Weekend Recap

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.

On Saturday afternoon we went to my stepbrother, Jake’s, graduation party.

My dad and stepmom made him a scrapbook of his life from when he was born until now. My dad also made my brother and me a scrapbook when we graduated high school.

We had fun visiting, eating, and swimming.

I think Jaden stayed in the pool for four straight hours. That kids loves to swim. He didn’t even mater how cold he got or how much his teeth were chattering, he did not want to get out of that pool.

We stayed to watch the Chicago Blackhawks game. Thank goodness they won :)

On Sunday, we just kind of relaxed and hung out all day. I was expecting my legs to be sore from my 8 mile run on Saturday morning, but they felt totally fine.

We worked on the little garden in our front yard a little bit.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a green thumb. My mom does so it must have skipped my generation. I pretty much kill every plant that I touch, with the¬†exception of those two big green plants. We planted those few years ago, and they come back and grow big every year without me doing anything. Those are the kind of plants that I like.

In hindsight, I should have bought bigger plants than those little purple flowers, but for some reason I was imaging the space smaller in my head. We’ll see how long they live with me around.

Today’s Workout

  • BodyPump – 60 minutes

I went to BodyPump this morning, then came home and made a fruit smoothie.

My smoothies have been so simple lately – frozen strawberries and peaches, peach Greek yogurt, and some Trop50 orange juice. Easy and delicious.

The Biggest Loser 15k in coming up on Saturday. I am excited but nervous. My training plan has a few short runs this week – 2 miles and 3 miles. Then the big 9.3 miles on Saturday. I plan just to go slow and steady. I don’t have a time goal in mind.

I am debating whether or not I should bring my hand held water bottle with me. I run better without holding it, but it’s supposed to be hot on Saturday, so I figure I might need it.

Have a great afternoon!

  • Do you have a green thumb? Do you like to garden?
  • Do you bring a water bottle with you for long races or just use the water stations?
  • Do you like to swim?

Rain Day

I finally made a Weight Loss page! Don’t forget to check it out!

My phone started ringing at the wonderful hour of 5 am this morning. It turns out that it was the school district calling to say that school was canceled because of flooding. It has been raining a lot here in Chicagoland, and we have been getting a lot of flooding.

Jacob, Jaden, and I ended up sleeping until 8:30 am. When I woke up, I ran around and started yelling, we’re late for school, we’re late for school! I thought it was pretty fun, but apparently Jacob didn’t find me quite as funny as I found myself.

He popped his head out of bed and said, Daddy already told me that school was canceled. Oh.

And Jaden can’t even tell time, so that was a wash.

Flooding can’t keep me away from the gym though, and by some miracle we made it out of the house by 9 am.

Today’s Workout

  • Step and Tone Class – 60 minutes

I debated running today, but after yesterday’s run, I thought it would be better to hold off on running until Saturday or Sunday. I have a four mile run that I need to get in this weekend.

I just found out that in May, my gym is getting rid of Step class and turning into a Trifecta Class (20 min. cardio, 20 min. strength, 20 min core). I am not terribly upset because Step class is one of those classes that I can take it or  leave it. I think the new Trifecta class will be pretty good though.

I didn’t eat breakfast before the gym this morning because we woke up so late, so I ate when I got home from working out.

Bagel thin with egg whites, provolone cheese, and strawberry preserves <—- The best combo. I also had a clementine.

Biggest Loser Finale

Biggest Loser

Did you guys watch the Biggest Loser finale last night? I didn’t even recognize Danni! She looked awesome, and of course, I had to root for her because she’s from the Chicago suburbs – not too far from me actually. What a transformation that girl had!

I also really liked Joe and thought all the contestants looked awesome. I was hoping Lisa would win the at home prize. That girl looked great!!

I loved the kid’s transformations. I think they really made themselves healthier and gained tons of self-confidence. They also helped change their families lives.

I just wished they didn’t end the show so abruptly – maybe let Danni or the trainers talk for a minute? It’s just confetti. The End.

Today’s Workout

  • Plank #19 – 3 minutes and 4 seconds
  • 1.04 miles treadmill, walked
  • Butts and Guts Class – 60 minutes

Only 12 more planks left in March to go! We used the Bosu ball in Butts and Guts today, and we did some plank work on it at the end of class, so I got a lot of plank time in today!

Right from the gym, I went to the dentist for a check-up and teeth cleaning. All good! I hate when they floss my teeth, though. It drives me crazy. I am 30 years old. I think I can floss my own teeth.

