Jaden went to the kid’s room at the gym.

He gets more marker on his hands and face then he does on the paper.

Breakfast this morning was Kashi oatmeal topped with peanut butter.

I buy crunchy peanut butter every once in awhile and every time I do, I remember that I don’t like it. I should stop buying it.

It seems like Thanksgiving is a bit late this year and Jaden has been dying to put out Christmas stuff. He’s just like me – he loves Christmas. So, we got out a few boxes of Christmas decorations and started putting some up around the house.

PicMonkey Collage

We won’t put our tree up until December so it’s nice to have some other decorations around the house. We always go as a family to cut down a Christmas tree in the beginning of December.

Have a great afternoon!

  • What are you plans for the week?
  • Have you started decorating for the holidays yet?
  • Real tree or fake tree?

I Passed and a Grain Brain Review

I passed my final BodyPump certification!!

I am so happy! After months of practicing, going to training, more practicing, teaching with an instructor, and even more practicing, I finally passed! I am now a certified BodyPump instructor!

I still have to talk to my gym, but I think the plan for now is to teach every other Sunday and sub for other instructors. It won’t be a lot of hours, but I’m happy that I passed and can officially teach now. Yay! :)

Grain Brain Challenge

Thank you to FitFluential on behalf of Grain Brain for letting me be part of this challenge. I was compensated for my time and participation. All opinions are my own.

About a month ago, I started a grain brain challenge based on the book, Grain Brain, by Dr. Perlmutter. His book explains the negative effect carbs and grains have on our brains and bodies and proposes a four-week plan of taking vitamins, eating low carb and gluten-free, and getting the recommended amount of sleep.

My Thoughts

I did as best as I could during this challenge, but I have to admit that I wasn’t perfect. Eating low carb and gluten-free can be tough and require a lot of planning, but once you do it for awhile, it gets easier. Meal planning also helps a ton.

For me, I tried to stick to more of a gluten-free diet.

I ate tons of eggs, salads, fish, yogurt, fruits, and veggies.

I also ate some packaged gluten-free foods.

I think packaged gluten-free foods should be used in moderation because they are still processed foods and aren’t necessarily good for you, but when you’re hungry and need something fast, they are great!

I ate gluten-free Amy’s burritos.

And Udi’s gluten-free bread.

For a quick snack, I grabbed a Larabar or a Kind bar.

I also was able to get creative and come up with some great gluten-free recipes including gluten-free pancakes and gluten-free muffins.

Eating gluten-free and low carb food can be really benefcial, it’s just about finding foods and recipes that you enjoy. Or taking your favorite recipe and making it healthier.

Like I said, I didn’t do perfect and sometimes I messed up on the weekends, and I can tell what a difference I felt when I ate bad on the weekends. Okay, not necessarily bad (I don’t think foods should be labeled good or bad) but rather when I fell off the gluten-free wagon.

When I was eating gluten-free and lower carb, I felt better – physically and mentally. It might sound weird, but I felt lighter. I felt a lot less bloated and that made me feel awesome. When I went a little overboard on the weekend, I felt sluggish and bloated.

I think eating gluten-free and reducing carbs in the evenings can really help you feel better and aid in weight loss.

I am glad that I participated in the grain brain challenge and felt that I really learned a lot about my body but at the same time it was very hard to eat perfect all the time. Although, I think after this challenge, I will stick to eating  a lot of gluten-free foods. They just made me feel better.

A lot of people have gluten intolerances and may not even realize it. A gluten-free diet is great to try just to see the positive effects that it can have on your body.

Well, I am off to the gym with Danny and the kids this morning! Have a great Saturday!

Don’t forget to enter the My Race Ragz giveaway¬†- ends Sunday!

Teaching BodyPump

Happy Friday!!

I am feeling pretty Christmas-y today! The radio just started playing Christmas music 24/7 and I love it! Danny thinks its too early for Christmas music, but not me РChristmas music makes me happy :)

I also had a gingerbread latte from Starbucks this afternoon.

So good. If Christmas music and holiday lattes don’t put you in the Christmas mood then I don’t know what does!

