Busiest Months of the Year and The Help Review

The Help

Last night, I finished reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I know that I am a bit late on reading this, and there’s already been a movie based on the book, but I honestly didn’t plan on reading it. My mom just read it, and gave it to me to read, so I figured, why not? I am so glad that I read it because it’s one of the best books that I’ve read in a while.

The Help takes places in 1962 in Jackson, Mississippi, and is told from the point of view of three people. Aibileen - a quiet black maid who recently lost her only son. Minny - an outspoken black maid who can’t seem to hold down a maid position and has a hot-tempered drunk husband. And Skeeter – a white women who just finished college and aspires to be a writer.

After looking more closely at the black maids at her friends homes and her own, Skeeter decides to secretly write a book about what the maids go through on a daily basis and how life is for them in Mississippi in 1962. She must enlist the help of several maids, which is a hard task because sharing their secrets could get them in the worst kind of trouble.

I loved how The Help was written from the view-point of these three women. Kathryn Stockett writes as if she’s actually each character, and you can’t help feeling attached to them as you get sucked into their story. The book was great all around. It will make you laugh, cry, and shudder as you imagine what these women went through.

I can’t believe today is the last day of April! The year is flying by so fast. May and June are the busiest months of the year for us.

May

  • Jacob’s birthday
  • Mother’s Day
  • My birthday
  • My stepbrother’s birthday
  • My father in law’s birthday
  • My mother in law’s birthday

June

  • Danny’s birthday
  • Father’s Day
  • My brother’s birthday
  • My mom’s birthday
  • My sister in law’s baby shower

May and June are crazy birthday months for us, plus Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. It’s funny because my birthday is always right after Mother’s Day, and Danny’s birthday is right after Father’s Day. It’s going to be a busy next couple of months!

Breakfast

This morning, I toasted a sandwich thin and added some peanut butter and pear slices. I tried to sprinkle on just a little bit of cinnamon, but it always comes out too fast, and I end up with a lot of cinnamon.

Today’s Workout

  • BodyPump
  • 24 minutes treadmill

Going on the treadmill right after BodyPump wasn’t the best idea. Right away my calves muscles felt like they were going to burst out of my legs. I only made it 24 minutes before I had to stop. Blah.

After my workout, I drank one of the 35 gram protein shakes that I bought at Trader Joe’s yesterday.

It actually tasted a lot better than I expected it too.

I also stopped at the store to pick up some Oreo cupcakes for Jacob’s birthday on Thursday.

I purposely bought a three pack of cupcakes for Danny, Jacob, and Jaden. My weigh-in day happens to fall on the same day as Jacob’s birthday, so I won’t be having a cupcake. Sad, I know. But he’s having his birthday party this weekend, and Marlene is making the cake, so I plan on having a slice of that. Yum, cake.

Questions of the day:

  • Have you read The Help? Thoughts?
  • Did you work out today?
  • What’s your favorite kind of cake?
  • Which months are the busiest for you?

  1. I’ve read The Help and loved it! I am still refusing to watch the movie because I feel like it will ruin the book for me! Most movies do that… maybe in a few years I’ll give in.

I loved the help such a great story and movie! A must see after reading the book ! I love red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting . Every month is a busy one with three kids! I just roll with it and enjoy the ride. Hoping to get a walk in today if the weather cooperates!

  3. I adored The Help! I’m sad you can’t have a cupcake. :( My busiest months are definitely May/June/September, as I am a primary school teacher.

  4. Even though my nearest Trader Joe’s is on another continent, I am curious about the protein shake you had. Is it dairy based?

And I’m with you on the craziness of May and June. I fell like I just finished grading midterms, and now I’m writing the final. I’m also super sad that this school year is ending because I absolutely love my students. Time needs to slow down!

    • I love the strawberry smoothie you made! I haven’t been able to find good strawberries here yet.

I think the protein drink is dairy based. It has milk protein concentrate and calcium caseinate. But they’re not refrigerated at the store.

The Help- Being a woman is hard enough but being a black woman is double the struggle for sure. I think authors are amazing to give those women a voice. I am so glad you liked it.