After the dentist, I picked up my niece, and we stopped at Target where I picked up the BEST Easter candy ever:

I love love¬†love Cadbury eggs. But don’t worry – I’m not going to eat all of them (although I would love to :) ). I found a recipe for Cadbury Egg Blondies on Pinterest that I am going to make for Easter. I hope that turn out good because that’s pretty much my dream dessert!

Lunch this afternoon was one that you’ve seen a lot.

Peanut butter stuffed French toast made with PB2, two egg whites, and Honeycrisp apple slices dipped in PB2.

Tomorrow is the first day of spring! How are you going to celebrate?!

I’m going to celebrate by wearing shorts. Just kidding. I’ll be wearing pants, a hoodie, a coat, and gloves because it’s going to be 25 degrees here tomorrow. Thanks first day of spring.

  • Did you watch the Biggest Loser Finale? Who did you want to win?
  • What’s your dream dessert?
  • What’s the last thing you bought at Target?

I Workout and Eat…Story of my Life

Last Night’s Workout

  • Cardio Fit and Tone Class – 60 minutes
  • Elliptical – 10 minutes

I went to the cardio fit and tone class at 6:20 pm last night, so I had a bowl of Kashi cereal about 4 pm, then I had a clementine and 5 pistachios at 6 pm, and I had a smoothie with a little bit of Special K when I got home about 8 pm.

I usually try not to eat dinner so late, but my eating always gets messed up when I go to the gym around 6pm.

In my smoothie:

  • 1 1/2 cup strawberries
  • 1/2 cup peaches
  • 1 container plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 scoop protein powder
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • crushed ice

Today’s Breakfast

This morning, I had peanut butter toast, blueberries, and hazelnut coffee.

Coffee cup courtesy of my mom.

Today’s Workout

  • 1.15 miles treadmill, walked
  • Butts and Guts Class – 60 minutes
  • Stretching – 15 minutes

My right quad (it’s always my right side!) has been really sore lately, so this morning I pulled out the neglected massage stick and used it on my leg.

I think part of the problem is that I haven’t been stretching lately. I don’t stretch as often as I should, and I know that’s a problem. Today after Butts and Guts class, I stretched for 15 minutes, and I was so glad that I did afterwards. I really need to start stretching more.

After my workout, I had a Greek yogurt and a mini package of pistachios.

Each package has about six pistachios and is only 20 calories. A package or two is good for when I am craving something salty/crunchy. I usually crave sweets more than I do salty foods though.

I picked up my niece and the stopped at the grocery store to pick up a few veggies. When I got home I made a veggie and feta omelet for lunch. I also had veggies and hummus, strawberries, and a caramel pineapple Greek yogurt.

Biggest Loser

Are you watching the Biggest Loser? I was glad to see that yesterday’s episode discussed nutrition a little bit more. I like watching the Biggest Loser, but sometimes I get bored with just watching them workout all the time. I would love to know how many calories they eat, what they eat, when they eat, etc.

I think that diet is just as important as exercise if you’re trying to be healthy or lose weight, and I wished they showed more of that on the show.

I was also surprised to see that the kids on the show are also wearing the BodyMedia armbands. I thought only the adults were wearing them since they said the kids wouldn’t be weighed. Maybe they’re just wearing them to see how many calories they’re burning a daily basis.

Have a great afternoon!

Questions of the day:

  • Biggest Loser thoughts?
  • Do you stretch? How often?
  • Sweet, salty, or crunchy?
  • Workouts: morning or evening? Or afternoon?

Biggest Loser, BodyMedia, and BodyPump

Today my brother is actually having back surgery. For real this time…hopefully. He had a procedure on Friday at the hospital to prepare for today’s surgery, so he should be all set¬† to go. I feel so bad for him because this whole thing has been¬†nothing but¬†a painful ordeal for weeks. Hopefully after today, he’ll be on the road to recovery.

This afternoon, I am heading to the hospital to see him and bring my niece home with me. Fingers crossed that all goes well!

Biggest Loser

So, did anyone watch the Biggest Loser last night?

I have mixed feelings about it because I felt like it really got off to an unfair start with one of the contestants choosing to go home. I also have mixed feelings about Jillian. She is crazy harsh. I don’t know if I would be able to handle someone yelling at me like that. I like Bob’s approach better – hard but still encouraging.

Then, I figured that Jillian can’t always be like that. The show is probably editing to show her at her worse to make for better television. Of course they’re only going to show clips for her at her worse because that’s how she’s portrayed. But in my opinion, she is a bit too drill¬†sergeant pittbull-like¬†for me. I like Dolvett and Bob better.

I also really like that they have kids on this season’s show. I believe that it’s important to show kids how to eat healthy and be active because often they don’t know or have somebody to show them. I wrote a paper on childhood obesity when I first started college, so I know what a problem it is in the¬†U.S. today.