Last night, I was reunited with my niece after not seeing her for a week!

I missed her so much. I’m glad that she had so much fun at Disney, but I’m glad that she’s home.

Today’s Workout

  • Taught BodyPump – 60 minutes

I taught Bodypump on my own for the first time this morning. I was so nervous. I hardly slept last night because I kept having dreams about all the stuff that could go wrong. I had never used the sound system before, so I was a little nervous about getting it up and running.

Luckily, everything went smoothly. I got the sound system to work and I taught my first BodyPump class. I had never taught the triceps, biceps, and core tracks before so I was a little nervous about those.

I wasn’t perfect but I wasn’t horrible either. I knew all the moves and chorography, just my timing was a bit off a few times. But I figure that I can only improve from here!

I burned just under 700 calories teaching. I definitely burn more calories teaching the class than just taking the class!

After BodyPump, I had about an hour and a half to kill until I met with a client. I did a couple of errands and then headed back to the gym.

Tonight, we’re going out to dinner to celebrate my sister-in-law’s 3oth birthday!

Have a great afternoon!

  • Do you think it’s too early for Christmas music?
  • Do you have any plans this weekend?

Walk Breaks

I was going through the books on my bookshelf yesterday looking for something to read and I came across my Jeff Galloway Half Marathon Training book that I bought years ago.

I bought this book years ago before I even started blogging. I guess I have always had a desire to run a half marathon, it’s just that my body doesn’t like being cooperative.

Galloway’s method is to incorporate scheduled walk breaks into your running – including during the actual race. The ratio is depends on your speed – so, for example, you run¬†ten minutes and then walk one minute.

I personally have mixed feelings on walk breaks. Of course, I do take walk breaks while running especially when my hip/glute start bothering me. I take them when I need to, not exactly scheduled.

But here’s the thing with me and walk breaks – I might be running for awhile and then take a short walk break. I’ll start running again and get tired. Then I’ll think well, I’ve already taken one walk break, I might as well take another.

Then I’ll start thinking, well, I’ve already messed up my running with a few walk breaks, I might as well take a longer break. And before you know it, I am taking too many walk breaks.

For me, it’s better to not even take the walk breaks in the first place – my mind gives up before my body does. It’s all mental. I feel like I need to walk even though I’d be fine if I kept running. Running has always been hard for me and something that I struggle with, so sometimes I’m ready to throw the towel in early.

I have to get through that mental place that tells me to walk and just keep running. But like I said, I think walk breaks are great and really can work for some people. For me, they just give me an excuse to keep walking.

The longest race I have ever run was a 15k – 9.3 miles. I wasn’t particularly fast, but I was so proud of myself because I didn’t take one single walk break. I had never done¬†that in training and was happy that I was able to run the whole thing. That’s a pretty good accomplishment for me because running is hard on my body and¬†I usually have some kind of pain or injury.

I didn’t even walk through the water stations because that would give me an excuse to add more walk breaks.

I know that some people can run far distances without walking or even¬†maintain a¬†fast speed and be fine, but I can’t. I have definitely improved my running over the last couple of years, but I will never¬†be fast.¬†And honestly, I don’t think that’s what truly important. For me, it’s more about getting off the couch, being active, having fun, running races with my family, and enjoying it.

Of course, I would love to be faster (who wouldn’t!) but I have accepted that I am doing what my body lets me do!

Wow! That was a lot more thoughts and feeling than I planned on typing :)

Today’s Workout

  • 5 miles treadmill
  • Stretching

This morning, I ran five miles on the treadmill. I ran three and then had to add in a few walk breaks for the last two miles.

However, they weren’t walk breaks because I was mentally giving up, they were walk breaks because I haven’t ran five miles in quite a while and my hip was hurting and I knew I needed a little break.

After I finished five miles, I made sure to stretch my hips and glutes.

Between running and stretching, I burned over 700 calories.

Tomorrow morning, I am teaching my first BodyPump class. I am nervous beyond belief because it was last minute and totally unexpected. The normal BodyPump instructor hurt her back and I am the only one available to teach the class.

