Changing It Up

Good afternoon!

Yesterdays Workout

  • Indoor track – approx. 1 mile
  • Body Pump – 60 minutes

Yesterday morning, I woke up and headed to the gym. I started with a one mile run on the indoor track.

I am really starting to like the indoor track. I am not good at running outside in the cold (or the heat) so I stick to the treadmill during the winter months, but I like the indoor track a lot better than the treadmill and I can go a lot faster.

I actually made an effort to count my laps this time, and I ran ten laps which is slightly over a mile. I have never counted laps before so I often couldn’t remember if I was running my fourth lap or if I had just completed my fourth lap, etc. I finally figured out that I could use my watch to help me count laps.

I started my Polar watch right when I got on the track and it took me approximately one minute to complete one lap. So, if my watch said 7:30 (total time since I started the workout) I knew I was on lap seven.

After running on the track, I went to BodyPump. I was really dragging in BodyPump yesterday. Usually, if I don’t feel like working out in the morning, I go to the gym anyway and am totally fine once I’m there. But yesterday, I was just tired, run-down, hot, and sore. I still got through the class, but it was hard.

Yesterday afternoon, we went to my in-law’s house to do our final Christmas celebration with them.

Cousins:

It looks like my nephew has bows in his hair, but they’re actually reindeer antlers with bows on them.

I decided to wear my hair a little bit different yesterday.

My hair is one of my features that I am most self conscious about. I have extremely fine hair and I always have, and it’s blonde with doesn’t help with the fineness. It grows slow and it grows weird no matter how much  my stylist tries to fix it. One side is always longer and one side is a lot thinner. It’s naturally wavy, but not a nice way. A frizzy crazy wavy.

It doesn’t “do” anything. It rarely holds a curl and besides a ponytail and a straightener, I am not good at doing my hair. I wear it in a ponytail to the gym and for most of the day. When I do style it, I blow-dry and straighten it. That’s it.

Well, I decided to try and do something different with it for 2014, so I bought a curling wand, which is basically a tapered curling iron without the clip.

It was on sale for $25 at Ulta and comes with a heat proof glove since there’s no clip to hold your hair. I didn’t really have high hopes since my hair doesn’t normally like to curl, but I was pleasantly surprised with the results.

I haven’t curled my hair in years, so it wasn’t prefect and I could use some more practice but I was happy with how it came out.

The nice thing about curly hair is that it definitely makes my hair appear not so fine and flat. I have tried every volume shampoo, spray, cream, and mousse on the market and most of them just way down my hair.

And there’s my hair story :)

Today’s Workout

  • Approx. 3 miles – treadmill and indoor track

I went to the gym for a quick workout this morning. I ran three miles and then called it a day. I have felt so blah lately and I can’t wait for the new year to start!

Christmas and Today

It’s the day after Christmas!

Otherwise known as the day that Danny goes back to work and the kids want to open every single new present they got, playing with each one for three minutes before tossing it aside and opening a new one.

Also known as the day Danny goes back to work and Mom has to put together toys that she has no idea how to put together and gives up in frustration.

Also known as the day Danny goes back to work and Mom has to keep going to the store to buy batteries because the 40-pack of AA batteries that she bought isn’t enough.

Yeah, the day after Christmas is never fun.

I started this morning with a workout at the gym.

Today’s Workout

  • Trifecta Class – 60 minutes
  • Approx. 1 mile on indoor track

The gym was surprisingly crowded this morning. I guess everyone is trying to work off their holiday calories. I took the Trifecta class which was awesome and ended up burning a little more than 500 calories.

Then I walked/ran with Jacob on the indoor track for about a mile. I still can’t seem to count my laps without losing count so I figure it was about a mile. Total calories burned: 612. That probably covers the two pieces of cake that I ate last night :)

Yesterday

Yesterday morning, we woke up and had Christmas at home with the kids. Jaden got a furby which he was really excited about.

I have come to realize that maybe Santa made a mistake on that one because furby is majorly annoying. I keep trying to hide him under pillows and beds and stuff but Jaden must have a special connection with the furby because he keeps finding him.

Danny opening gifts:

I got an awesome Kate Spade “H” mug from my grandparent’s and Danny got me a cute coffee mug wearing a sweater.