Kids are so less active than when I was young. We used play outside all day until the street lights came on. Now there’s the television, iPods, iPads, the Wii, Playstation, XBox…the list goes on and on. And that’s just how today’s children live. I don’t think that there’s anything wrong with video games. I just think there needs to be a healthy balance between video games and being active.

It made me so sad to listen to how those kids are often treated by their peers. Kids can be so mean. And I hope The Biggest Loser not only helps them lose weight, but encourages other kids at home to do the same. Being active and healthy can be fun, and that’s what I hope they’re showing these kids.

I just wish the show focused more on nutrition rather than workouts. We know the Biggest Losers workout 6-8 hours a day. I’m more interested in how they go from eating unlimited calories a day to sticking to healthy and nutritious foods. I would like to see more of their diet.

I did just find out that the Biggest Loser contestants are wearing the BodyMedia fit armbands this season. Just like me!

I really like my BodyMedia armband and plan on doing a more in depth review of it soon.

The DietBet¬†challenge starts in a few days, and I know that a few of you have signed up, and I’m so excited. If you’ve signed up, I would love to hear about your progress, your challenges and struggles, and your strengths.

Leave comments on the blog. Leave me posts on facebook. Send me Tweets.¬†Follow me on Instagram¬†(@RunEatPlay) and post pics of your workouts and meals. We can do it together! There’s still time to sign up if you’re thinking about joining.

Today’s Workout

  • 1.5 miles, treadmill
  • BodyPump – 60 minutes

I really pushed myself in BodyPump today by upping my weights. It was hard, but I felt like I accomplished something. Sometimes, I feel like I get stuck in the same workout routine and get bored. I love BodyPump, so lifting slightly heavier weights really helped challenge me.

Immediately after BodyPump, I had a peach Greek yogurt for some protein and to help rebuild my muscles.

I also wanted to say that I am very proud of Danny for getting up at 5am to go to the gym today. I know it’s something that he’s not used to, so I’m glad that he’s making the effort. Bring on the Fantasy Fitness challenge!

Have a great Monday!

Questions of the day:

  • Did you watch the Biggest Loser? Thoughts?
  • Do you ever get bored with your workouts?
  • Any plans or workouts for today?

Pumpkin Pancakes

Yesterday’s Evening Workout

  • 3.3 miles, outside

Last night five of us biggest losers made it out to walk/run together. I’m glad that people are involved and still want to get together to workout! We ended up running about 2.5 miles and walking the last little bit.

I have been running by myself for a few years now and never really thought that I would enjoy running with someone else or a group of people. I was wrong. Running with a buddy is so much better than running alone! I guess I always just thought I was too slow and didn’t want to slow other people down, but running with other people really pushes me harder.

Yes, I still like running alone sometimes, but I look forward to the days when I can run with someone else. I’d run with Danny, but he’d be going at a turtle’s pace if he had to run with me :)

Breakfast this morning was a good one! I’ve been dying for some pumpkin pancakes, but since I am still writing down what I eat and watching my calories, I wanted a pumpkin pancake recipe that wasn’t too high in calories. This morning’s pancakes were flavorful, pumpkiny, and low in calories.

Lower Calorie Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Pancakes    Makes: 2 pancakes

  • 1/3 c. pancake/waffle mix
  • 1/4 c. pumpkin
  • 1/2 tbsp. chocolate chips
  • approx. 1/3 c. water (depending on how thick you like your pancakes)
  • 1 tbsp. lite syrup (optional)

Calories (without syrup): 195 cal.          Calories (with syrup): 220 cal.

The pancake and waffle mix usually calls for an egg and oil, but I substituted with the pumpkin. I also didn’t add too much water because I like my pancakes on the thicker side.

I will definitely be eating these pancakes for a few mornings in a row.

Today’s Workout

  • 2 miles, treadmill
  • Step Class – 60 minutes

After my workout this morning, I treated myself to McDonald’s coffee. Yes, I have my own coffee and coffeemaker at home, but there’s just something about McDonald’s coffee that I love.

In other news, I signed up the Hot Cocoa 5k in October:

I signed up to get that sweet fleece jacket…and to run, of course.

Questions of the day:

  • Do you like pumpkin pancakes?
  • What do you to top your pancakes with?
  • What was the last thing that you treated yourself to?

Fall Fitness 5k and The Biggest Loser Finale

Fall Fitness 5k – complete. Biggest Loser – complete.

I can’t believe the Biggest Loser is over. I feel like these 12 weeks just flew by and I’m really going to miss all the other contestants. It was such a good group.