So, I will be teaching completely alone and I don’t even know how to work the CD player and mic. Should be fun times. Wish me luck.

Have a great afternoon!!

Cardio Fusion Class

Good afternoon!

Last Night’s Workout

  • BodyPump – 60 minutes

I didn’t workout yesterday morning, so I decided to take the evening BodyPump class instead. It’s always so different taking a class at night. In the mornings, we know each other and have certain ways of doing things whereas at night, they have their own group and way of doing things.

It’s nice to go workout in the evening once in awhile but I prefer the mornings.

Breakfast this morning was the gluten free Puffins cereal.

It was good, but the peanut butter puffins are way better.

Today’s Workout

  • Cardio Fusion Class – 60 minutes

Since I went to BodyPump last night, I decided to try out a new class at the gym this morning – Cardio Fusion. The first 30 minutes of the class were pretty much Zumba, then we did about 20 minutes of abs, and about 5 minutes of kickboxing moves.

It was a really fun class that I would take again.

Post workout, I had a Pure Protein shake.

By the time lunch rolled around today, I was hungry. I made an egg and cheese sandwich on Udi’s bread.

I also had a coconut pineapple sparkling water. Normally, I am not a fan of coconut, but this sparkling water flavor is the best one I’ve tried!

My brother, sister-in-law, and niece come home from Florida tonight! I invited everyone over to dinner at our house tomorrow night, so we can visit and hear all about their trip and half marathon. Okay, okay. I really invited them over so I could squeeze and hug my niece and ask her how much she missed me!

Have a wonderful  afternoon!

Almond Flour Chocolate Chip Cookies

Good afternoon!

Today’s Workout

  • Practiced BodyPump

Well, I am back to practicing BodyPump! When I filmed my video, I didn’t need to include the triceps, biceps, or core tracks which means I spent little time practicing those tracks. Now, I am working on learning those for when I am able to teach my own class. Those triceps push-ups are killer!

After I finished practicing, my brother dropped my niece off before he went to work.

Tomorrow, my brother, sister-in-law, and niece are going to Florida for a week. My sister-in-law, Crystal, is running the Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon (I’m jealous!) The awesome part is that not only will this be her first half marathon, but she’ll be running it on her 30th birthday. And since the race is at night, she will actually turn 30 while running the race!

How cool is that?! I bet many people can’t say that!! Good luck, Crystal! You will do awesome and when you come home, you’ll be part of the 30′s club :)

This will be the longest amount of time that I have ever been away from my niece since she has been born.¬†It’ll be hard for me because I love her to pieces,¬†but I know she’ll have lots of fun at Disney World – she calls it Mickey’s house.

Since my niece was over early today, I decided to put her to work.

She helped me bake some almond flour cookies.

Almond Flour Chocolate Chip Cookies  Makes approx. 8 cookies

This cookies may not look like your typical cookie, but trust me – they taste delicious. Also, since I am the only one that will be eating them, I made a very small batch.

  • 1 cup almond flour
  • 1/4 tsp. sea salt
  • 1/8 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/8 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp. honey
  • 1/2 tbsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together almond flour, sea salt, baking soda, and baking powder.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat egg and cream in butter. Using a hand mixer, add in honey and vanilla extract.
  4. Slowly mix in dry ingredients. Mix until combined.
  5. Bake approx. 10-12 minutes. Cool and enjoy!

Of course, I had to eat¬†a cookie¬†right away and it was delicious! The texture isn’t exactly like a regular chocolate chip cookie. They have more of a cake-like texture, which is A-OK in my book :)

Have a great afternoon!

  • What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever done for your birthday?
  • Ever run a race on your birthday?

Zucchini Pizza Boats

Good morning!

Yesterday’s Workout

  • 30 minute HIIT treadmill workout

Yesterday morning, Danny, Jacob, and I went to the gym. We only had about 30 minutes to workout so I did¬†a hiit workout on the treadmill -¬†two minutes of fast running, followed by two minutes of walking for 30 minutes. If you’re short on time, hiit workouts are great because they get your heart rate up and burn calories.