I love my coffee mugs :)

Danny also got me a remote starter for my car. An awesome accessory for Chicago winters. He was very excited about it. I love it but I love my new purse more :)

After opening gifts, we went to my in-laws and visited with them for awhile. We went to my mom’s in the late afternoon for dinner. Unfortunately, I forgot my camera, so I didn’t get many pictures.

My brother and sister-in-law got me this awesome new water bottle.

Everyone had a great time being together and opening gifts. It was a wonderful Christmas.

Lunch

For lunch this afternoon, I had a egg sandwich on an English muffin with Muenster cheese and homemade strawberry jam that my aunt made.

The jam was amazing!!

Christmas Party, Cookies, and Core Workout

Good afternoon! It’s the day before Christmas Eve! Christmas seemed to come really fast this year but luckily, I finally got everything bought, wrapped, and baked!

Saturday evening, we went to a family Christmas party with my extended family that we only see every few years.

The kids were excited because Santa Claus was there! Well, my niece was a little nervous but at least she sat on his lap. When your two years old, Santa is a pretty scary guy.

Yesterday’s Workout

  • BodyPump – 60 minutes

Yesterday morning, Danny and I went to BodyPump, Jacob ran on the treadmill, and Jaden went to the kid’s room at the gym. After the gym, we came home and I started baking

I was glad that I made most of the cookie dough the day before, because it took a long time to bake all those cookies!

I made chocolate chip cookies, using this recipe.

I also made Butterscotch Reese’s Cookies.

And Peanut Butter Blossoms.

Then, I ate way too many cookies. I have been eating not so healthy lately and can’t wait to get back on track with eating better and tracking my food. I can tell by the way that my clothes are fitting that I need to cut out a few cookies!

Today’s Workout

  • Ab Circuit – Approx. 20 minutes
  • Walk/Run on Track – 30 minutes
  • Stretching/Foam Rolling – 10 minutes

This morning, I attempted to make snowman pancakes for the kids for breakfast.

Eh. They kind of resemble snowmen.

After breakfast, we headed to the gym. Jaden was very excited to bring the cookies we baked to the teachers in the kid’s room.

I started my workout with this ab circuit:

I did each exercise with no rest in between. I did the whole thing three times, resting 1-2 minutes in between. After the ab workout, Jacob and I walked and ran on the indoor track for 30 minutes.

I’m not sure how far we went because I can’t run and count laps. It’s just not happening. Nine laps equals a mile. I lost count after four laps. I focused on running for 30 minutes rather than on mileage.

After the track, I stretched and foam rolled for about 10 minutes. Jacob informed me that he hates stretching and went off to ride the stationary bike…after he picked up every weight on the weight rack and then set them back down.

This afternoon will just be spent getting last-minute things ready for Christmas Eve and Christmas!

Baking and Cooking

Thank you for all your kind words and nice thoughts on yesterday’s post. Crystal’s dad’s double lung transplant surgery went good and he is currently breathing with the new lungs. The doctors say that the road to recovery is a lot riskier than the surgery itself because there’s still a chance his body could reject the lungs. But so far, so good.

Yesterday’s Workout

  • BodyPump – 60 minutes

I went to BodyPump at the gym yesterday morning. I am still working on learning the new release. I have the moves down, now I am just working on the timing. The timing is always what I struggle with learning. I have come to realize that I am not a musically inclined person. I don’t hear or feel the beat and I count along with the beat to save my life. The instructor at my gym keeps telling me that it’ll get easier with time but I think she’s just saying that to make me feel better. :)

After the gym, I finally finished up the rest of my Christmas shopping. I bought myself a little treat to celebrate…or just because I really wanted to eat these chocolates.

They’re the Frango candy cane chocolates and they are amazing.

That box looks really big but there was really only four pieces in it.

Yesterday afternoon, Jaden had his holiday party at school and now the kids are off for two weeks!

Today’s Workout

  • A few strength exercises
  • 2.5 miles treadmill

I woke up at about 7 am this morning, so I decided to head to the gym. As I was trying to sneak out of the house, Jaden popped his head out of bed so I brought him to the kid’s room at the gym.

I started out doing a Nike Training Club workout, but my hip and glute really started bothering me.

