Running Outside

It is a beautiful Sunday here in Chicagoland. The weather is perfect and gorgeous. I can’t wait for spring to get here!

The day started out right with some whole wheat chocolate chip pancakes.

I made Jaden’s pancake in the shape of a “j”. I think he ate four bites of it before declaring that it wasn’t a real “j” because it wasn’t crossed at the top. Geesh, all that hard “j” making work for nothing.

Today the kids went to Chuck E. Cheese with Grandma, so Danny and I decided that it was the perfect day to run outside. I haven’t run outside in months! The weather was so beautiful, there was no way I couldn’t run outside. Before we left, I used the calf stretcher, foam roller, rolled my foot over a golf ball, and used the balance board.

Danny and I went to the outdoor circular trail that I usually run on during the spring and summer. I was able to jog/run about two miles without stopping, except to run to my car really quick to grab my water cup. I walked the last mile, completing a little over 3 miles.

The water fountains weren’t on yet, and I am the kind of person that needs water when I run. Since they weren’t on, I grabbed my hot pink to-go water cup from the car and left it behind a lamp-post, so I could grab a quick drink on my next lap. I finished up my second mile, dying for water, and as I approached the spot where I left my cup, I can see that it’s gone!

I thought that Danny maybe grabbed it, but when he lapped me (he’s fast), he didn’t have it. Then I was pissed that someone stole my water cup. It turns out that we saw some lady with it, and told her that it was my cup. I think that maybe she grabbed it, thinking that it was garbage, and didn’t want to leave it just sitting there. But really, who does that?! It’s a hard plastic, hot pink cup. It’s not like it’s some paper cup from a drive-thru. And she poured all my water out! Grr…At least I got my cup back.

After two miles, my calves were so tight and my Achilles tendons (I think) were killing me. I guess all that stretching and foam rolling didn’t help as much as I thought. That’s why I ended up walking the last mile.

After running, we went inside the building that’s there, and I saw this little set-up for the Dine and Dash 5k relay race!

I love that they have fake plastic food out. I’m pretty sure that the stuff that was supposed to be ice cream was actually cauliflower.

I am getting pretty excited for this race. I don’t think I will be able to run it very fast at all because of my calves, but I think it’ll be a lot of fun.

After picking up the kids from the second best place on earth, we went to Portillo’s for some post-run food. I had a garden salad with their house dressing, which is the best dressing I have ever had.

And we also shared a cheese fry. You can’t go to Portillo’s and not get fries. I’m pretty sure that it’s a law.

Well, I’m off to enjoy some more of this beautiful weather!

Questions of the day:

  • Did you do anything outside today?
  • Do you like french fries? I love them. I tried to give them up once, but it didn’t work. At all.
  •  Do you like running outside or on a treadmill?

Maybe you should see a sports doctor?? It’s been too long with your calves hurting.

  2. Loved the “J” pancake and that you have a balance board

Dr. Ducat who is in Bloomingdales can help you. She does sport medicine & other things. She taught my class in the summer. Both my friend & her son have seen her.

  4. I have heard their house salad is amazing. I have not been to one yet. I am not so sure I would get a salad.

  5. Thanks for showing a picture of the calf stretcher. Never heard of such a thing! And yes, it IS required to get the cheese fries at Portillos. *DUH! I walked 4 miles around Lake Arlington. My first walk of the season. So happy spring SEEMS to be here! So glad you got to enjoy the outdoors.

  6. The weather in Chicago has been gorgeous! Oh and Portillo’s, soooo good!!
