Grocery Shopping Trip

Yesterday afternoon, we went to my brother and sister-in-law’s house for a cookout. My brother and sister-in-law made a bunch of delicious food. Crystal was even nice enough to make tilapia for me.

And of course there was dessert involved.

While we were there we discussed something very important in my family – Halloween.

My dad loves Halloween and puts together a Halloween calendar every year with stuff planned for every weekend in October.

Last year he created a really elaborate “Halloween in Wonderland” game/adventure that took us a month to complete. October is always a fun and busy month for us. And crazy, definitely crazy.

This October is going to be just as fun. Crystal has an Amazing Race style Halloween game planned for us that I’m really looking forward to.

Today’s Workout

  • 1 mile – treadmill
  • Butts and Guts – 60 minutes

I’ve been getting to the gym a few minutes early after Jaden goes to school, and I have been using that time to try to improve my mile time. That’s why I only run one mile.

Look, I took a picture with my smart phone during Butts and Guts class and uploaded it to the computer and onto my blog all by myself:

Trust me – that’s an accomplishment.

Grocery Shopping

After the gym, I stopped by the grocery store to pick up some stuff for the kid’s lunches and dinner throughout the week. I don’t know if anyone is actually interested in seeing what I bought, but I feel like I am always curious to see what kinds of foods other people are buying, so I thought I’d share a few things.

I have been trying to eat most of my carbs during the day and eat a meal lighter in carbs for dinner. I am also really trying to cut back on sugar for these next 11 days before my final Biggest Loser weigh-in, also just because less refined sugar is healthier.

I bought lettuce and smoked salmon for salads:

Plain Greek yogurt with blueberries to mix in:

Spaghetti squash and sauce:

Buy one, get one free hummus. You can’t pass up a deal like that!

Eggs – always eggs!

And sugar-free caramel apple Werther’s Originals for a little treat:

I don’t mind doing the actual grocery shopping itself, but I hate bringing the groceries inside and putting them away. I don’t know why, it just isn’t fun. And I am one of those people who will fall down the stairs because I am trying to carry 15 grocery bags at once. And then the bread gets squished. And the eggs break. Dumb groceries.

Questions of the day:

  • What’s your favorite holiday?
  • What kinds of things do you buy when you go grocery shopping? Do you like grocery shopping?
  • Did you workout today?

  1. I only really like grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s. It’s more fun there, things are cheap and there’s always something new. Whole Foods is ok, but everything is so expensive! It’s more of a treat to shop there. Normal weekly grocery shopping is a pain and annoying. I never know what I’ll feel like eating during the week- especially for dinners, so I’m always going back. And the whole carrying in, putting away part is not fun for me either!

    • I agree – I am always go back too, like 4 times a week! 🙂 I wish I had a TJ’s closer to me! We have a Whole Foods about 20 minutes away – but you’re right, they are so expensive!

  2. Funny–Halloween might be my least favorite holiday. I’m not a fan of having to figure out costumes. I’m just not that creative. My favorite holiday: Thanksgiving!!! Can’t wait. 🙂

And grocery shopping . . . I love it! I wish I didn’t have to go to so many different places to get what I want, but as long as I’m not too stressed, I enjoy the time to peruse what’s available and think of meal ideas.

You gave me a meal idea! Spaghetti squash and sauce. Do you like it? I’ve heard of it before, but haven’t tried it.
I am back on my low carb, no sugar diet after trying to loose weight through calorie restriction and exercise. I did it for 3 years and then gave up for a year. I can definitely see the effects of eating carbs and sugar on my body so I’m ready to quit for good.

    • I love spaghetti squash and sauce – I also throw in some roasted broccoli and parmesan cheese. So good! Do you cut carbs completely? I feel like my body needs carbs for energy during the day but I try to eat less carbs at night.

I eat only 20-25 carbs today and that is mainly veggies. Once I loose the weight then I will slowly add more carbs. It’s easy to incorporate things like low carb bread and tortillas, and even ice cream, and noodles. Last time I just went crazy with the “bread” products and stopped working out and slowly gained the weight back. Our gym that we belonged to, got new owners and stopped providing childcare, turned into more of a meat head place then somewhere fun to workout.

  4. I don’t mind grocery shopping since I can go during week when no one is there-I hate the long lines on weekends! I love Halloween and seeing all the kids dressed up etc. and thanksgiving is great since I spend it with my family and my best friend and get family every year. We cook together( one of our fav things to do) and be with our families. What could be better?!

  5. Amy

On my last shopping trip I brought steak and food for the week.

  6. I really enjoy Halloween because it is fun to watch my kids dressed up and so excited about it. We have been debating costume ideas for a month now.

As far as grocery shopping, it isn’t something that I love. But more than that, I am like you…I hate putting groceries away. Bleh! Not quite as much as I dislike folding and putting away laundry…now that is the worst!!

  7. I love the produce! I’d say most of my cart is filled with it! My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. Lots of good food and time with family! No pressure to find the perfect gift either, but I do love black Friday shopping the day after T-giving!

  8. Haha I actually love grocery shopping 🙂

  9. Love grocery shopping! Can’t ever complain about it, except I always WANT to go to TJ’s, but it’s so darn crowded, and right next to an Old Navy that tempts me deadly….
Halloween in our neighborhood is kind of sad b/c most people are spread out/no kids and no streetlights. So we will hopefully go to our 3 y.o.’s BF’s street this year and look forward to lots of kids!

  10. Love grocery shopping. With a fridge being empty right now, I just wrote on my post today how i’m beyond excited to get back home just so I can stock it up again, haha! Don’t feel weird about showing your food though, I actually enjoy hearing what others buy. Werthers may be the perfect sweet treat too btw!!

  11. I actually drove 20 miles to the closest Marianos on Monday. It is in Arlington Heights, I am not sure how close you are to there, but you should check it out. It is like a Whole Foods and a regular grocery store all in one. I think there is one in Hoffman Estates too, if that is closer to you.
