Sunrise Shuffle 5k

I’ve been sick the past few days, but I woke up this morning feeling a lot better, so I wasn’t too worried about running the 5k. I didn’t eat anything beforehand though, just because I was afraid of how my stomach would act.

The Sunrise 5k started at 9 am and was literally 5 minutes from our house. We left about 8:15 am and got there early. My sister-in-law showed up at about 8:30 am to register for the race.

Of course, Danny and the kids came out to support me. My dad, brother, and niece also came.

Just us three girls ran the race this morning – me, Crystal, and my stepmom – Sue.

The race was sponsored by Sunrise Chevrolet so they had the giant sun mascot walking around.

This is only the second annual Sunrise 5k , so it was fairly small – about 130 runners. But for a small race, it was well-organized and included a lot of extras. The only problem was that we had to go into the mall and walk a bit to use the bathrooms. But I actually didn’t mind at all because real bathrooms are way better than porta potties.

Thankfully, the weather ended up being nice and sunny. It was probably about 50 degrees this morning. A little cool, but I warmed up so fast when I started running, so I was glad that I only ran in a t-shirt.

The race started at exactly 9 am and we were off! The course was actually the parking lot around the mall which we ran two times. Pretty flat and simple. There were lots of volunteers, police blocking off traffic, and a water station. I just went out and ran my best.

My time ended up being 31:49 which I was very happy with. My best time ever is 31:20, so this time was fine with me.

Worst running picture of me ever:

Crystal did awesome and ended up running her best time ever! Great job, Crystal. You’re

After the race, they did the awards ceremony – and GUESS WHAT YOU GUYS?!!!

I WON A MEDAL!! Not only did I win a medal, but I won a SECOND place medal for my age group!!

I was so excited! I was actually shocked that I won, but so happy. I have never won a medal before, and I kept telling everyone as I walked up to get it that oh my gosh this is my first medal! People might have thought I was a little bit crazy.  I was just so happy!

My stepmom also killed it – getting first place in her age group!!

This 5k is the first 5k that she had ever run the year before, and she shaved nearly four and a half minutes off last year’s time!

After the awards ceremony, they had a buffet for the runners and a raffle. For such a small race, they went above and beyond.

I actually won a free oil change in the raffle, which kind of worked out good because my car has been beeping at me that it needs an oil change for the last two weeks. My stepmom also won an oil change. Yay for oil changes!

I ate a little bit of fruit from the buffet (I also had a bagel after the race) but what I really wanted was coffee, so we stopped at Dunkin’ Donuts, and I got a white chocolate pumpkin coffee…and a jelly donut. Hey, I deserve it, right?!

It was a really good morning, and later today we’re meeting up with my family to take some fall picture of the kids in the leaves. I hope you all have a wonderful Sunday!

Awesome job on the race today!!! I once one a medal (also 2nd place in my age group) and it was for a Turkey trot that I finished in 28 minutes. I never did actually go pick up the medal and I so regret it because I don’t even come close to running that fast anymore!

  8. Congratulations! I am happy to hear you are feeling better.

  9. Congratulations to both you & your step momma. You most certainly deserved that jelly doughnut. I love how the race seems small, yet so well organized!