And I was able to get a couple of miles in for Pile on the Miles. :)

My Mizunos – which haven’t¬†been getting enough¬†love lately!

I ran on the treadmill while watching the NYC marathon on tv. If you need motivation while running, just watch those elite runners – they are awesome! Just watching them made me run a little faster.

Today’s Workout

  • BodyPump – 60 minutes

For lunch this afternoon, I made zucchini pizza boats. They are pretty much the same thing as the zucchini pizza bites only sliced different.

I cut the ends off of a zucchini and cut it in half lengthwise.

I sprinkle it with garlic and wine seasoning and cook it in the oven at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. Then, I top it with pizza sauce and cheese and cook it for about 5-7 minutes more until the cheese melts. It’s sooo good.

I have been also looking for away to satisfy my sweet tooth without eating too much sugar. I found these Justin’s peanut butter cups at Whole Foods.

I’ve heard tons of good things about them, so I bought them to try out. They are delicious! Better yet, they’re low carb, low sugar, and gluten free. Don’t worry – they taste awesome!¬†I have to hide the bag so I don’t eat them all at once!

Don’t forget to check me out on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook!

Have a great afternoon!

Haunted Hay Ride

Good Morning! Happy Saturday – can you believe this is the last weekend of October?!

Yesterday morning, I taught part of the BodyPump class at my gym. It was the first time not using my notes during a regular class, and I thought it was my best job yet!

I didn’t use any weights during the lunge track because when I do, my right leg hurts for a week. Since I am filming my video tomorrow, I figured I’d save my leg and use weights during the video.

Yesterday night, Danny, the kids, and I met my dad at the pumpkin farm to go on a haunted hay ride.

My dad and Danny always find it necessary to “fly” at this part of the pumpkin farm.

Jaden, who is pretty much scared of his own shadow and refuses to go to the bathroom alone in broad daylight, loved the haunted hay ride. It baffles me. He’s scared¬†of being alone in the bathroom but he loved the crazy guy with a chainsaw. Whatever.

After the hay ride, we hung around a bit and had some hot chocolate and then headed home.

Tonight is the Halloween party! I am so excited to see everyone’s costumes!

I woke up early this morning, and the kids and I watched It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown while I finished up my Halloween costume.

My brother and sister-in-law got me this DVD three-pack last year for Christmas because I love the Charlie Brown holiday movies.

I finally got my costume totally finished, now I just have to try it all on together to see how it looks.

I spent the rest of the morning baking Reese’s Piece’s peanut butter cookies.

These are the same cookies that I made for Labor Day. I used¬†this recipe. These cookies are delicious – probably the best peanut butter cookie that I’ve ever had! Not the healthiest, but the most delicious :)

I also have to go to Whole Foods today or tomorrow. I am starting my Grain Brain Challenge on Monday and it will end November, 25 Рso exactly four weeks. I made a grocery list and now I just need to get to the store!

Have a great day!

Halloween Scavenger Hunt

Last night, we had a family gym night. Well, except for Jaden. He went to the kid’s room.

Jacob has really gotten into running lately, so I have been trying to encourage his interest. He signed up for a fitness club at school and wants to go to the gym to run on the treadmill.

I kind of hung out with Jacob on the treadmill. I didn’t get in¬†a great workout because we had just finished eating dinner and my quad was bothering me.

I ran a mile with Jacob on the treadmill. I did a few random ab exercises and stretches, and then I raced Danny 1.5 miles on the stationary bikes. The bikes are neat because you can race the person next to you. All I really accomplished at the gym was making my quad feel worse.

When we got home, I ate about half the box of the peanut butter Puffins – my new favorite cereal! So good!

This morning I practiced BodyPump for about 40 minutes at home. I have all the moves memorized, but now I realize that I have to practice with heavier weights, so I can lift and talk at the same time.

I love BodyPump, but I will be so incredibly happy and relieved once this video has been submitted. I feel like BodyPump has taken over my life!