I woke up at 5 am this morning, and got to the gym about 5:45 am. I was weighed and measured. I didn’t lose any weight (which I expected) but I did lose inches, and my body fat is down to 22%. So, I am happy about that.

From there, we all went to where the race was starting. Danny, the kids, my stepmom, and dad showed up a little while after I got there.

Showing mommy some support:

All the Biggest Loser contestants stretched together and then we were off!

About five of us starting out running together, but by mile two I couldn’t maintain the pace anymore and me and another lady, Tressie, dropped back a little bit. I am so glad that I had Tressie to run with. She put it best when she said, we were feeding off of each other’s positivity. As bad as I wanted to walk, I kept running because Tressie¬†kept running. And as bad as Tressie wanted to walk, she kept running because I kept running.

My average 5k time is between 35 and 36 minutes. This was my time today:

My official time was 31:20. I was soooo happy!  My family was shocked when they saw me start to approach the finish line at 31 minutes. I took almost 4 minutes off my average time! It might not be very fast for you fast runners, but for me, it was awesome!

My shoulder was annoying during the race but not exactly painful. I wore my calf sleeves and luckily my calves weren’t too bad.

Tressie ended up coming in first place for her age group (54-59, I think), and I was so happy for her. Everyone did an awesome job.

Danny ran the race too, and he killed it, finishing in 25 minutes!

My brother, sister-in-law, and niece also came to show support. I love my family, and was glad that everyone could come to see me PR!

After the race, they announced the top three winners for the Biggest Losers, and I was very happy for the winners. They really deserved it. I felt sad leaving because the Biggest Loser is over, but I said that I would still be showing up Wednesday nights, if anyone wanted to continue to work out.

Thank you to my family for showing up and supporting me. Thank you to the Biggest Loser contestants for being such an awesome group of people. Thank you to all the trainers and instructors for pushing me to do my best. And a big thank you to Tressie for running with me all the way to the end.

Oh, and afterwards, I got my pumpkin muffin. :)

Have a wonderful Saturday.

Peanut Butter > Carrot Juice

Happy Friday! Today’s breakfast was so delicious. I had Kashi oatmeal topped with peanut butter and fresh raspberries.

I don’t think I have ever had oatmeal topped with peanut butter before, and I don’t know why it¬†took me so long to try it – it was amazing! I’m pretty sure that peanut butter makes everything better.

After the kids went to school, I went to Mariano’s Fresh Market to get some groceries. I wore my jean jacket.

It makes me feel awesome…and slightly 80′s.

The guy at the juice bar asked me if I wanted to try some carrot juice. Sure, why not?

Carrot juice tastes exactly like a carrot…except in juice form. Go figure. I bought apple cider instead.

After I came home and put the groceries away, I ran out to a local running store to pick up our race packets for tomorrow.

I don’t know if I mentioned it, but Danny is running the 5k also. My dad and stepmom are coming to the race to show support and to watch the kids. I am so lucky to have such a close and supportive family.

Then, I stopped by Target where these little guys found their way into my cart.

I saw them on Suzanne at Fit Minded Mom’s¬†blog a few days ago, and I have been thinking about them ever since. However, I am not going to try them until after my final weigh-in tomorrow. Then I’ll probably eat the whole bag…okay, not really. Hopefully, they’re as delicious as they look.

Lunch today was a salad from the Mariano’s salad bar. I topped mine with veggies, a little fruit, and some crab for a little protein.

I also had a Chobani Champions yogurt.

Tomorrow, I have to meet for our final Biggest Loser weigh-in at 6 am. Then the 5k is at 8 am. My shoulder is still bothering me and the pain actually seems to be starting in my upper back and radiating to my shoulder. I am going to try my hardest at the race tomorrow and do what I can. I’ve never been this nervous for a race! After the race, they will be announcing the Biggest Loser winners. I definitely didn’t win (or planned to) so I am very excited to see who won!

Questions of the day:

  • Have you ever put peanut butter in your oatmeal?
  • Favorite candy?
  • What was your last injury?

Have a great weekend!

You Pick It Giveaway!

Do you want to know something funny? Jaden wears his helmet just to play outside.

He’s not riding his bike or his skateboard. He’s just playing outside with the neighborhood kids. And he wears his helmet.

It reminds me of when I read Drop Dead Healthy by A.J. Jacobs, and he wore a helmet walking around the city in an attempt to be as safe as he possibly could.

But for whatever reason, as soon as he goes outside, Jaden puts on his helmet. Maybe he plans to ride his bike at some point and doesn’t want to come back in for his helmet? I don’t know, but I think it’s funny. At least his head is protected.