I have been working out a lot more in the mornings lately and I was really sore last night. I decided that it would be best not to push it, so I hopped on the treadmill, ran one mile, and then walked the rest while chatting with a couple of girls at the gym.

After the gym, I took Jaden to get a much needed hair cut. I swear, my kids’ hair grows so fast!

After waiting forever to get a haircut, we made it home and I started making some cookie dough. I am making a whole bunch of dough so it can refrigerate overnight and be already to be baked tomorrow.

We have a family Christmas party tonight, so I am also making three pans of potatoes. I will be busy in the kitchen!

I wanted to share one of the cookie recipes I am making because they are so darn delicious!!

Reese’s Butterscotch Cookies    Adapted from: Sally’s Baking Addiction

Makes approx. 16 cookies

Ingredients:

  • 2 and 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup (1.5 sticks) butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg + 1 egg yolk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup butterscotch chips
  • 3/4 cup Reese’s Pieces

Directions:

  1. Mix flour, baking soda, and cornstarch in a large bowl. Set aside.
  2. In a separate bowl, use a hand mixer to mix softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until no lumps remain. Mix in the egg and combine. Then, mix in the egg yolk until combined. Finally, mix in the vanilla extract.
  3. Pour the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients a little at a time and mix until combined.
  4. Fold in the butterscotch chips and Reese’s pieces with a large spoon or spatula.
  5. Cover bowl and refrigerate for at least two hours and up to 3 days.
  6. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Take dough from fridge and let sit for 10 minutes to soften to room temperature. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll the dough into balls, about 3 tbsp. of dough per cookie. Optional: tip each cookie with more butterscotch chips and Reese’s Pieces.
  8. Bake at 350 degrees 11-12 minutes. Cookies may appear to be undercooked but do not overcook them. They will continue to cook on the baking sheet. Cool for 5-10 minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack.
  9. Enjoy!!

These cookies are delicious and I am excited to give them away as well as eat a couple  myself!

Things I’m Loving

Good afternoon!

One week until Christmas and three days until the kids are off of school for two weeks! Fun times.

Today, I thought I’d talk about a few things that I’m loving lately.

1. Cardio Fusion Class – 1/2 cardio dancing and 1/2 strength training. It’s the best of both worlds! I went to class this morning and I love that it’s a fun class but still a great workout.

2. Vienna Kosher Dill Chips – I love pickles. I love them. So good. I usually buy the Claussen dill sandwich slices, but I saw these Vienna pickles at the store and had to try them out. I bought the jar three days ago and they’re almost gone. Like I said, I love pickles.

3. Pop Chips – I also love chips. It seems like I love crunchy and salty snacks. I know that potato chips aren’t the best for me so I have been eating Pop Chips. I’m sure they’re not all that great for me either but at least they’re slightly better regular chips.

4. EOS lip balm – actually any lip balm or Chapstick in general. I think I have no less than five lip balms within five feet of me at all times. Danny says I have a problem. I disagree.

5. Nick, our elf – This morning Nick made snowmen out of donuts. He sure is a clever elf.

6. Baking – I usually prefer cooking to baking because baking requires exact measurements and I like to just throw ingredients together, but lately I have been loving trying out new cookie recipes. I plan on baking all my Christmas cookies these weekend, so I bought some cheap mixing bowls (I only have one big one) and some cookie boxes.

7. The Twilight Zone – this is totally random but the Twilight Zone is one of my favorite TV shows. The old black and white episodes, not the newer ones. They come on a lot during Halloween but the SyFy channel randomly plays them so my TV is set up to record them when they’re on. And then I watch them. Because I love them.

Weekend Fun…and More Cookies

Good morning! Happy Sunday!

I haven’t been around for a couple of days, so this post is going to contain a lot of randomness.

First up, Danny got a car!! It’s Chevy Equinox, and Danny is very happy with it. It’s the first SUV we’ve ever owned and I’m sure the space will come in handy.

Danny’s really good about keeping cars for a long time. I think he’s owned two cars in his life, whereas I’ve owned quite a few.

Friday.

On Friday morning, I taught BodyPump. I brought my new water bottle.

I saw this water bottle at Dick’s Sporting Goods a few weeks ago and fell in love with it. Hey, the paint splatter reminds me of the 80′s, and I love all things 80′s. But it was around $16 so I didn’t buy it.