Halloween Scavenger Hunt

I forgot to tell you how my Halloween Scavenger Hunt went on Friday night! It was really fun and hopefully everyone had a good time.

I split everyone into three teams and each team was given a list of items to find or collect and things that they had to take a picture of and send to me.

Each item/picture was worth a certain amount of points and at the end all the points were added up and the team with the most points won!

Some of the items on the list included:

  • Bringing back my favorite candy – (Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup – only one team got this right)
  • Wrapping a stranger up like a mummy 2013-10-189519.21.20
  • A picture of a black cat crossing your path 2013101895195148
  • A picture of a house with tombstones in the front yard 2013101895202352
  • Bringing back the thing that jack o lanterns were first carved out of (turnips)
  • A picture of a team member in a Halloween costume IMG_3121
  • Going to the pet cemetery and getting the black rose
  • A picture of a team member chasing someone around the store with a pretend chainsaw 2013-10-189519.28.26
  • A picture of a Christmas display IMG952166

There was a lot of items on the list and I think the game went really good and everyone had fun!

When everyone was gone collecting their items, Jaden and my niece had fun finding Halloween eggs in the backyard.

I thought it was kind of weird to have Halloween eggs with candy in them (isn’t that pretty much Easter?!) but Jaden saw them at the store and I figured they keep the kids busy for a while.

When everyone came back, I added up the points and the winning team got a small prize!

This weekend will be busy with Halloween fun too – on Friday we’re going to the pumpkin farm and haunted hay ride and Saturday is the Halloween party! I really need to finish my costume!

Have a great afternoon!

Video Fail

Good afternoon!

Yesterday, I recorded my BodyPump video and it didn’t turn out as planned. The camera stopped recording after 13 minutes and no one realized it! Not fun.

I brought my own digital camera because I had a new 6 hour HD video memory card, but the instructor also brought the gym’s video camera. I tried putting my memory card in the gym’s camera but it said that it wasn’t compatible. So, I just used my own camera. Well, that was a mistake because it stopped recording.

I guess it’s for the best anyway because I made a few mistakes and it would probably be better to record again. Next time, I’ll use the gym’s camera and just bring the memory card home to upload on my computer.

It was so hard teaching! It’s so different from practing at home with a 9 lb bar to using the regular weights at the gym. And my right quad and hip hurt so bad during the lunge track.

So needless to say, I will be practicing again all week and filming on Sunday.

My new Asics came in the mail on Friday (yay for free two-day shipping!) and I love them!

I also picked up these cute flats from Target over the weekend.

They are so cute, it was hard to resist. (I wear a size 11 in gym shoes and a size 10 in regular shoes.)

I rarely wear heels because I’m already tall as it but also because I am really awkward in heels, so I just stick to flats.

Except, I always buy cheap flats that end up hurting my feet after¬†I wear them a few times.¬†Danny pointed out that with all the money I have spent on cheap flats, I could have bought a nice pair that wouldn’t hurt my feet. Hopefully these won’t hurt my feet because I love them!

I worked at the gym for a little while this morning, then I stopped at the grocery store. I randomly picked up a box of peanut butter Puffins.

I have never bought the Puffins cereal before but I have heard a lot of good things about it so I decided today would be the day to try it out. And anything with peanut butter must be delicious, right?

This afternoon I’ll be working on my Halloween costume for the party this weekend. Most of my costume is store bought but there is a couple of parts to it that I am making.

Halloween costumes make me think of Halloween candy. What’s your favorite Halloween candy?

I love Reese’s Peanut Butter cups and Snickers. Lucky for me, Jacob is allergic to nuts so I get to eat all his peanut butter candy. I could share with Jaden and Danny, but I don’t. Okay, okay maybe I do a little.

I also like the non-chocolate candy like Skittles and Starbursts. As much as I am going to try and stay away from the Halloween candy this year, I am sure a few piece will find their way into my mouth :) What’s Halloween without a little candy?!

Have a wonderful afternoon!

  • Favorite Halloween candy?
  • Ladies: flats or heels?
  • Are you dressing up for Halloween this year?
