Take That, Weekend!

It’s Monday – which means that Danny and I stuck with healthy eating (with treats in moderation!) all weekend! I haven’t stuck to my calorie count on a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in a looonngg time, so I’m pretty proud of us.

I really hesitate to say that I stuck to my “diet” because I don’t look at it as a diet. A diet, to me, is something that sounds negative and means restricting yourself. A diet is something that can’t be maintained over long periods of time without feeling restricted.

I prefer to say “healthy eating” which to me means sticking to my calorie count by getting in enough fruits, veggies, dairy, lean proteins, and whole grains. But it also means, treats in moderation. I think when I deprive myself, I just crave it more. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with an occasioanal treat – as long as I don’t go overboard.

Last night, I was craving Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food (which we have in the freezer), but I had already had two Tootsie pops as my treat, so I know it wouldn’t have been the best choice to make. So, yes, I denied myself the ice cream but only because I had already had a treat. And once I got back to reading my book, I forgot all about the ice cream. I’m not saying to always deny yourself, but sometimes distracting yourself works.

I stuck to a calorie count of 1450-1650 all weekend. 1650 is a bit on the high side for me, but according to my BodyMedia Fit, I still burned more calories than I consumed, and I worked out this weekend.

Breakfast

This morning, I had Kashi oatmeal topped with one teaspoon of peanut butter.

I also tried out the Special K protein drink mix, and I really like them. It’s a nice change from water, and only has 30 calories and 5 grams of protein.

Today’s Workout

  • 1.63 miles treadmill
  • BodyPump – 60 minutes
  • 1.37 miles treadmill

I went to the fitness center and ran on the treadmill before and after BodyPump today for a total of 3 miles. I am also happy to announce that Danny and I won our first week of the Fantasy Fitness League! Each team that won received one point. So, although other teams also won a point, we beat the team that we were up against this week.

Danny and I worked out a combined total of 20 times this week. Another team worked out a total of 26 times! If they keep that up it means that the week Danny and I are against them, we have to beat them! That’ll be the week to up our workouts. Hope your ready Danny… :)

After the gym, I dropped off some clothes for a friend of a friend. I cleaned out my closet and dresser about a week ago, and had tons of clothes to get rid of. I hold onto things forever even if I haven’t worn them in years. I finally decided to keep only what I truly wear, and had four bags of clothes to give away.

I couldn’t part with any of my race shirts though. I gave them their own drawer.

004

I honestly never wear any of them. Ever. But I feel like they all have memories attached to them so I can’t get rid of them.

After dropping the clothes off, I stopped at Mariano’s and made a salad for lunch.

020

Along with my salad, I made a stuffed pepper with brown rice, spinach, and feta cheese.

023

A perfect lunch.

024

I have plans to make spaghetti squash with roasted broccoli and marinara sauce for dinner. I know that I can’t get Danny to convert from normal spaghetti to spaghetti squash, but I do know that he’ll be willing to eat a smaller portion and add more veggies. It’s all about making healthy substitutions and taking it one day at a time!

  • What does “healthy eating” mean to you?
  • Which would you rather give up: pasta or chocolate?
  • What healthy subsitutions do you make?
  • What do you do with all your race t-shirts?

  1. My new favorite food substitution is replacing white or wheat flour with new things like almond or coconut flower, or even cauliflower. Sounds crazy but it has been a real treat a lot healthier too! – Alison @ health-assets.com

  2. I keep most of my race t-shirts. Especially now that races are going to the dry-fit fabrics. Healthy eating to me means moderation. I would never deny myself a piece of fruit. I would rather give up pasta I think. We don’t have it that often.

  3. I’m totally a fan of distracting myself when I want to eat every sweet treat in sight. It’s a challenge but it’s definitely better with distractions!

  4. I use all of my race t-shirts as pajama tops. Cause I am sexy like that…in my sweats and t-shirts that I wear to bed ;-) .

Lately I have been helping myself to a cup of Candy Cane Lane green tea in the evenings when my sugar cravings strike. I have got to cut out the after dinner snacking and this seems to help a lot.

  5. My race shirts have their own section in my closet so I think it’s funny your shirts have their own drawer. I do wear my shirts, though. I sleep in the cotton ones and wear the tech shirts to run in!

  6. Have you looked at making the cotton shirts in to a quilt. That way they are at least usable. And no, I haven’t done it either. I have an entire storage bin just waiting in the attic of college shirts that I want to do the same thing with. One of these days …

  7. I think of my diet as a lifestyle. It’s not something I will do every once and awhile just to lose weight or whatever.

Way to go on your team vs team 1st victory!!! Sounds like you have your work cut out for you when you facr 26…good luck. I know you guys can do it, your drive is incredible. keep up the great work…I love reading about it.

  9. Brilliant post! I totally agree with you; I hate calling my new healthy lifestyle a “diet”, because that just sounds so negative and joyless! To me, eating healthy is all about balance. I want to keep up this healthy lifestyle for the rest of my life, so having the occasional treat here and there isn’t going to throw me off course! Congratulations on your fantasy fit win, I bet you were super happy!

  10. Congratulations on sticking w/ your calorie intake all weekend! You go girl!!!

I’d definitely give up pasta before chocolate :)

  11. Yeah I don’t think the word diet is good either, healthy living and healthy lifestyle is much better! Good luck with it! I really like your blog! I’m glad that I found it! It would be nice if you could stop by my blog sometime too (I’m from England) as I post my outfits, personal style, likes and much more :) :)

  12. Oh gosh Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food was and still is my favorite flavor – I would always ask my mom for some after school haha.
    Awesome workout girl!