I finally decided that I wanted it and went back to buy it. You can never have too many workout clothes or water bottles. Even though I think Danny disagrees with me on this – he’s always trying to throw my water bottles away.

When I went back to buy it, it was gone :( . I tried looking online for it with no success. Then, on Thursday night, I went to TJMaxx to buy something else, and there was my water bottle! And it was only $8! Awesome.

Friday’s BodyPump class went pretty well, and I worked for a little bit afterwards.

Tea

Although coffee is my #1 love, I have been loving tea lately. I found this super cute coffee mug at Michael’s for only $2.99 and I got some Celestial Seasonings Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride from Target to try out.

The tea really does taste like a sugar cookie! It’s really good but the peppermint flavor is still my favorite.

Saturday

Saturday morning, Jacob had an eye doctor appointment. Jacob was born 15 weeks early, weighing 1 lb. and 14 oz. He has had a few complications but nothing serious. As a baby, he had eye surgery to correct a condition called exotropia, which basically means that his left eye wants to turn outward rather than straight.

He had eye surgery as a baby to cut the muscle to force the eye to go straight. He wore an eye patch for extended periods during the day to help strengthen that eye. He has very little vision in that eye and the glasses help him to continue to use it.

There is always a possibility that his eye could go back outward again, so we see the eye doctor often for check-ups. It was a routine visit and the doctor said everything is looking good.

Saturday evening, we went with my family to an illumination show at a nearby arboretum.

All of the trees are lit up with different kinds of lights.

You can change some of the lights by waving your hand over a certain place and you could hug trees to change their lights.

It was really neat although it was freezing out and the kids were being a little overly energetic (read: crazy).

Afterwards, we had some hot chocolate…or three, before deciding to go to Red Robin for dinner. Two words – bottomless fries.

Cookies

I made another cookie recipe, oatmeal peanut butter chocolate chip.

I have been making so many cookies lately because I like to give them out during the holidays and I wanted to narrow it down to three delicious kinds of cookies. I think I am going to make chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter blossoms, and Reese’s butterscotch cookies.

The only problem with making so many cookies, is that I eat a lot of cookies. I usually send them to work with Danny, but it’s the weekend so they’ve just been sitting on the counter looking all delicious!

This morning, I am going to BodyPump at the gym. I am hoping that the instructor is doing the new release because I’m having a little bit of trouble with the timing and thought it would be helpful to do it while someone else was teaching.

Later this afternoon, we’re going to my best friend’s son’s birthday party.

Nike Training Club Workout

Good afternoon!

Yesterday’s Workout

  • Treadmill: walk/run – 10 minutes
  • Nike Training Club Workout – 30 minutes

Last night, I rushed to the gym as soon as Danny got home to take the 5:40 pm HIIT class. I got there at exactly 5:40 pm only to find out that the class was on Tuedays, not Mondays. I mixed up my days.

Since I didn’t have a class to go to, I wasn’t sure what to do. I ended up pulling out my phone and using the Nike Training Club app for a great workout.

I started with a 10 minute warm-up on the treadmill and then I completed the following workout (I did change an exercise or two a little bit):

*Each exercise is done for a minute and with weights of your choice.

  • Straight leg kicks
  • Hopping side to side
  • Jogging in place
  • Sumo squat with press
  • Alternating medicine ball push-ups
  • Deadlift
  • Burpee to shoulder press
  • Side plank
  • Plank row
  • Russian twists
  • Modified push-ups
  • Side lunge with rotation
  • Deadlift with alternating row
  • Opposite arm/leg supermans
  • Sumo squat with press
  • Hip bridges with chest press
  • Deadlift
  • Burpee to shoulder press
  • Side plank
  • Plank row
  • Wide leg deadlifts
  • Russian twists
  • Side lunge with rotation
  • Deadlift with alternating rows
  • sumo squat with press
  • Hip bridges with chest press
  • Opposite arm/leg supermans

It was definitely a great workout with no recovery time in between so I worked up quite a sweat!

Tea

Yesterday afternoon, I drank the candy cane lane green tea and it was a lot better than I expected. I felt very festive drinking my peppermint tea out of a cute gingerbread mug.

