Bud’s Run 5k 2013

Good afternoon! This morning, Danny, the kids, and I ran the Bud’s Run 5k (the kids ran the 1k).


My dad came out to watch the kids. Thanks, Dad.

I didn’t have to be worried about the heat and humidity after all because it rained the whole entire race. Not that I minded. I much rather run in the rain than the heat. I don’t mind the rain.

I was hoping to have a good run since it wasn’t too hot out. As soon as I started running, I could feel how tight my calves were and knew it was going to be a problem. And my right quad continues to hurt. I started out a little too fast as usual and my time was 32:11.

I am going to be honest and say that I was very disappointed. I was hoping to run a little better especially without the heat and humidity. My dad pointed out that if I had ran 32:11 a year ago, I would have been so happy.

Yes, he’s right. My running has improved a lot since last year. I have cut 4-5 minutes off of my 5k time, but it’s still disappointing.

It’s disappointing because I have been running for years, and I still struggle with it. Every single run for me is a hard run. I really feel like I give it everything I have most of the time. Yes, sometimes maybe my mind gives up before my legs do, but running is hard for me especially when my legs are sore most of the time.

No matter how hard I try or how much I run, I am just mediocre. I feel like I should be able to go a little faster but I just can’t. I’m not saying that I want to be incredibly fast or win medal every time. I simply want to be able to finish a 5k in 30 minutes or under on a consistent basis.

I am not looking for sympathy and I know that I should tell myself things like all that matters is that you did it and at least you’re out there being active or well, you’re lapping everyone one the couch.

But you know what? I don’t want to say those things to myself. I want to feel bad for awhile and be upset. Then, I will get over it, move on, and run my next race.

It’s just discouraging to try so hard and fall short. But I’ll get over it. Sometimes it just helps to talk about how I feel.

Moving on so that you don’t have to deal with anymore of my self pity…

Danny did awesome once again!! Not only did he PR with a time of 22:51, but he won first place for his age group!

I am so proud of him. He was been really trying hard to win a first place for his age group and today he did it! Not to mention a time of 22:51! Great job, Danny.

Along with his medal, he got a pair of running socks.

It amazes me how some people just have such a natural running ability. Danny can just wake up and run a 5k as fast as he can or go out and run 10 miles no problem. Very awesome.

The kids had fun running the 1k. Jacob ran really fast, finishing 14th out of all the kids.


Jaden ran great too and even lost his shoes halfway through the race. He just sat down in the middle of the runners to put it back on. I had to go run and grab him before he started a big pile-up of people tripping over him.

Jaden was so excited to eat his Italian ice after the race.

There was a lot of food after the race - bananas, orange, watermelon, Clif Builder bars, Italian ice, and pizza.

Yes, there was pizza and breadsticks after the race. I thought that was a nice touch.

Overall, I think the race went well. It’s a smaller race but this year was the 10th anniversary of the race. I have ran the course quite a few times because it’s where a lot of the local races are held.

There’s enough people directing you were to go, one water station, and someone yelling out splits and miles 1 and 2. There is enough bathrooms, the race starts on time, and there’s plenty of post-race refreshments.

This year you could buy $1 raffle tickets to win different gift baskets.

The only thing I didn’t like was the awards. I felt like they took way too long. First, the announced the 12 and under winners. Then they announced the 13 year old male winners. Then the 13 year old female winners. Then the 14 year old male winners. Then the 14 year old female winners. And so on and so on. All the way until age 19 when it finally went into 5 year age divisions.

I have never been to a race with single age group awards. Also, during the awards they started calling out raffle winners. Then they went back to the age group winners. Then in the middle of the age group winners they started calling out the 1k kid’s winners so that the parents with kids could leave. Then they went back to the age group winners.

It just took way to much time. And I don’t remember them doing it like that last year.

After the race, we stopped at Starbucks for coffee and a breakfast sandwich. Well, I had a breakfast sandwich. I think Danny filled up on pizza!

Tonight, we’re going to my mom’s to celebrate her birthday which in Monday. We’ll also be watching the Blackhawks game over there. Go Hawks!

  1. I totally get what you are saying about wanting to be faster … I struggle with that a lot because I will feel like crud while running, but I’ll see someone else pulling out times much better than mine.

    I would love to run a sub 35 minute 5k you did great. You have to remember not all runs are good runs, that why you remember the good ones.

      You are totally right! And I give you a lot of credit. You do it all – work full-time, take care of V, and still find time to run! That’s awesome!

  5. Congrats to everyone on another successful race day! And I totally know what you mean about needing to complain and vent. Sometimes that’s exactly what I need to do in order to move on!

  6. Best advice I can give about that 30 minute wall… Other than the automatic, run more, is there are lot of plateaus in every ones training where we feel like we cap out, but need a new approach. Be it miles per week, type of runs, or simply finding where you are leaving too much on the table in your training. Don’t let it discourage you. It takes time. You are doing great and your hubster is fast!!

      Thanks – I think I’m going to try running a little faster during my weekly runs and see if that helps. My half marathon has tempo runs and speed work and hills so hopefully that will help too!

  7. Have you thought about looking into a getting a running coach, maybe even for just a short time? I am just like you, running for years and I am thrilled to run under a 10 minute mile. I think as long as you don’t compare yourself to other runners, it’s okay to be disappointed in a “bad” race. All you can do is continue to try and do your best!!

      I have thought about a running coach for short term but I’m not really sure how to find a local one. Maybe I should check with the local running stores.

  8. It is sweet that you live somewhere that has a lot of races! I haven’t done a race for 5 years now…now that I started running again I am hoping to sign up for a race soon.

    How many years have you been running? I look forward to running a 30 min 5k someday…for now I am just happy I can run for 30 minutes straight :)

      I’ve been running since about 2009. That was when I ran my first race – The Muddy Buddy! Good luck with your running!

    I TOTALLY GET IT!!! I too have written about this. I just think I am not a “natural” runner and I think I just have one pace. I am slowly coming to terms with it:) Besides the fact that I am 46 years old! lol YOU ROCK.
