Trying Out the Equipment

Good Morning!

I was up early this morning for an orientation at my new gym this morning.

The gym technically doesn’t open until next month, but all the equipment is up and running. The new gym is going to have fitness floor specialists which walk around the gym floor showing people how to use equipment and answer questions. The orientation today was mainly geared towards them, but the personal trainers were also asked to come to get familiar with the equipment.

It was a pretty informal meeting this morning, and we were all able to roam around the fitness center and try out all the machines, weights, equipment, and cardio machines. I tried not to do too much because of my hip, but I tried out most of the weight machines and cardio equipment.

One of the new pieces of cardio equipment is a low-impact treadmill.

It’s great for people with knee, joint, and low-back and for people recovering from surgery or that are in rehab. It has a trampoline-type deck that cushions your foot as you run. I think it might take a little getting used to if you’re used to a normal treadmill, but I tried it out and I could tell the difference right away.

We spent about an hour and a half working out and trying all the equipment.

As for the personal training, I’ll probably shadow a personal trainer for a while in the beginning and they expect business to pick up towards October. Even though I know all the information from the book, I don’t have any hands-on experience, which I am the most worried about.

It’s different reading and learning information from a book versus actually doing it in real life. I think that shadowing a more experienced trainer will be extremely helpful.

I have a doctor appointment this afternoon to get my hip rechecked. I just wish it wasn’t so far away – it’s about an hour away and I always dread the drive. Driving is something that I really dislike doing. If I never had to drive in life again, I would be perfectly happy. :)

Hopefully the doctor will say that my hip is progressing and I’ll be able to do the BodyPump certification at the beginning of next month.

On Suzanne’s recommendation, I tried the lemon Alt bar, and it was awesome. I usually stick to the peanut butter and chocolate flavors, but I really liked the lemon flavor. I need to stock up on these!

Weight Machine Workout

Yesterday

Last night, Danny and I went to the gym, and we did a few of the weight machines.

Going to the gym:

I prefer free weights to weight machines, and I haven’t done the weight machines in a really long time so it was kind of nice to change things up.

My workout:

  • Ab Machine – 50 lbs, 3 sets, 10 reps
  • Biceps Curl Machine – 30 lbs, 3 sets, 10 reps
  • Triceps Extension – 20 lbs, 3 sets, 12 reps
  • Shoulder Press – 20 lbs, 3 sets, 12 reps
  • Lat Pulldown – 40 lbs, 3 sets, 12 reps
  • Row Machine – 40 lbs, 3 set, 12 reps
  • Rear Delt – 20 lbs, 3 sets, 10 reps
  • Pec Fly 30 lbs, 3 sets, 10 reps

I also tried out a few exercises on the cable machine.

Today

I had physical therapy for an hour this morning. I did a couple new stretches and the PT used the Graston tools on my hip today instead of my quad. I feel like I am definitely progressing but my hip still does have some pain. I’m just glad it’s not a constant pain like it used to be.

This weekend was supposed to be my first half marathon, so I am bummed about not being able to run it. Since we already had a babysitter lined up for the kids, my wonderful husband made dinner reservations for us. So, instead of running 13.1 miles, I’ll be eating a lot of food :)

It’s been hard knowing that I won’t be able to run the half marathon with all the other Zooma Half Marathon Athletes, but my health is my first priority. I also have other things coming up that I can’t be injured for. My dad just keeps telling me that I’m on the DL (disabled list) and not to rush back into things.

I tried out the pumpkin pie Alt bar for a snack today.

I loved the pumpkin flavor – it was subtle and not too overpowering, but I did think the bar was a little dry. It was good but not my fav. The pumpkin flavor reminded me of fall, my favorite season. Less that two months until October!

It is so beautiful here in Chicagoland, so we picked up niece up early and went to a new-to-us-park.

A few years ago, the kids and I did something that we called “50 Parks Summer.” During the summer, we went to 50 different parks. We wrote each one down in a notebook and marked which ones were our favorites so that we could go back. It took us the whole summer to go to 50 different parks, but we did it.

Maybe I should use the rest of this summer to do “50 Different Frozen Yogurt Flavors.” I think I could eat 50 flavors in 18 days :)

When I Don’t Workout, I Buy Food

Yesterday afternoon, I took the kids to the park.

I think it counts as exercise since it’s about a half hour walk to and from the park…especially when you go the long way which the kids didn’t appreciate since it was hot outside.

Today

I didn’t go to the gym this morning, so the kids and I went to Target…you know, the happiest place on Earth. I haven’t been to Target lately so I think I was starting to have Target withdraws.

I got Jacob a backpack for school, but I’m still waiting for the kid’s back-to-school supply lists to come in the mail. Obviously, it’s way too much effort for me to go to the school’s website and just print the lists out.

The first thing I saw when walked into Target was this awesome sweater (real or not real?)

Who doesn’t love a pink sweater with a hedgehog on it?! Sadly, the sweater didn’t come home with me.

I did get a few other things that I thought I’d share. Great, another food post. It seems like when I don’t workout out as often, I focus more on food.

First, I got my favorite fish – salmon belle mar. So. Good.

We’re going to Wisconsin Dells soon just like we did last year, so I got a couple of food items to bring with. I found this new Special K oatmeal. It’s a multi-grain blend with quinoa.

I got the maple brown sugar crunch flavor. There was also a few other flavors to chose from. These will be great to bring to the resort for breakfast – a lot healthier, easier, and faster than going out to breakfast. I also like these because they have less calories that the Quaker oatmeal cups.

One container of oatmeal has 190 calories, 8 grams of protein, and 5 grams of fiber.

Next, I got a Go Picnic hummus and crackers ready-to-eat-meal. These are great for the car or at the pool because they don’t have to refrigerated.

I also picked up a Lara ALT bar, which I ate as soon as we left the store. I was hungry.

I really like the ALT bars because they taste good and have a lot of protein, but I prefer the texture of the regular Larabars better. The ALT bars are a lot thicker and denser and not as soft.

Finally, I bought some flip flops for the Dells. A lot of the flip flops and sandals were on clearance for $4.48. Who doesn’t love $4.48 sandals?!

Danny and I have plans to go to the gym tonight after dinner. I’m either going to try out some of the weight machine or go to yoga, it depends how busy the gym. My gym is on the smaller side, so it gets really crowded at night – another reason I prefer going in the morning!