Yesterday’s Evening Workout

  • LAST Biggest Loser Workout – 1 hr 45 min

Last night we walked the trail that we will be running for Saturday’s 5k, and we stopped every so often to use resistance tubes and do cardio exercises. Then we ran a mile and compared it to our mile time from the first day of the 5k prep.

Unfortunately, my shoulder is in some serious pain, and as soon as I took one step to run, I got a terrible shooting pain in my shoulder. I couldn’t run. At all. Instead I walked half a mile with a couple of the other ladies who are walking the 5k.

In fact, I couldn’t do half of the exercises that we did last night, and I am feeling very discouraged. This is the worst time to get an injury because I wanted to do really good at the 5k. When I had detached rib cartilage (it’s as painful as it sounds) my doctor told me to use the heating pad first thing in the morning and to ice the injury during the day.

So, I iced my shoulder yesterday, and this morning I used the heating pad and plan to ice it during the day. I also have been taking ibuprofen.

We did end the night with a super fun game! The instructor brought out balloons and told us to tie them to our ankles. As soon as she said this, I knew what we were doing Рreal life Mario Kart!

I made sure to make my enthusiasm known, although some people had no idea what I was talking about and thought I was crazy. There’s a game in Mario Kart where balloons surround the vehicle and you have to drive around trying to pop your opponents balloons.

Well, that’s what we did last night – we all ran around the parking lot with balloons tied to our ankles trying to pop each others. I didn’t last very long and my balloon was popped in the beginning of the game, but I had so much fun!

Today’s Workout

  • 3.1 miles treadmill – 50 minutes
  • 15 minutes stretching

I walked slowly on the treadmill this morning keeping my pace between 3.0 and 4.0 mph. I made sure to strecth really good afterwards.

Look what I saw at the grocery store today- Honeycrisp apples! Only the best apples ever. (Expensive, but totally worth it). Fall has officially arrived!

In other exciting news, I won thePlate Awards 2012 for Healthy Eating Champ of the Year! You can check it out here! And you can check out this article, if you want.

Thank you so much to all of you who voted for me! I really couldn’t have done it without you guys, and I appreciate it so much!

I wanted to show my appreciation by having my own giveaway. I’ve decided that I will pick one winner and give them their choice of a $10 gift card to Whole Foods, Starbucks, or Target (and maybe a couple other surprises!)

Once again, thank you so much! You guys are awesome!

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment letting me know which gift card you would like to win: Whole Foods, Starbucks, or Target.

Giveaway will run though Monday night, and I will announce the winner on Tuesday morning. Don’t forget to check back to see if you’ve won!

Calf Sleeves and Coffee

Yesterday’s Evening Workout

  • Cardio Dance – 45 minutes

I went. I danced. I came home.

This morning started out with some calf sleeves and coffee.

I woke up at about 5 am because my calves were so sore. So, I did what any normal person would do – I played Plants vs. Zombie on my phone until about 6am, and then I rolled out of bed to put my calves sleeve on. Then, I really needed coffee.

Hello, butter toffee coffee. You make my mornings so much better.

Today’s Workout

  • BodyPump

BodyPump pretty much wasn’t fun this morning. At all. Not only are my calves super sore, but my shoulder is hurting a lot. After Danny and I did the Muddy Buddy a couple of months ago, my shoulder starting bothering me a bit. Well, lately it has gotten a lot worse, and today was the worst.

So, during Body Pump, I lifted really light weights and skipped the push-ups. I think my body is telling me that I need to rest, but I have the last Biggest Loser workout tonight. Here’s what my plan is for the next few days:

  • Wednesday – Biggest Loser workout (take it easy!) and 5k prep
  • Thursday – Walk approx. 3 slow miles
  • Friday – Off/Rest
  • Saturday – Fall Fitness 5k (biggest loser finale!)

Hopefully, taking it easy on Thursday and Friday will help me be rested for the race on Saturday.

I made another peach pumpkin oatmeal parfait this morning. So delicious!

Only this time, I topped it with about a tablespoon of granola with almonds. The soft oatmeal and the crunchy granola really gave it a nice texture contrast.

I’ve decided that after the 5k on Saturday there’s only one thing that I want to do – eat¬†a pumpkin muffin and drink coffee. Okay, I guess that’s actually two things.

I never drink coffee before a race, so by the end of the race, I’m wishing that they gave out cups full of coffee rather than water!

Questions of the day:

  • What time do you usually wake up during the week? On the weekends?
  • Do you drink coffee before you run/race?
  • Where can I get the best pumpkin muffin?