Isn’t it nice how something as simple as a gingerbread mug can make a person happy.

Today’s Workout

  • Butts and Guts Class – 60 minutes

I worked out at the gym again this morning (my hip is sore!) I took the Butts and Guts class and it was awesome. I was supposed to work at the gym after my workout but plans got changed. I have been missing all my morning workouts, so it was nice to get back to the gym this morning.

This afternoon, I am going to practice BodyPump a little bit and then spend some time wrapping presents.

I still have quite a few Christmas presents to buy and tons to wrap!!

Happy Friday! I am so glad that it’s finally the weekend!

Tomorrow, we’re going with my family to cut down a Christmas tree.

The weather was pretty nice last year but tomorrow, it’s supposed to be really cold out and I know Jaden will spend most of his time complaining about how cold he is, so I picked up a few hand warmers from the dollar section at Target for the kids.

Last year:

I love big fat Christmas trees and I usually think the one that we pick will fit in our house but then it ends up taking up half of the living room.

So big and fluffly puffy. I love it.

Sunday, we’re going to the fire department that my brother-in-law works at because they have a fun breakfast with Santa for the kids.

Today

I worked this morning, then I went to Target to pick up a few things. I needed medium sized gift bags and gift tags. Normally, I’m good about buying gift bags after Christmas to save for the following year, but I guess I didn’t buy any last year. So, I went to Target and stocked up.

Do you see those Hershey’s peppermint bark candies in that picture? The best candy I’ve ever tasted. I bought them the other day to add to some presents and I think the kids and I ended up eating more than we gave away…which lead me to have to buy another bag. So good.

After I got home from the store, I practiced the new BodyPump release. I am teaching BodyPump next Friday, so I am trying to learn the new one by then to teach.

Core and Kettlebell Workout

Hey guys! How is your Thursday going?! I’m so glad that tomorrow is Friday. I feel like I have been so busy this week!

Yesterday’s Workout

  • Ab workout
  • Kettlebell Workout

I worked for a couple of hours yesterday morning and then watched my niece, so Danny and I went to the gym last night and worked out together.

Once in a while, we’ll actually do the same workout together and that’s what we did last night. We started with this ab workout:

Then, we did a kettlebell workout. Some of the kettlebell moves included:

  • Kettlebell Press-ups
  • Kettlebell squat to kick with a shoulder press
  • Kettlebell lunge (passing KB through legs)
  • Squat, burpee, to upright row with the kettlebell
  • Hip bridge chest press with kettlebell
  • Kettlebell swing (my fav!)
  • Kettlebell swing around the body

It was a great workout and something different because I don’t normally use the kettlebell.

Today

I watched my niece early this morning, so I spent a little time before she came over learning the new BodyPump release.

Just when I get the old one figured out, there’s a new one! And I don’t learn these easily, I have to do it over and over and over just to pick it up. Hopefully, it’ll get easier with time.

After my niece got here, we went out and did a few errands. I got a few things for Christmas and some stuff for some more projects I’m working on.

Lunch

By the time lunch rolled around, I was pretty hungry. I was actually really excited to eat a bagelwich since I haven’t had one in so long because of the Grain Brain Challenge. And I had sweet potato fries…and apple slices.

I feel like I have been so busy and haven’t been around much lately!

Yesterday’s Workout

  • Cardio Fit & Tone Class – 60 minutes

I have been working a lot in the mornings lately, so I haven’t been able to keep up with my normal workouts. To get a workout in, I went to the gym last night and took a cardio fit & tone class.

The class was mostly cardio with a few strength training moves, and then ended with some core work.

Whenever I work out at night, it makes me so hungry! The class started at 6:25 pm so I didn’t want to eat dinner before I went, and by the time I got home at 7:45 pm, I was starving!

I work again this morning, so I might go to the gym again tonight. I am still sore from Sunday’s BodyPump and yesterday’s class, so we’ll see how I feel later.

Besides working, I have been trying to get some Christmas shopping done. I feel like the holidays are sneaking up on me this year and it’s going to be a rush to get everything done!

Danny spent the day after Thanksgiving putting up our outdoor Christmas decorations.

We delivered letters to Santa’s mailbox.

Elf on the Shelf made an appearance.

Jaden has been so excited to wake up every morning and find the elf.
